June chamber mixer is Thursday at Brighton Securities

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce will hold its June Business After Hours get-together from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, June 18 at Brighton Securities, located at 212 E. Main St.

Brighton Securities is a local, independently owned stock brokerage and financial services firm with a 40-year history of serving Western New York.

Cost is $5 per member and $10 for non-members. There will be a 50/50 raffle to benefit The Michael Napoleon Foundation, plus door prizes, raffles, hors-d'oeurves and refreshments.

Free boater course offered for safety certification

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R,I,C -- Batavia), the Monroe County Sheriff's Parks and Marine Unit and the NY State Parks Police, will host a free boater safety course for the public on Saturday, June 20.

There is, however, a $10 fee to process a permanent boater safety certificate with the NY State Department of Parks.

It will be held at Hamlin State Park from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.. State law requires all boaters to pass an eight-hour boater-safety course, such as this one, if:

Batavia VA Med Center celebrates 75th year

Since 1934, Batavia VA Medical Center has cared for America's veterans. And to celebrate 75 years of service, the center has lots of festivities planned for Saturday, June 27.

The center is located at 222 Richmond Ave. A parade will kick things off at 1:30 p.m., beginning at the gate opposite Redfield Parkway. This will be followed by a formal program in front of Building 1.

Assemblyman Stephen Hawley will emcee the program with William F. Feeley, director of VA WNY Healthcare System, who will deliver the keynote address.

Car wash to help pay for tombstone of local teen

A charitable car wash, dubbed  a "scrub in for Scotty" is set for 1 p.m. Sunday, June 14 in the parking lot in front of Billygoats, next to Settlers Family Restaurant in Batavia.

The event will help a Settlers' waitress, Diane, pay for her son's grave marker. All donations gratefully welcome.

Diane's son, Scotty R. "Scooter" Johnson, died unexpectedly at his parents' Oakfield home May 25. He was just 19 years old. The family needs the community's help to offset funeral expenses. There will be food and beverages available at the "scrub in."

Batavia Area Jaycees hold 75th anniversary reunion

The Batavia Area Jaycees are hosting a 75th anniversary reunion at the Muckdogs' game Monday, June 22, at Dwyer Stadium. The event is a chance for past and present Jaycee members to enjoy some camaraderie and a baseball game.

There will be a family picnic in the "Hot Corner" party tent and food includes Italian sausage with peppers and onions, BBQ chicken, char-grilled Zwiegles hots, watermelon, potato chips, pasta salad, macaroni salad and soda pop.

Downtown Batavia Public Market opens June 25

Downtown Batavia Public Market is starting its third year on June 25 and it will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays through Sept.10. It is centrally located at the corner of Ellicott (Rte 63) and Center streets with plenty of convenient parking.

The market will offer a full variety of fresh produce, fruit, bread, cookies, pies, honey, jams, BBQ sauce, cut and dried flowers and lots more.

Vendors include: J & W Fresh Farm Produce, Nice Farms, Schwab Farms, S & T Crist Farms, Alston’s BBQ Sauce, and Pressed Flowers by L. Regatuso.

Pioneer Stagecoach Day planned in LeRoy

Pioneer Stagecoach Day will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 7 in LeRoy.

Papa John's Eagle, which used to be a stagecoach stop, will offer children's rides, food and entertainment. It is located at 9 Main St.

There will also be a car cruise, sidewalk sales and raffles.

19th Hole Golf Raffle in Pavilion

The 14th Annual 19th Hole Golf Raffle to benefit the American Red Cross in Genesee County will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 30 in Pavilion.

It will be held at BW's Restaurant (Davis' Countryside Meadows), located at 11070 Perry Road. Tickets are $10 to enter, including all you can eat and all you can drink (beer and soda). Ten major prizes will be raffled off.

Bergen showcases war memorabilia this Memorial Day weekend

Bergen Town Hall will display historic war memorabilia throughout Memorial Day Weekend. Viewing is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Monday May 23-25. Donations are welcome. The town hall is located at 13 S. Lake Ave.

East Pembroke Flea Market and Craft Show

The East Pembroke Volunteer Fire Department is holding a flea market and craft show today (Thursday, May 21) to benefit the department.

It's free and takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.. More than 30 vendors are expected to showcase their wares. The fire department is located at 630 Main Road in Corfu.

Chestnut Hill hosts evening mixer to benefit domestic violence program

Chestnut Hill Country Club is sponsoring an after-work get-together from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 21 to benefit Genesee County YWCA Domestic Violence Program. (The weather forecast that day is warm and sunny!)

There will be a 50/50 raffle, door prizes, hors d'oeuvres, refreshments and a cash bar.

Troop A holds annual Memorial Day Service

The New York State Police Troop A will hold its Annual Memorial Day Service at 10 a.m. Friday, May 15.

It will take place at Troop A Headquarters, located at 4525 West Saile Drive in Batavia. 

Current and retired troopers will honor all Troop A members who have lost their lives while serving the New York State Police.

Drug Free Genesee County Coalition meeting

The next meeting of the Drug Free Genesee County Coalition is set for Wednesday morning June 3 at Terry Hills Restaurant and Banquet Facility.

The restaurant is located at 5122 Clinton Street Road in Batavia. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m.. The meeting starts at 10 and runs until 11:30. You're invited to treat yourself to lunch afterward.

Teen scene favorites to play Darien Park

Family-friendly teen favorites Jordan Pruitt, Brianna James & Varsity Fanclub will perform at Darien Lake's Laser Stage beginning at 5 p.m. Saturday, May 16.

The concert is free with admission to the park. The park is located off Route 77, six miles south of I-90 exit 48A.

Taste of Stafford 2009 highlights the year 1929

The Stafford Historical Society's annual Taste of Stafford will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, July 9 in Illette Park.

Bring your lawn chair and enjoy music, food and good company.

This year, the event focuses on people in 1929. There was more going on that year than the crash of the U.S. economy and the start of the Great Depression. The historical society would like residents to share their memories and family histories -- those school house days, the smell of homemade food cooking, dad working the fields, hitching up a horse for the first time, etc.

Bikers wanted for Crossroads House Charity Ride

Sunday Aug. 2 is when this year's Crossroads House Charity Ride takes place. It benefits the comfort home for the dying in Batavia.

The ride will be held in memory of Dennis Bateman, who was South Byron Assistant Fire Chief and Red Knight Member. Stan's Harley-Davidson, Inc., is the sponsoring dealership.

The self-guided ride begins at Stan's, located at 4425 W. Saile Drive in Batavia. It's off Route 98 just north of the Thruway. The ride ends at the South Byron Fire Department at 7389 Route 237 in South Byron.

Barbecue and fun to benefit children

Clor's and the Rite Aid on West Main Street in Batavia is holding a barbecue to benefit for Children's Miracle Network, which supports Women and Children's hospital of Buffalo.

This is the 2nd annual cookout for kids. It will take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 17.

There will be live music from "The Red Hot Trio," 50/50, four gift-bag raffles, balloons and fun for all ages.

Clor's chicken BBQ is $8. Raffle tickets are one for $3 or two for $5. The Rite Aid is located at 4155 W. Main St.
