Last day to register for 'All That Glitters Dinner Dance' for seniors

The Senior Spice Committee, a program of Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism & Substance Abuse (GCASA), invites Genesee County senior citizens to the “All That Glitters Dinner Dance” on Saturday, Dec. 4. It will be at First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St. in Batavia, from 5 until 8:30 p.m.

Registration must be received no later than Friday, Nov. 26.

Brent Persia CD release party at Center Street Smoke House

Brent Persia is a local singer/songwriter/guitarist who will be holding a CD release party at Center Street Smoke House on Tuesday evening.

Flute choir from Rochester to perform holiday music

The SilverTones Flute Choir of Rochester will present a free concert of holiday music from 7 to 8 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 6 at the Richmond Memorial Library.

Pizza Gobble

Genesee/Orleans Council on Alcoholism & Substance Abuse (GCASA) invites you to the Annual Pizza Gobble. It will be at St Joseph School, 2 Summit St. in Batavia, from 6 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 23.

The Pizza Gobble is open to the public. Families are encouraged to attend and reexperience the lost art of the family dinner. Come and enjoy pizza from several of Batavia’s pizzerias, dessert, and a chance to win great prizes.

Admission is $1, and we are accepting canned goods to be donated to the Salvation Army.

GCC holds Study Abroad Open House

With the wealth of growing international programs at Genesee Community College, a Study Abroad Open House for interested students is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 18.

The Open House will take place from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union (S104), with 30-minute information sessions about each trip. Faculty representatives will be available to provide information on each program as well as registration materials.

A general information session will take place from 12:30-2:00 p.m. for students interested in learning about all of the study abroad/away opportunities.

Peaceful Genesee hosts nonviolence workshop

Peaceful Genesee, a coalition dedicated to making Genesee County a nonviolent community, will hold the last workshop in a three-part series on nonviolence at the Office for the Aging on Wednesday (Nov. 17).

It is free, open to the public and runs from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The office is located at 2 Bank St. in the City of Batavia.

It will be led by Barry Gan, Ph.D, a philosophy professor and the director of the Center for Nonviolence at St. Bonaventure University. He is also the co-editor -- with Robert L. Holmes -- of the book, "Nonviolence in Theory and Practice."

How to get a government job focus of free GCC workshop

Finding a government job in this tough economy may be a little easier with the help of the Genesee Community College Career Services Center. It will host a Government Job Search workshop from 12:45 to 1:45 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 11 in B307.

It is sponsored by the GCC Career Services Center and Wellness Center and is free and open to the public.

Attendees will learn how to: conduct a focused federal job search; read and understand the GS (general schedule); decipher the verbiage included in job postings and what to look for when evaluating job announcements.

Community hymn sing at St. James

There will be an Interdenominational Community Hymn Sing at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 14 at St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia.

Charles C. Bradley Jr. will accompany by playing the organ.

Everyone who loves to sing hymns or just enjoys listening to them is invited. This program will be recorded and CDs will be available for purchase at a later date.

Sheet music and refreshments are provided. Participants are asked for a $5 donation to benefit the St. James' Restoration Fund.

College honors Veteran's Day with special events Nov. 11

To honor and recognize all active duty, guard, reserve, separated and retired veterans of all branches of the armed services, Genesee Community College is holding special programs in honor of Veteran's Day. Celebrations to honor all veterans will take place on Veteran's Day, Nov. 11.

At the main campus in Batavia, a reception will be held in the Conable Technology Building Lobby from 12:30 – 2 p.m.

Batavia hockey and gymastics teams host 22nd annual Craft & Gift Festival

The 22nd Annual Craft & Gift Festival at Batavia High School will be held from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13.

Santa Claus will be there from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

There will be food available, raffles and lots of vendors.

The school is located at 260 State St. The festival is sponsored by the Batavia High School Blue Devils Hockey Team as well as the Gymnastics Team.

Ham dinner at Indian Falls United Methodist Church

The Indian Falls United Methodist Church is holding a Ham Dinner on Saturday, November 6th from 4 - 7 pm.  The public is welcome!  The ticket prices are: $8 for adults, $7 - Sr. Citizens, $6 - ages 5 - 12 children.  4 and under are free.  Come and have some delicious ham and homemade pie!

Genesee Chorale serves up spaghetti and songs

The Genesee Chorale is hosting a spaghetti w/ meatballs dinner from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6 at the First Presbyterian Church on Main Street in Batavia.

Members of the chorale say it should be fun night as they serve up songs with the spaghetti. Members of the chorale will be entertaining patrons throughout the evening.

Dinner will include spaghetti w/ meatballs, salad, bread, beverage and dessert.

Tickets are available from Genesee Chorale members or at the door: $8 for adults, $5 for children 6-12, and under age 5 free.

City Fire Department holds Open House

The City of Batavia Fire Department will hold an Open House from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Kids are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes. (Adults -- hey, it's a free country!)

There will a demonstration of the Hurst extrication tool, the "Jaws of Life," plus sessions on how to use a fire extinguisher.

Certified city police officers will be on hand to inspect child safety car seats and to install them properly.

There will be fun fire safety activities for children.

Event at casino benefits loved ones of Debbie Maniace

There will be a benefit for the loved ones of Debbie Maniace from noon to 8 p.m. this Sunday at Batavia Downs Casino.

Debbie was 47 when her body was found in Aug. 7 under the Route 33 overpass by the train tracks. Her death remains under investigation.

The Batavia resident left behind children and grandchildren.

Family and friends say she was a loving, caring, giving person who is missed by many.

Sunday's event features a spaghetti dinner, cash bar, Chinese auction and a live band. Cost is $15.

Big mattress sale benefits Batavia High Baseball Team

The Batavia High School Baseball Team is trying a new fundraiser this year to help pay for spring training camp in Florida.

Quality mattress sets at 30 to 60 percent off retail prices will be on sale this Sunday in the school's big gym from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They may still have to do other fundraisers, but they hope to raise a good chunk money Sunday.

This novel idea has proven to be successful for sports teams at other schools in the area, including Albion, Medina, Akron and Holley. All profits go directly to the team.

Le Roy medical equipment business has grand re-opening today

Durable Medical Equipment and Supplies in Le Roy is having its grand re-opening today until 5:30 p.m.

The store boasts new construction and a larger showroom to "better serve its customers."

"We are excited to celebrate with the wonderfully supportive community here in Le Roy," said owner Amy Swanson.

'Bash for Ash' will aid leukemia victim and her family

Ashley Bedard is a graduate of Pembroke Central School and she is battling leukemia. To help Ashley, and her mother, JoAnne McInerney, while Ashley undergoes treatment for the disease, there's going to be a fundraiser this Saturday.

"Bash for Ash" will offer a steak dinner, Chinese auction and music, all for $10 per person. It will be at Holy Name of Mary Church Hall on West Avenue in East Pembroke from 4 to 11 p.m., with dinner served from 5 to 7 p.m.
