Wanted: socks, hats and gloves for the needy. Bring them to Maurices clothing store

A "sock, hat and glove drive" -- with all donations going to benefit Community Action and the less fortunate in our area -- will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 18 at Maurices. The clothing store is located on West Main Street in the Tops Market Plaza.

Erin Coles is coordinating the event.

"'Tis the season of giving," Coles said. "Come out and donate a pair of socks, gloves or a hat...We need items for all ages. New and gently used items only please. See you there!"

Hurricane Sandy emergency aid drive at Elba firemen's rec hall

An event to collect all kinds of stuff to aid victims of Hurricane Sandy is taking place from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at the Elba Firemen's Recreation Hall. That's at the intersection of routes 98 and 262 in Elba.

A native Elban who now lives in Staten Island is driving here with semi-truck to load up on donations of clothes, nonperishable food and all the basic necessities to help his helpless neighbors. NO MONETARY DONATIONS!

Cancer benefit for Paul Lamendola

A cancer benefit for Paul Lamendola will be held at the Batavia Country Club from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. Cost is a $10 donation per dinner, which includes pulled pork roast and two sides, plus beverage.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction.

Paul has been fighting colon cancer since March. He has been laid off from work, lost his medical insurance, and has very expensive medical costs for medicine, surgery and equipment. Please come out and support Paul in his journey.

A wicked good time is in store at City Slickers Bar & Grill in Batavia starting at 8 p.m. this Saturday, Oct. 27.

Admission is FREE to this Halloween party. There will be karaoke with DJ Marc Tillery, plus, dancing, contests, prizes and drink specials until the witching hour.

Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes so dress to impress!

O-A senior class hosts public forum on political platforms of Obama and Romney

The Oakfield-Alabama High School Senior Class invites the public to a community forum where they will explain the political platforms of President Obama and Governor Romney.

Local, state and regional representatives will be on hand to explain the impact of these platforms on Western New York.

The forum begins at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 30, in the school auditorium, located at 7001 Lewiston Road, in Oakfield.

Novelist John Gardner's works celebrated with readings, food and fun at the Pok-A-Dot

Batavia-born novelist John Gardner will be celebrated with a night of readings, food and fun on Saturday, Oct. 27.

The John Gardner Society, in conjunction with Genesee Community College, is sponsoring the Halloween-themed celebration at 8 p.m. at the Pok-a-Dot diner at Ellicott and Liberty streets in Batavia.

Free fitness class offered at new studio in Harvester Center, Batavia

At 9 a.m. on Saturday,Oct. 27 a new business -- move. fitness studio -- will host a FREE fitness class event in celebration of their grand opening. move. is located at 56 Harvester Ave., in the Batavia Industrial Center, with a street-side entrance.

There will be a 90-minute mash-up of their Zumba, Pilates and weight-less toning classes, as well as refreshments and gift certificate giveaways after class!

Annual Fall Harvest Auction of Stafford Historical Society

It is that time of the year again -- Harvest Time. The annual Fall Harvest Auction of the Stafford Historical Society will take place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, in the courtroom of the Stafford Town Hall.

Bergen-Byron HS seniors hold haunted house and fall fest to help March of Dimes

Members of the Byron-Bergen High School Senior Class will sponsor a haunted house and fall festival from 4 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27 , at the Grow-in-Kids Child Care Center.

It is located at 42 Rochester St. in Bergen.

In lieu of an admittance charge, the students will be asking for donations for the March of Dimes.

GC Historians present Ghost Walk tour

The Genesee County Historians will present the 2012 Ghost Walk on Friday, Oct. 19.

Cost is $10 and tickets are available at the Engine House at 3 W. Main St. in the City of Batavia. Tours are at 7:30 and 8 p.m.

For those unable to walk two hours, the length of the tour, a Power Point presentation is available for viewing.

Donations of scrap metal wanted to supplement St. Joe's Super Mammoth Sale

To supplement funds for our SUPER MAMMOTH Sale next April, we will be providing an opportunity for people to donate any scrap metal they would like to dispose of (iron, tin, steel, aluminum, copper, brass, stainless steel, etc). Ed Arnold Scrap Processors will assist us in receiving, collecting and sorting the metals and then pay us for its worth.

Rep. Hochul holds satellite office hours in Batavia

Representative Kathy Hochul (NY-26) will hold satellite office hours in Batavia from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 16, in the second-floor conference room at city hall, One Batavia City Centre.

This will provide constituents of New York’s 26th Congressional District with direct access to Rep. Hochul’s district staff to assist with casework issues.

Community Harvest Supper at the YWCA, deadline to reserve seats is Oct. 5

A Community Harvest Supper will be held under tents on the lawn of the Batavia YWCA from 5 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10.

The event celebrates local agriculture and our community. It will include face-painting, pumpkin painting and live entertainment.

The autumn supper will include beef and vegetable stews, stuffing, potatoes, breads, mac 'n' cheese, and desserts.

Cost is $6 per person, or $20 for a group of four. Reservations are required and the deadline is Friday, Oct. 5.
