City historian to give free presentation on the history of Batavia - warts and all - at St. James Parish Hall

Larry Barnes, City of Batavia historian, will be giving a talk entitled "History of Batavia – The Good, Bad, and Ugly" beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20 at St. James Episcopal Church Parish Hall.

This is a free event and there will be refreshments. The church is located at 405 E. Main St. in the City of Batavia.

Vibrant Batavia's third 'Coffee Talk' - Central Park District & Downtown

Vibrant Batavia and NeighborWorks have scheduled five “Coffee Talks” throughout the City so that residents may open dialogue with City leadership about neighborhood issues and opportunities. The forum also sets the stage to introduce Leanna Di Risio as its Batavia dedicated Community Organizer.

Big fundraiser for Sunshine Nursery School in memory of Azriel Butler

A fundraiser in memory of Azriel Butler will be held on Saturday, Oct. 19 at the Le Roy American Legion Hall, located at 53 W. Main Street in the village. All proceeds will be donated to the Sunshine Christian Nursery School in Le Roy.

The event includes a 5K run/walk, live bands -- Audibull and Monkey in a Bottle, Chinese auctions, 50/50s, a bounce house, face painting, snow cones, cotton candy, popcorn, kids activities, and BBQ chicken.

GC Libertarian Party hosts meet-and-greet on Ross Street for its candidates

The GCLP Liberty Tent will be open to the public from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013 at 167 Ross St. in Batavia. All City of Batavia residents, especially those in Ward 2, are invited to meet City Council candidates Jim Rosenbeck and Lisa Whitehead and County Legislator candidate Robert Brown. Jim, Lisa, Bob, and Genesee County Libertarian Party members want to hear what's on the minds of the citizens in Batavia!

Chamber hosts meet-and-greet for its new president Tom Turnbull

The public is invited to meet Tom Turnbull, the new president of the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber will host a meet-end-greet from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 7, at Terry Hills Restaurant and Banquet Facility, located at 5122 Clinton Street, Batavia.

Meet Tom and enjoy a casual happy-hour atmosphere. Hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar will be provided

Fourth Annual Barn Dance at Torrey's to benefit Elba Historical Society

The Fourth Annual Barn Dance to benefit the Elba Historical Society will begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 12 at Torrey's Barn. It is located on Route 98 in Elba.

The local country band M.A.C. will start things off and then Kelly's Oldtimers will play for your listening enjoyment and to accompany round and square dancing.

Adults $6, ages 18 and under $3.

There will be hay bales to sit on or you're welcome to bring your own chairs.

Delicious refreshments will be available and the coffee is free.

There will be door prizes, 50/50s, and a lottery basket!

Assemblyman Hawley's staff holds office hours at GCC

Due to his sixth annual Patriot Trip to Washington D.C. for local veterans taking place this weekend, Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) preempted his regular office hours on Sept. 20, for Genesee County residents at Genesee Community College.

The office hours resume as normal from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 27.

Cornell extension's annual meeting is Oct. 3 at Terry Hills, public welcome

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County Annual Meeting will take place Thursday, Oct. 3 at Terry Hills in Batavia.

Cornell Cooperative Extension's Finance Committee meeting, public welcome

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County Finance Committee Board of Directors will meet at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013. The meeting will be held at the Extension Center at 420 E. Southern Gospel music performed by Crist Family at Batavia Assembly of God

A Southern Gospel Group that has visited before, The Crist Family, will be back for a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at the Batavia Assembly of God Church. A free will offering will be taken.

Transition Day at Batavia High School for freshmen and transfer students

Batavia High School will be hosting a Transition Day for freshmen and transfer students from 8 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 5.

Incoming freshmen, transfer students and pre-approved Link Leaders will be the only students attending school on this day. Upperclassmen should not attend school on this day.

The first day of classes for all BHS students is Friday, Sept. 6.

Stafford Historical Society meeting -- museum plans, charter status, Taste of Stafford report

Stafford Historical Society will have its regular monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 28, in the Stafford Town Hall Courtroom, located at 8903 Route 237.

We will be discussing the business of the society, future plans of the Museum, the Taste of Stafford report and the status of the Society Charter.

GC Women's Republican Club annual Lucky Numbers event

The Genesee County Women’s Republican Club will host its annual Lucky Numbers event which will be held Thursday, Aug. 22 at the Batavia Country Club, 7909 Batavia Byron Road, Batavia.

The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6:30.

The annual Stuff the Bus event to help deserving local children get ready for school this fall will be held at the Walmart parking lot in Batavia from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 22. Look for the Community Action School Bus.

New school supplies, gift cards and cash donations are needed. The event is sponsored by Community Action Angels, Head Start, The Salvation Army and the Community Action Partnership.
