BHS Production Club presents Elton John and Tim Rice version of 'Aida'

"Aida: The Timeless Love Story" will be presented by the Batavia High School Production Club at 7:30 p.m. on March 7 and 8 in the school auditorium, located at 260 St. Street in the City of Batavia.

The musical is based on the popular Broadway version created by Elton John, who wrote the music, and Tim Rice, who wrote the lyrics. In turn, that production is based a the book by Linda Woolverton, Robert Fall and David Henry Hwung.

The original "Aida" is a four-act opera set in ancient Egypt. It was written by Guiseppe Verdi in 1871.

GSO February Concert Highlights Piano, Soprano

The Genesee Symphony Orchestra continues it's 67th season with a concert on Sunday, February 16 at 4 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church on Main St. in Batavia. Pianist Isabelle Aubin and Soprano vocalist Holly Bewlay will be highlighted in a program that includes selections from Leonard Bernstein (West Side Story), Annunzio Mantovani (Poem to the Moon), John Williams, Franz Shubert, and Leroy Anderson.

Tickets are $15 for adults; $10 for seniors; $7 for students (18 & under) and $35 for a family pass. You may purchase tickets at GoArt, Roxy's Music Store or the Batavia Senior Center in Batavia, or at the Bank of Castile in LeRoy. Tickets are also available online at www.geneseesymphony.com

 

Baseball sign-ups for Batavia Minor Leagues

Registration for Batavia Minor Leagues baseball will be inside the Batavia Country Mall, outside of Sunny's Restaurant, from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday March 7th.

Registration fee is $50 due at time of sign-up. The fee will increase to $75 for any player registered after March 7th.

Assemblyman Hawley holds office hours Friday afternoon at GCC

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,C,I-Batavia) is holding regular office hours for Genesee County residents at Genesee Community College from 1 to 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14th. The office hours will be attended by staff members from Assemblyman Hawley's office.

The location is in Room T123 in the Conable Technology Building at the college, location at 1 College Road in the Town of Batavia.

The 139th Assembly District, which Hawley represents, contains all of Genesee County.

District 6 Legislator Gregg Torrey holds office hours at Bethany Town Hall

Legislator Gregg H. Torrey (R,C,I-Bethany) is holding office hours for Genesee County residents of Legislative District #6 at the Bethany Town Hall Conference Room from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 15.

The 6th Legislative District, which Torrey represents, consists of the towns of Alexander, Bethany and Pavilion.

Members of the public are invited to share concerns and ideas on the issues facing County government.

“I strongly encourage those who are able to attend to come and make their voices heard,” Torrey said.

Spend an evening at HLOM with Abe Lincoln

Join us for “An Evening with Abraham Lincoln” at the Holland Land Office Museum on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014 beginning at 6 p.m.

County Clerk Don Read and Historian/Teacher Gregory Kinal will take us on a journey through the life of Abraham Lincoln to bring a sense of humanity to the myth and legend that is Lincoln, with a musical and pictorial conclusion.

This informative and entertaining program is part of Arts Awareness Month. The opening reception and presentation will be $5 per person, but there is no charge to visit the exhibit during “Arts Awareness Month."

Feb. 13 is deadline to buy tickets for first 'Big Hearts for Helicopters' Mercy Flight fundraiser at the Downs

Mercy Flight and Batavia Downs Gaming will host a fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Batavia Downs Gaming facility. Our first Big Hearts for Helicopters fundraiser will be held from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The event will have a Valentine's Day-themed buffet dinner featuring roasted top sirloin beef with Merlot mushroom sauce, chicken Marsala, pasta primavera, mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad bar, desserts, coffee and soda. Dinner will be available from 6:30 tp 9 p.m. and there will also be a cash bar throughout the event.

Live 'Rebel Music Night' at HLOM - from Confederate Civil War songs to Allman Bros. & Lynyrd Skynyrd

Songs of the South will be performed by local musicians at the Holland Land Office Museum at a fundraiser Friday entitled "Rebel Music Night."

Come enjoy traditional Confederate Civil War songs and Southern Rock classics made famous by artists such as ZZ Top, The Outlaws, The Eagles, The Allman Brothers, Marshall Tucker, Charlie Daniels, Creedence Clearwater Revivial and Lynryd Skynryd.

Cost is $7. Time is 7 to 10 p.m. The museum is located in the City of Batavia at 131 W. Main St.

Genesee-Wyoming Parents Against High Stakes Tests hosts workshop and Q&A at Coffee Culture

Genesee-Wyoming Parents Against High Stakes Tests will be holding an informal workshop and Q&A session for parents interested in refusing the NYS tests. We will have sample letters, legal documents, and a couple of experts on hand to answer questions.

Deadline is Feb. 24 for tickets to Zonta Club's auction / luncheon with Roaring '20s theme

Zonta Club of Batavia – Genesee County is hosting a Lucky Number Auction and Luncheon with a Roaring '20s theme on Saturday March 8 at the Sacred Heart Church in Batavia.

BATAVIA -- Things are getting sweet at YWCA this month with a special cookies and confections program during The YES! Cafe.

High Voltage Tattoo & Piercing's third annual charity fundraiser

High Voltage Tattoo & Piercing will be holding its 3rd annual charity fundraiser on Saturday, Dec. 14th from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. We will have three tattoo artists and a body piercer working all day. We will be offering $30 tattoos and $15 piercings.

One-hundred percent of the funds raised from tattoos, piercings, tips, donations and after-care products will go to charity. We will post pictures of designated tattoo designs and lettering styles that we will be offering on the 14th very soon.
