Buffalo weatherman performs Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol' Dec. 20

The Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council (GO ART!) is proud to host Mike Randall in Batavia on Sunday, Dec. 20 for “Charles Dickens Presents: A Christmas Carol.”

The program will take place at 2 p.m. at St. James’ Episcopal Church, 405 E. Main St. (Route 5) in Batavia.

Downtown businesses wanted to take part in Christmas in the City Festival

Downtown Batavia businesses are wanted to join in the holiday spirit at the 14th Annual Christmas in the City Festival, which will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4.

Activities will include entertainment in the stores and on the main stage at the Batavia City Centre, a variety of vendors selling food and holiday gifts. There will be free horse and wagon rides, coupons for Saturday shoppers and lots more for all ages.

Tuesday is National Memory Screening Day

Tomorrow is National Memory Screening Day. The Alzheimer’s Foundation of American (AFA) and Assemblyman Steve Hawley encourage all seniors in the City of Batavia and the surrounding region to have a memory screening.

The free screening will available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Kmart Pharmacy, located at 8363 Lewiston Roadin Batavia.

GCC to hold open auditions for 'Chicago' and 'Anansi the Spider'

The Genesee Center for the Arts at Genesee Community College is holding open auditions for two musicals, scheduled for the spring of 2010.

Auditions for "Chicago" and children's theater "Anansi the Spider and the Middle Passage" are scheduled at 6 p.m. for Monday, Dec. 14 and Tuesday, Dec. 15 in the Stuart Steiner Theatre at the Batavia Campus. These auditions are open to the public and all ages and types of actors are welcome.

School of Irish dance holds fundraiser to pay for competition costs

There will be a fundraiser for the McMahon School of Irish Dance from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22 at St. Joseph School, located at 2 Summit Drive in Batavia.

Teams and solo competitors from the dance school will provide entertainment. Come out and support the dancers in their effort to raise money to compete in the Regional Championships in Philadelphia over Thanksgiving.

Spaghetti dinner Wednesday to benefit local cancer charity

Genesee Cancer Assistance will benefit from a big spaghetti dinner from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11.

The charitable fundraiser will be at the Holy Name of Mary Church hall, located at 8656 Church St. in East Pembroke.

Cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children 5 to 12. Takeouts are available.

For tickets call, 343-5553, or just show up and pay at the door.

It's sponsored by Francesco Rinaldi, Tops Market in Batavia and the Batavia Downs Casino.

Ranzenhofer holds veterans outreach program Thursday night

Sen. Michael H. Ranzenhofer will hold a Veterans Outreach Program from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12  in the auditorium of the Batavia VA Medical Center, located at 222 Richmond Ave.

The focus will be to inform veterans about benefits as well as present special opportunities for veterans, including networking and business start-up programs.

Your elected officials want an earful Nov. 4

Assemblyman Steve Hawley (R, I, C – Batavia) is again partnering with State Senator Michael Ranzenhofer and Congressman Christopher J. Lee to hold a community meeting to better assist Western New York residents.

The next one is set for 9 to 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4 in the legislative conference room at the Old Courthouse on Main Street in the City of

. All members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend.

The meeting will include representatives from the elected officials' offices.

Annual chamber luncheon meeting hosts CEO of NY Business Council

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce invites the community to attend its Annual Meeting to be held 11:45 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 22 at Bohn’s Restaurant.

This year’s keynote speaker will be Kenneth Adams, president and CEO of The Business Council of New York State.

It is the state's largest and most influential business association representing more than 3,000 member businesses, chambers of commerce, and professional and trade associations.

4-H achievement and family fun night set for Oct. 30 at the fairgrounds

The 4-H Achievement/Fun Night will be held on Friday, Oct. 30 at the Genesee County Fairgrounds – Kennedy Building. This fun-filled event starts at 5:30 p.m and is open to all 4-H families. "4-H appropriate" Halloween Costumes are encouraged.

Meet the candidates of Stafford Oct. 29

The third biennial “Meet the Candidates Night” will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday Oct. 29 at the Stafford Town Hall Courtroom on Route 237.
 
The candidates for office of Town Council include: Ronald Panek (R), of Thwing Road; Don Mullen (R), of Sweetland Road; and Michelle Macan Mouery (D), of Main Road.

For Highway Superintendent: Steven Boldt (R, D,C ), of Clipnock Road; and James Pontillo (C), of Griswold Road.

Business Education Alliance will celebrate 20 years

The Genesee County Business Education Alliance celebrates its 20th Anniversary at its annual breakfast at 7:30 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 4. It will be at Terry Hills Golf Course and Banquet Facility in Batavia

From the inception of the BEA, numerous partnerships have been formed between education and businesses, and many of them continue to this day. Its continuing mission is to foster partnerships and assist students in preparing for the world of work.

7th Annual Fur Ball set for Nov. 14

The Volunteers for Animals of Batavia will hold the 7th annual Fur Ball beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14 at the Holiday Inn.

It is located at 8250 Park Road in Batavia.

The public is invited to attend and enjoy desserts and refreshments with friends.

There will be oodles of fun, including a Chinese auction, door prizes, raffles, including a 50/50 and special ones to win a cat tree and a wireless "invisible" fence.

St. Joseph's annual Popcorn Ball will celebrate school's 50th year

The annual Popcorn Ball to benefit St. Joseph School is being overseen by Jill Kratz. The Nov. 14 event will celebrate the school's Golden Anniversary -- 50 years of excellence in education.

The selection of Kratz was not happenstance for this momentous occassion. It was made in no small part because of her roots in the community.

She is the granddaughter of the original Popcorn Ball organizers -- Anthony and Teresa Peca.

Pavilion Library holds two-day book sale, Oct. 16-17, at fire hall

The Pavilion Public Library will hold its annual Book Sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. this Friday, Oct. 16, and Saturday, Oct. 17. It takes place at the Pavilion Fire Department/ Recreation Hall, located at 11302 S. Lake Road.

The sale will make more room for a large amount of new books.

Paperback -- .50 cents each or five for $2

Local artist's watercolor exhibit kicks off with reception

Local artist Victor Corey brings his talents to Genesee Community College's Lobby Art Gallery with "Watercolor Landscapes." The exhibit will run Oct. 15 through Dec. 1 and feature large-scale watercolor paintings that capture nature and the outdoors in beautiful detail. 

An opening artist's reception is scheduled from 1 to 2 p.m. when the exhibit opens next Thursday.

Woolly Bookworms kicks off Saturday at Richmond library

The book discussion group for youngsters called Woolly BookWorms will hold its first meeting of the season at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10., in the Children's Room at Richmond Memorial Library.

It is located at 19 Ross St. in Batavia.

Woolly BookWorms is for third- through fifth-graders and their favorite adult.

On Saturday, the group will discuss its book selection of the month "Sarah, Plain and Tall," by Patricia MacLachlan.
