Democrat and Chronicle investigative reporter Gary Craig speaks at GCC for Law Day

Along with thousands of programs across the United States, Genesee Community College will recognize National Law Day tonight with an Alumni and Friends Reception with keynote speaker Rochester investigative reporter Gary Craig.

There will also be an Honor Society Induction Ceremony into the Lambda Epsilon Chi (LEX) Chapter of two GCC students.

National Law Day, celebrated annually on May 1, is designed to shed light on how laws protect liberties and the process by which the legal system strives to achieve justice.

Meet Batavia City Court Judge and candidate Durin Rogers for coffee and conversation at HLOM

The Committee to Elect Judge Rogers invites the public to come meet with Batavia City Court Judge Durin Rogers for coffee and a conversation on May 16 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the Holland Land Office Museum, and on May 25 at the Richmond Memorial Library from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

This is a great opportunity for the residents of Batavia to learn more about the job of Batavia City Court Judge, answer questions about the election process and get to know the candidate.

At Stuart Steiner Theatre: 'Freedom: A Modern Dance Show About Your Rights'

As the Genesee Center for the Arts at Genesee Community College prepares to close the curtains on the 2019 spring season, GCC Adjunct Professor Tara Pocock is finalizing the last details of the 20-piece modern dance showcase entitled, “Freedom: A Modern Dance Show About Your Rights.”

It will be performed on Friday, May 10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Stuart Steiner Theatre.

GCC History Club lecture: 'Winged Jewels of the Nile' about bird imagery in ancient Egypt

The Genesee Community College History Club is excited to invite the public to attend a lecture presented by Rozenn Bailleul-LeSuer, Ph.D., entitled “Winged Jewels of the Nile.” Rescheduled due to inclement weather in February, Bailleul-LeSuer has agreed to present on Wednesday, May 1st.

Genesee Chorale celebrates the songs of Andrew Lloyd Webber in concert at Northgate church's South Campus

The Genesee Chorale offers up a musical celebration not to be missed at 4 p.m. Sunday, May 19, at Northgate Free Methodist Church -- South Campus.

"Andrew Lloyd Webber: A Musical Celebration" will feature songs from the serious (“Pie Jesu” from "Requiem") to the silly (“Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats” from "Cats"). Add some "Phantom of the Opera," "Love Never Dies" and "Evita," and your entertainment is guaranteed.

The program also includes solo and small group performances of other Webber favorites.

Richmond library: Associate professor at College at Brockport talks about 'The Myths of the Salem Witch Hunt'

"The Myths of the Salem Witch Hunt" is the title of a presentation by Paul Moyer, Ph.D., of the College at Brockport, that will be given at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 30, at Richmond Memorial Library.

Join us in the Reading Room as Moyer discusses several myths that have worked their way into the story of the Salem Witch Hunt of 1692. This is a free presentation.

Richmond library: Trio of Eastman School of Music grad students perform concert with classical guitars and a Chinese pipa

Two classical guitars and a Chinese pipa music concert will be performed for free at Richmond Memorial Library at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 2.

Join us in the Reading Room as Eastman School of Music graduate students, Thomas Torrisi and Ken Luk, are joined by Chinese pipa player, Leah Ou, for an evening of music.

Inaugural Musicians Of Note Awards at BHS

Four alumni, one retired teacher, and one posthumous Batavia teacher will receive the Batavia City School District's first Musicians Of Note Award on Tuesday, May 14, at Batavia High School.

The alumni to be honored are: Robert Sullivan, Class of 1950, George Whittier, Class of 1951, Derek Reiss, Class of 1971, and Joey Pero, Class of 1999.

GC Youth Bureau hosts Family Game Night at County Building 2

The Genesee County Youth Bureau will host the 16th annual Family Game Night in celebration of National County Government Month.

The event will take place on Thursday, April 25th from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at County Building 2, 3837 W. Main Street Road, Batavia.

The night will consist of interactive booths for families to learn more about the services provided by the county through the departments as well as prizes and activities. The cost is $5 for a family of four and $3 for an individual which includes a light dinner and beverages.

Casablanca Casino Night at Terry Hills to benefit GC CASA for abused and neglected children

The seventh annuall Casablanca Casino Night Fundraiser benefitting Genesee County CASA for Children will be held Friday, May 31, at Terry Hills Banquet Facility in Batavia.

All proceeds benefit absued and neglected children in Genesee County who are served by CASA -- Court Appointed Special Advocates.

GC Young Democrats hosting nonpartisan Earth Day Cleanup

The Genesee County Young Democrats are hosting a nonpartisan event in the spirit of Earth Day on Friday, April 26, and all are welcome.

They will gather to pick up the garbage along the grassy area by the Thruway: "Let’s cleanup the earth and help Batavia look good." Come and help clean up what the snowbanks left behind. Every little bit helps and it feels good to be helpful.

Meet at the grassy area near the Target parking lot on Veterans Memorial Drive. Time is 4 p.m. to sundown. Get community service hours.

What is a GMO? And perhaps more importantly, should you be worried about them? GMOs, or genetically modified organisms have found their way into most of the foods we consume -- from plants and vegetables to animal products such as meat, milk, honey and seafood. So, where can you as a consumer, farmer, gardener or everyday citizen, get information and learn about the variety of perspectives on GMOs?

Afternoon teatime at St. James Episcopal Church, with special treats and basket raffles

Afternoon teatime is returning to St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia on Sunday, April 28, at 3 o’clock. This special event will include musical entertainment and raffles.

Fish fries are over, but the bakers are now working to bring you a delicious tea experience. A variety of gift baskets have been assembled.

“Rumor has it that Maureen Scoville is planning something special for the raffle, so you know it is not to be missed,” said Dorian Ely, one of the event organizers.

'Community for Understanding' monthly discussion at St. Mark's in Le Roy -- topic is 'Overcoming Hate'

St. Mark’s Episcopal Church’s monthly discussion series called “Community for Understanding” will meet at the church, 1 E. Main St., Le Roy, on Thursday, May 9, at 7 p.m. to discuss the theme of “Overcoming Hate.”

We will watch a short TED talk and a news clip to start the discussion. All are welcome to these monthly conversations on current concerns, and meetings emphasize civility in discourse with faith considered in its broadest sense.

'Spring Fever Fundraiser Event' at Willow Bend Inn, Batavia, to support GC shelter animals

Volunteers For Animals will host a "Spring Fever Fundraiser Event" from 1 to 6 p.m., Sunday, April 28, at the Willow Bend Inn, located at 3489 W. Main Street Road in Batavia.

A $10 entry fee to the fundraiser for animals at the Genesee County Animal Shelter includes a hamburger or hot dog.

There will be 50/50 raffles and a Chinese auction.

Classic rock music will be provided by FOMR.

Is there a better way to spend a Sunday? C'mon out and have some fun to support an awesome cause!

Seminar at Alexander Fire Rec Hall to learn how to help people with autism (earn two CME credits)

An autism seminar to learn how to help people with autism will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4, at Alexander Fire Department's Recreation Hall.

First responders attending will receive two hours of CME Credits.

Sandwiches and cookies will be available for sale.

The seminar is organized by Katie Green and Angelina Luker for the Girl Scouts' Silver Award, the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can achieve.

Advance registration is preferred, but not required.
