33rd annual Picnic in the Park

The 33rd annual Picnic in the Park celebration will be held on Monday, July 4, in Centennial Park, Batavia.

It's a free day-long event featuring activities for families and children, folk art events, entertainment and refreshment stands. Each year, the event draws approximately 3,000 to 5,000 attendees.

Artists and crafters exhibit and sell their work – all handmade by them.

Two cookbooks are focus of Books Sandwiched In

Cookbooks are the focus of Books Sandwiched In, from 12:10 to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, May 11 at Richmond Memorial Library.

In the Gallery Room, Jennifer Reardon will review "The Food Matters Cookbook," by Mark Bittman, and "One Big Table: A Portrait of Amercian Cooking," by Molly O'Neill.

Free, two-day Health Fair at GCC

A two-day Health Fair is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10 in the Forum of Genesee Community College's Batavia campus.

It was developed and managed by the students and faculty of GCC's three major health care divisions -- Nursing, Physical Therapy, and Respiratory Care.

Local residents are invited to this free event to not only gather important information about cutting-edge healthcare needs, treatments and diagnostic developments, but also enjoy learning some preventive tips for maintaining healthy lifestyles.

Pep Rally - meet the 2011 Muckdogs, enjoy games, raffles, prizes

Come and meet your 2011 Muckdogs on June 15. Admission is free. Be the first to meet this year's players, who will be available to sign autographs, take pictures and chat.

Gates at Dwyer Stadium open at 6 p.m. (rain date is June 16).

Come show your support for our Muckdogs and get "Pepped up" for the home opener on Friday, June 17!

FREE games for the kids and concession stands will be open.

Whiffle Ball Tournament -- Anyone in attendance can participate!

Richmond Library budget vote and trustee election

The Richmond Memorial Library, at 19 Ross St. in Batavia, will hold its budget vote and Board of Trustees election today from noon until 9 p.m.

All residents of the Batavia City School District are eligible to vote. Voting will take place in the library's Gallery Room.

Informational meeting about fall literary tour in New England

There's going to be an informational meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 10, at Richmond Memorial Library regarding the upcoming New England Authors Literary Tour.

This tour is being presented by six area public libraries and will take place Oct. 21-23 in Massachusetts. That's during the peak of beautiful, colorful autumn leaves and will include stops at major literary and historic sites in Massachusetts.

SUPER MAMMOTH garage sale at St. Joe's School

The seventh annual SUPER MAMMOTH Indoor Garage Sale to benefit St. Joe's School is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. this Saturday, April 30. The school is located at 2 Summit St. in the City of Batavia.

There will be tens of thousands of items, 19 cashiers, Clor's chicken BBQ, a homemade bake sale and lots of bargains, including antiques, 25-cent books, outdoor furniture, etc.

City celebrates Earth Day and Arbor Day

From 9 a.m. to noon this Saturday, April 30, the City of Batavia will celebrate both Earth Day and Arbor Day. Rain or shine.

The morning will begin at Austin Park on Jefferson Avenue with an Energy Smart Program presentation. There will also be giveaways and several displays.

Volunteers will then be assigned a City Park or downtown in the area of Main and Ellicott streets to pick up debris. The volunteers will be asked to regroup at Austin Park at 11:45 a.m. for tree planting ceremonies and a complimentary lunch sponsored by Reality Check.

Painting on silk demonstration at Go Art!

A demonstration of painting on silk is being held Tuesday, May 10, at Go Art!, located in the Seymour Place building at 201 E. Main St. in Batavia.

Artists Terry Weber and Marilyn Palotti will conduct the demonstration. The event is sponsored by the Batavia Society of Artists.

Time is from 7 to 9 p.m. The public is welcome for a fee of $3 per person.

Clean-up day at Genesee County Park

Show you care about Earth and pitch in for a clean-up day at the Genesee County Park & Forest from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 30.

Stop at the Nature Center for children's crafts and "orienteering" with the Sea Cadets after clean up. Free tree seedlings. Pizza will be served for lunch.

Chicken BBQ to help Colby family

All proceeds from a chicken BBQ on Saturday planned by the Batavia Area Jaycees will go to help the Colby family.

The group's board of directors decided to use the money to help the family of Jonathan Matthew Colby, 37, of Batavia, who died earlier this month in a car accident on West Main Street.

The BBQ is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 30.

Cost for the dinner is $8 pre-sale or $8.50 the day of the event and includes half a chicken, cole slaw, salt potatoes, roll & butter.

Hotdog stand Saturday at Walmart to benefit shelter animals

Volunteers for Animals will be having a hotdog stand at the Batavia Walmart starting at 11 a.m. this Saturday, April 23.

They will be offering grilled hotdogs, chips and pop with all proceeds going to the animals at the Genesee County Animal Shelter.

They plan to be there until 6 p.m. or until the dogs run out.

They say "We hope you will come out  for a dog and drink to help out the animals at the shelter!"

Assemblyman Hawley holds outreach meeting at Old Courthouse, Batavia

Richmond library has beaded bracelet class for adults

A "Beaded Bracelet Class" will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, May 2, at the Richmond Memorial Library.

Learn how to make a bracelet with silver wire and beads in a class for adults taught by Jen Reardon.

Registration is required and a materials fee of $10 is due at the time of registration.

April's Reel Discussion at Richmond Memorial Library begins at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 28, and this month's movie is the Academy Award winner, "The King's Speech."

Candidates for president and prime minister choose to run, but kings rarely have a choice. Such was the case for Prince Albert, known by family members as "Bertie," whose stutter made public speaking difficult.
