Knights of Columbus Chicken BBQ at St. Mary's

Our Lady Knights of Columbus invite you to a Chicken BBQ on Sunday at St. Mary's Church, 20 Ellicott St. in Batavia. It will start at 10:30 a.m. and continue until sold out.

Each individual dinner includes 1/2 chicken, macaroni salad, baked beans, a roll and butter. The proceeds will go toward local charities.

Historical program: How 1918 Spanish Flu affected Genesee County

A historical program about how the Spanish Flu impacted Genesee County will take from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 7 at the Genesee County Park and Forest Nature Center.

It is located at 11095 Bethany Center Road in East Bethany. Pre-registration is required by calling (585) 344-1122. Cost is $5 per person; $10 per family.

In 1918, a deadly influenza pandemic erupted during the final stages of World War I.

Library Lego Club for kids starts

The Library Lego Club for children age 6 and up begins on Wednesday, Sept. 22, at the Richmond Memorial Library, 19 Ross St. in Batavia.

It is from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Children's Room on the first and third Wednesday of each month.

The program is free but registration is required.

The Friends of the Library provide the Legos.

Annual Fur Ball to benefit shelter animals

The 8th Annual Fur Ball will be at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9 at the Holiday Inn, located at 8250 Park Road in Batavia.

The event is sponsored by the Volunteers for Animals of Batavia and all proceeds go to spay and neuter animals at the Genesee County Animal Shelter before they are adopted.

Eatery offers a free drink for fire, police, military

In appreciation for the work performed by fire, police and military personnel, Center Street Smoke House is offering one free drink to them starting at 9 p.m. Saturday, 9/11.

Proper I.D., of course, is required.

"Come to the Center Street Smoke House as we honor those who we will never forget,"  says the flier about the special.

Live music starts at 9:30 p.m.

Fashion show to benefit local animal shelter

Maurices, a women's clothing store in Tops Plaza in Batavia, is having a fashion show to benefit animals on Saturday, Sept. 18.

"Rescues & Runways" is a national campaign created by Maurices, which has more than 750 locations nationwide.

The fashion show is at 2 p.m. in the store at 8351 Lewiston Road. There will also be a silent auction to raise money. All the funds raised will go to the Genesee County Animal Shelter.

Present Tense celebrates five-year anniversary

Present Tense Books & Gifts, Batavia's premiere full-service bookstore, will be celebrating an important milestone on Saturday, Sept. 18. An anniversary party lasting from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. will celebrate five years of successful business.

Free and open to the public, the anniversary event will take place at the bookstore, which is at 101 Washington Ave. The festivities will include refreshments, prizes and a raffle, as well as the annual fall open house and holiday preview.

Elba in the 1940s is topic of presentation

The 1940s is the topic of a presentation Sept. 16 by Helen Batchellor, of Stafford, including stories related to Elba.

She is a native of Elba and will bring items from that era to view. According to the host, the Elba Historical Society, her programs are always entertaining.

It will be at the Historical Society of Elba's Museum on Maple Avenue.

Refreshments will be served at 6:30 p.m. and the presentation is at 7. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Crossroads House presents 'Musical Memories' at City Church

Crossroads House will be hosting another 'Musical Memories' concert Saturday, Sept. 25, at the City Church, at 210 E. Main St. in Batavia. All proceeds will benefit Crossroads House and go toward two months care for terminally ill residents.

The concert will begin at 7 p.m. and include performances by Greece Jazz Band, Derek Reese & Quartet, St. Joseph's Brass Ensemble, Ghost Riders, Mini Drum & Bugle Corps, Mighty St. Joe's Alumni Drum Corps and special guest appearances.

Free tour to focus on all things alpaca

The Grant family of North Bergen invites people on a 30-mile tour of Alpaca Country, which includes a tour of their alpaca farm at 6499 N. Lake Road in Bergen.

This event is free, open to the public, and lasts from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 25-26.

The tour includes five farms and will expose people to the wonders of the alpaca, which is the world's oldest domesticated animal.

Time capsule opening to celebrate YWCA's Centennial

The YWCA Board of Directors invites the public to come to their time capsule opening at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 12.

The capsule is currently held inside the cornerstone of the YWCA, which is at 301 North St. in Batavia. People will get to see what kinds of things the capsule has been keeping secret for 100 years, as well as enjoy a reception, tours and information on the YWCA's services.

GoArt! hosts 'Art Trail'

GoArt!'s 2010 artist road show will feature the work of various artists throughout Genesee County. It is free and open to the public.

They will be opening up their studios and galleries to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 18. Music and refreshments will be provided at some of the sites.

A map of participating locations will be available at GoArt!, on E. Main St. in Batavia, and at each site the week before the event.

Insurance 'rock star' will be keynote speaker at GRIP dinner

Genesee Region Insurance Professionals (GRIP) will hold a special networking
event and dinner at Larry's Steakhouse in Batavia on Tuesday, Sept. 28.

It starts at 5 p.m. and features the nationally recognized "rock star" of the insurance industry, Chris Amhrein. He's the co-founder of www.insuranceisfun.com.

WNY Gas & Steam Engine Association hosts 44th annual Fall Rally

The WNY Gas & Steam Engine Association's 44th annual "Fall Rally" will be going on Sept. 9 through Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m. each day. It will be held at 10400 Gillate Road in Alexander.

The event will include live entertainment, food and beverages (including a full dinner), tractor pulls, and over 1,000 pieces of equipment. This year, the rally will be focusing on Case tractors and Witte small engines.

Admission is $6 per adult, free for children ages 12 and under.

Batavia Downs hosts golf tourney for Mercy Flight

Batavia Downs Casino will be hosting its second annual "Hackers for Helicopters" golf tournament from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. on Wednesday. The tourney will take place at the Terry Hills Golf Course, at 5122 Clinton St. Road in Batavia.

Darien Lake hosts WNY Emergency Services Appreciation Day

Darien Lake Resort will host the inaugural WNY Emergency Services Appreciation Day on 9/11 -- to honor the heroic contributions of emergency services personnel on that day in 2001.

It will honor fallen heroes and raise funds for charity. Firefighters and their families are invited to enjoy the day together with fun activities and raffles that provide guests with the chance to win amazing prizes.

Batavia Business and Professional Women's Club meets Thursday

The Batavia Business and Professional Women's Club meets on the first Thursday of every month from September through June. This month, the group will meet at the Cornerstone Church, at 2583 Main Road (at the corner of Slusser Road) in East Pembroke.

Community clothing giveaway at First Presbyterian

The First Presbyterian Church of Batavia is holding a Community Clothing Giveaway from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 30.

There will be clothing for infants, boys, girls, men, women, including shoes, sneakers, purses and hats. Winter clothing and work/business clothes are available, too.

Community clothing giveaway at First Presbyterian

The First Presbyterian Church of Batavia is holding a Community Clothing Giveaway on Sunday and Monday, Aug. 29 and 30.

Sunday's will be held from noon to 4:30  p.m. On Monday, it will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The church asks the public to drop of clean, gently used clothing at the church, located at 300 E. Main St., from noon to 3 p.m. today and Thursday (Aug. 26). (There were previous drop-offs, too.)
