POSTPONED: Batavia Lions Club sponsors Girls Fastpitch Softball tournament

UPDATE May 25: Due to rain, the Batavia Girls Fastpitch Softball Tournament has been postponed today. It will be held Sunday, May 26. The championship game will be at Lions Park at 4:15 p.m. Earlier games will be at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on the fields at John Kennedy School, Batavia Middle School and Lions Park.

The Batavia Girls Fastpitch Softball organization, with sponsorship from the Batavia Lions Club, is hosting a 12U six-team Memorial Day Weekend Tournament this Saturday, May 25.

On Thursday, June 13th, at 6 p.m., we will be showing the movie is “On the Basis of Sex." Ruth Bader Ginsburg is a struggling attorney and new mother who faces adversity and numerous obstacles in her fight for equal rights. When Ruth takes on a groundbreaking tax case with her husband, attorney Martin Ginsburg, she knows it could change the direction of her career and the way the courts view gender discrimination.

State DOT public hearing in Alabama on proposed roundabout at Route 77 and Ledge Road

The New York State Department of Transportation announced today it will host a public hearing next week for the proposed intersection improvements at Route 77 and Ledge Road in the Town of Alabama, which include the installation of a modern roundabout and other safety enhancements.

The hearing is set to take place at the Alabama Fire Hall, located at 2230 Judge Road in Oakfield, at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 29.

Stafford Historical Society meeting with GC Soil and Water manager speaking on 'the Geology of Prime Farmland in Genesee County'

Scrap metal collection event at animal shelter

Scrap for the Pack is set for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, June 1 and 2, at the shelter. It is a scrap metal collection event in the shelter parking lot, located 3841 W. Main Street Road in Batavia.

Bring your metal items that The Volunteers For Animals will recycle for cash at Ed Arnold EAS Scrap Processors of Corfu. These include: railings, doors, garbage cans, file cabinets, bicycle frames, gutters, pipes, poles, fencing, window frames, lawn furniture, tools, shelving, washing machines, dryers, stoves, wheel barrows, wagons, etc.

County holds public meeting at Old Courthouse on Jail Construction Project

Genesee County will hold a Public Information Session regarding the Jail Construction Project at 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 16, at the Old County Courthouse Chambers, 7 Main St., Batavia.

The session will last until approximately 8 p.m. and the public is encouraged to drop by at any time to chat with County and SMRT representatives.

The purpose of the informational session is to allow for citizen questions and inquiries early on in the jail design process, and to provide County justification and rationale for the steps taken to date and planned into the future.

GC Libertarian Party meets at T.F. Brown's

Just a reminder the Genesee County Libertarian Party will have their monthly meeting at T.F. Brown's restaurant on East Main Street in Downtown Batavia on May 7 at 6:30 p.m.
 
Items to be discussed will be LPNY convention which was held this past weekend in Rochester. Mark Glogowski was elected new state chair.

Talk at Richmond library: 'Space Frontier at 50: From Apollo to 21st Century Private Space Travel'

A talk on the “Space Frontier at 50: From Apollo to 21st Century Private Space Travel" will be presented at Richmond Memorial Library on Thursday, June 6.

It begins at 7 p.m. and will take place in the Reading Room.

James Spiller, Ph.D., of the College at Brockport will sweep through 50+ years of human space travel coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landings in July.

Eighth- to 11th-graders invited to learn about Youth Court at Law Day celebration at Old Courthouse

Calling all eighth- to 11th-graders in Genesee County and any other individuals interested in Youth Court! On May 7, Genesee County Youth Court will be celebrating Law Day from 5:30-7 p.m. at the Old Courthouse (7 Main St., Batavia) to show the community how our court operates.

Applications and brochures will be available along with program staff to answer questions for anyone who is interested in joining.

Youth Court is a voluntary alternative for young people who face disciplinary action through school or law enforcement.
