Terry Abrams speaks at Stafford Historical Society on history of Tonawanda Indian Reservation

At the Stafford Historical Society's meeting on Wednesday June 25 our guest speaker will be Terry C. Abrams, the administrative coordinator of Western New York Association of Historical Agencies (WNYAHA).

He is also vice-president of the Tonawanda Reservation Historial Society and his program will be on the history of the Tonawanda Reservation, including the pre-reservation era, the treaty era, Ely Parker's role in saving the reservation and information about the reservation of today.

Benefit at Elba Firemens' Rec Hall for young burn victim and family

Brian Shuknecht, son of Dave and Peggy Shuknecht, was recently burned in an accident and is in Strong Memorial Hospital with an expected stay of three to four weeks. A spaghetti dinner benefit is planned for him from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, June 14, at Elba Firemens' Rec Hall, located at 7143 Oak Orchard Road.

With burns covering a large portion of his body, he will be enduring at least five skin-graft surgeries with extensive recorvery time. Plus, the family is still recovering from the effects of Dave being seriously injured at work late last year.

Batavia Concert Band's free performance at Centennial Park

The Batavia Concert Band’s 90th season of music-making will run this year with free public concerts in Batavia’s Centennial Park on July 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30, as well as the ever-popular July 4th Picnic in the Park sponsored by GO-ART!

The Batavia Concert Band’s repertoire is wide-ranging in origin, period and style: marches, Big Band and swing numbers; popular songs from musicals and movies; rock favorites arranged for band; classical adaptations; fun songs for kids of all ages, and everything in between.

GC Chamber of Commerce hosts 42nd annual Golf Outing

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce will host its 42 annual Golf Outing on Thursday, July 31, at Terry Hills Golf Course & Banquet Facility, located at 5122 Clinton St. in Batavia.

Cost is $125 per person and includes: Golf cart, lunch and dinner.

The lunch menu includes hot dog or hamburger/cheeseburger.

Dinner includes grilled Italian sausage with peppers and onion, BBQ hamburgers, grilled chicken breats and much more.

Cost is $30 for dinner only. Bring your spouse, coworker, colleagues and friends!

Scramble format; limited to 128 golfers.

May I pour you a drink?" asked Le Roy's smooth-talking Mayor Greg "Porp" Rogers.

"I'll think I'll have a Harvey Wallbanger," replied the beautiful nonprofit volunteer.

"That was popular in the '70s, I remember it like it was yesterday," old Porp said.

"Make it without alcohol though, I'm designated tonight," she said.

"I virgin Wallbanger?"

"Like I said -- I've gotta drive."

Lia Sophia Party at YWCA for this week's Ladies Night Out

Open house and fundraiser to help pay for 'hippotherapy' for disabled children

Children with disabilities can benefit from hippotherapy. What's that? It's providing speech therapy and physical therapy using the movement of a horse.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 31, there will be an open house and fundraiser to benefit ARC of Genesee County for hippotherapy. It will take place at Conrad Country Stables at 2638 Pearl St. (Route 33) just outside of Batavia.

There will be a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, children's games and refreshments.

Spaghetti dinner & raffle at Ascension Parish to benefit cancer-stricken single father of four

A benefit dinner for Adam Figlow will be held on May 31 at Ascension Roman Catholic Parish, located at 15 Sumner St. in the City of Batavia.

Adam is a 35-year-old single father of four who is the custodian at the parish. He was diagnosed in December with spindle cell sarcoma of his left arm. He has since undergone two surgeries and a course of radiation therapy.

Dinner starts at 5 p.m. and the proceeds will help him with his medical expenses. There will be spaghetti, a Chinese auction and 50/50 raffle.

GCC history professor talks about the pivotal year 1964 at Stafford Historical Society meeting

At the Stafford Historical Society meeting on Wednesday May 28, Garth Swanson, professor of History at Genesee Community College, will do a presentation entitled "1964: The Year America Changed." The meeting begins at 7 p.m. in the Stafford Town Hall, 8903 Route 237, and the public is invited.

Swanson will explore the social, cultural and political significance of 1964 on the development of the United States and the Genesee Region.

Cornell extension board meeting, public invited

The Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County Board of Directors will meet at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 19. The meeting will be held at the Extension Center at 420 E. Main St. in Batavia and is open to the public.

Future 2014 CCE Board of Director Meetings will be at the same place/time on Aug. 18 and Dec. 8.

The Miracle Riders will stop by Stan's H-D on Sunday afternoon

The Miracle Riders are coming to town and will be making a stop at Stans H-D for dinner on Sunday, May 18. They will arrive at about 3 p.m. and a local family is hosting them for dinner.

If you'd like to meet them, encourage them, and/or donate to their cause, stop by Stan's. The following morning they leave for Toledo, Ohio.

Genesee Chorale performs Dvorak's Requiem Mass with full orchestra and soloist

The Genesee Chorale, under the direction of Ric Jones and accompanied by Joanne Cole, is wrapping up preparations for their Spring concert, a presentation of Antonin Dvorak’s Requiem Mass, complete with full-orchestra accompaniment and soloist.

In Batavia, the Chorale’s performance of the Requiem will be Sunday, June 8, and will take place in the Chorale’s home at St. James Episcopal Church, 405 E. Main St., beginning at 4 p.m.

Genesee Chorale's first performance of the season - Dvorak's Requiem Mass at historic Pillars Estate in Albion

The Genesee Chorale, under the direction of Ric Jones and accompanied by Joanne Cole, is wrapping up preparations for their Spring concert, a presentation of Antonin Dvorak’s Requiem Mass, complete with full orchestra accompaniment and soloist.

Their first performance will be a unique one: the Mass will be performed at the historic Pillars Estate in Albion on Friday, June 6, in their Grand Ballroom. There, patrons will be able to enjoy complimentary wine and hors d’oeuvres at 6:30 p.m. with the performance beginning at 7 p.m.

Eat at Denny's in Corfu tonight, 20 percent (pre-tax) will go to no-kill shelter in Wyoming County

The Wyoming County SPCA is having a benefit at Denny's in Corfu today, May 14, from 4 to 10 p.m.

Twenty percent of the pre-tax proceeds go directly to the Wyoming County SPCA, which is a no-kill shelter.

Free food at mobile pantry at First Presbyterian Church, Elba - no income limit

The First Presbyterian Church of Elba, located at 23 N. Main St. in Elba, is holding a free mobile food pantry from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21.

Fresh produce, baked goods, packaged food will be provided by FoodLink of Rochester. The exact food items available are not known, but fresh produce will be available. There is no income verification required and no ID is necessary, but you must be 18 years old to pick up food from the pantry.

Please provide your own bags/cart/vehicle to transport items to your home.

You're invited to a spaghetti dinner in recognition of GC Foster Parents Month

Enjoy a spaghetti dinner at the Generation Center beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday, May 9, in recognition of Genesee County Foster Parents Month.

The event is sponsored by the Holland Land Office Museum. Cost is $9 at the door or $8 pre-sale. Mark Graczyk, "Hidden History" columnist and managing editor for the Batavia Daily News, with be the featured speaker. There will be live music by Chordially Yours.

The Generation Center is located at 15 Center St., behind the Masonic Temple building in Downtown Batavia.

Bone marrow match sought for Oakfield volunteer firefighter Bill Kegler; a mouth swab is all it takes

Bill Kegler, left, spent 22 years in the military and has been fighting fires since he was 18. Now he is fighting a different enemy, and hoping his winning hand gets dealt next week.

Kegler is a Pavilion resident and six-year member of the Community Fire Company; he is pictured above with Vice President Nick Wright. He is battling myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a disease that causes poorly formed or dysfunctional blood cells.

He needs to find a bone marrow match to fight the disease
