Four county departments, along with ESU and hazmat team called to scene of fatal tanker fire in Barre

Genesee County volunteer firefighters were called to the scene early this morning of a tanker truck fire that claimed the life of the truck's driver in Barre, Orleans County.

The tanker was carrying ethanol and the fire reportedly spread quickly into the wooded area around the accident.

To fight an ethanol fire, fire fighters must use foam, so Genesee County units that have foam cabability were called to the scene.

Units responded from Town of Batavia, Elba, Byron and Oakfield, along with Genesee County Emergency Services Unit and the county's hazmat team.

The fire is now out and clean up work along is in progress.  

One Elba tanker along with the hazmat team and ESU remains on scene at this time. Emergency Coordinator Tim Yaeger said the remaining Genesee County personnel wlll be on scene yet for quite some time.

Speed believed to be a factor in serious roll-over accident in Byron

A 23-year-old Byron resident is in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital after being involved in a rollover accident on Freeman Road at 4:05 p.m.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the accident, the Sheriff's Office reports.

Injured was Amber D. Thorman, who had to be extricated from the vehicle. She was airlifted to Strong by Mercy Flight.

Her 1999 Chevy Tahoe was eastbound on Freeman when the SUV went off the north shoulder and struck a tree. The Tahoe then struck the guide wire of a utility pole, causing the vehicle to over turn three times before coming to rest on its roof.

Thorman was wearing a seat belt. 

Byron and South Byron fire departments responded to the scene and handled the extrication. Mercy EMS also assisted at the scene. 

The accident investigation is being handled by Deputy Joseph Graff, Sgt. Greg Walker and Investigator Kristopher Kautz.

Motor-vehicle accident on Maple Street, Elba

A motor-vehicle accident was reported at 44 Maple St. in Elba about 45 minutes ago. The victim suffered a head injury.

Elba Fire Department and Mercy EMS responded.

Mercy Flight was sent in and is now airborne.

Truck rolls over, hits tree, lands on roof in South Byron

A pickup has rolled over and crashed into a tree at 6478 Freeman Road in South Byron. It landed on its roof.

Byron and South Byron fire departments are responding along with Mercy EMS.

Bergen fire's rescue equipment is called to the scene.

The location is between Ivison Road and Route 237.

UPDATE 4:22 p.m.: The availability of Mercy Flight is requested.

UPDATE 4:24 p.m.: A landing zone is set up and Mercy Flight out of Batavia is called to the scene. The driver has been extricated. Bergen is told to stand down.

UPDATE 4:36 p.m.: Mercy Flight landed several minutes ago. National Grid is called because a pole with a transformer was hit during the accident, tilting it at a 45-degree angle.

UPDATE 4:56 p.m.: Mercy Flight is airborne with the victim and headed to Strong Memorial Hospital. National Grid is expected at the crash site shortly.

Car veers off Thruway into the woods

A car traveled off the eastbound Thruway and into the woods. Severity of injuries is unknown. The location is mile marker 394.8.

East Pembroke Fire Department and Mercy EMS are dispatched. State Police are on scene.

UPDATE 2:08 p.m.: A head injury is reported.

One-vehicle rollover on Oatka Trail

A one-vehicle rollover accident is reported at 8364 Oatka Trail. The victim is still trapped inside.

Le Roy Fire and Ambulance are dispatched.

UPDATE 7:50 p.m. (by Howard). The vehicle "has uprighted itself" and left the scene. A first responder said, "I just passed it. It's all over the road." The vehicle was last seen on Circular Hill Road headed toward Route 5. The vehicle is a black and white Chevy S10 with three occupants. Le Roy unit responding to the scene of the original accident to deal with a small fuel spill. The other truck responding is back in service.

UPDATE 7:59 p.m. (by Howard): Le Roy fire back in service.

Raceway accident in Perry prompts local emergency response

An accident at Wyoming County International Speedway Pavilion Motocross Park in Perry Covington has Mercy Flight out of Batavia flying north of the racetrack and Pavilion Fire Department setting up a landing zone there.

A 36-year-old man has suffered bumps and bruises to his chest and has been unconscious for 10 minutes.

The location is Taylor and Perry roads.

Driver involved in one-car accident in Corfu reportedly fell asleep

Fatigue is the apparent cause of an accident in the Village of Corfu overnight when a driver reportedly fell asleep and struck a utility pole in the area of 37 Main St.

Randel J. Seweryniak, of 9635 Colby Road, Corfu, suffered a minor injury in the accident and was transported to UMMC.

Seweryniak was driving a 2001 Dodge pickup truck when the truck struck a National Grid pole at 12:04 a.m.

Two mailboxes were also damaged.

No citations were issued.

The accident was investigated by Sgt. Brian Frieday.

DWI alleged in one-car accident on Sweetland Road

A driver involved in a one-car accident on Sweetland Road, Stafford has been charged with DWI.

Ricky O. Cooper, Jr., 34, of 9344 Warsaw Road, Le Roy, suffered facial cuts and was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital after his 1992 Chevy pickup truck struck a utility pole in the area 6208 Sweetland Road.

Cooper said he was attempting to avoid a deer that had entered the road near a curve when he struck the pole.

The accident was investigated by Deputy Joseph Graff and Deputy Matt Butler.

Car strikes pole in Village of Corfu, road blocked

A car has struck a pole at 39 East Main St. in the Village of Corfu. Wires are down and responders are told to use caution on approach.

Corfu Fire Department and Mercy medics are called.

A responder says a pole with transformer is down, completely blocking the roadway. A tow truck is called. Fire police are called. The intersection will be shut down.

UPDATE 12:15 a.m.: National Grid has been advised, no ETA given. The patient is conscious, out of the vehicle and speaking with a medic now.

UPDATE 12:52 a.m.: National Grid is on scene. The male driver has been taken to UMMC.

Car strikes pole on Sweetland Road, Stafford

A vehicle has struck a pole in front of 6184 Sweetland Road. There are believed to be injuries. The location is just east of Transit Road.

Stafford Fire Department and Mercy medics responding.

The pole snapped in two, the transformer is in the roadway. The driver may have left the scene and is bleeding from the face.

UPDATE 10:41 p.m.: The driver is still at the scene and is bleeding from the face. A Sheriff's deputy on scene says there are wires down all over the place.

UPDATE 10:50 p.m.: Additional manpower from Stafford is needed for traffic control at the accident scene. "This road will be closed for awhile." The pole is on top of a truck.

UPDATE 12:31 a.m.: Stafford units are back in service. The road is blocked off and National Grid will be on scene for awhile.

UPDATE 12:54 a.m.: The driver was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital at least a couple of hours ago.

Woman struck by car on Sumner Road, Darien

A young woman from Varysburg was struck by a car on Sumner Road early this morning and taken by Mercy Flight to ECMC, according to the Sheriff's Office.

According to a press release, 18-year-old Iesha Vetter is in stable condition at the hospital.

Vetter was on foot when she was hit by a car driven by Mitchell J. Irish, 29, of Rochester.

Irish was driving a 2008 Chevrolet Cobalt.

Vetter reportedly suffered internal injuries.

A cause of the accident has not been determined and it remains under investigation. 

The investigation is being conducted by Deputy Kevin McCarthy, Deputy Frank Bordonaro, Sgt. Greg Walker and Sgt. Brian Frieday. Assisting at the scene were the NY State Police, Darien Fire Department and Mercy EMS.

Girl hurt after riding bike into traffic in Bergen

A 12-year-old Bergen girl who apparently rode her bike into traffic Tuesday night suffered non-life threatening injuries, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Jaclyn J. Stone, of South Lake Street, Bergen, was riding her bike at about 8:30 p.m. when she rode onto South Lake just as a car was coming.

The driver of the car, Cai Xiang Huang, was unable to stop in time.

No citations were issued.

The Sheriff's Office report indicates Stone was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, but patient information at Strong doesn't show Stone being a patient at the hospital.

The Sheriff's Office report indicates Stone had a hip injury and was in shock following the accident.

Neither Huang or either passenger in his car were injured.

The accident was investigated by Deputy Timothy Wescott.

Covington boy in tractor rollover accident, Pavilion and Mercy respond

A 14-year-old boy was in a rollover tractor accident in Covington and the tractor is still on top of him. He's conscious.

He's behind a house at 7303 Morrow Road. "It's the house on top of the hill."

Mercy Flight is available. Pavilion Fire Department and Mercy medics are responding.

UPDATE 7:09 p.m.: Mercy Flight is called to the scene. The victim has been extricated.

UPDATE 7:19 p.m.: Mercy Flight is on the ground.

UPDATE 7:32 p.m.: Mercy Flight has left the ground. If a destination was mentioned, we didn't hear it.

Car goes into Covington ravine, Pavilion fire and Mercy EMS respond

Pavilion Fire Department and Mercy EMS are responding to a call in Covington after a car overturned and landed in a ravine. A 17-year-old is complaining of back pain.

The injury is said to be minor. The location is Silver Lake and Old State roads.

Three-car accident in Darien

A three-car accident is reported at Broadway (Route 20) and Warner roads in Darien. Injuries are believed to be minor.

Pavilion, Le Roy fire responding to serious injury accident in Covington

Pavilion and Le Roy fire departments are responding to a serious injury accident on Old State Road in Covington.

Covington is part of the Pavilion Fire District.

There are two victims, and adult and a child. At least one victim was entrapped.

One Mercy Flight helicopter is in route.

Possible serious accident on Thruway

There is an accident reported on the Thruway in the area of mile marker 404 with a possible ejection and possible car fire.

Pembroke and Indian Falls fire departments dispatched.

Mercy EMS dispatched.

UPDATE 8:21 a.m.: Dispatch sorting out reports. Multiple calls. It's possible it was a car fire with a female occupant jumping out of the car. There is at least one report that she is walking and conscious and alert. Mercy Flight on ground stand by.

UPDATE 8:23 a.m.: There is a car fire and a person with a leg injury, according to dispatch. First responder, while driving up, noticed no smoke or fire. One person is sitting, talking to people.

UPDATE 8:31 a.m.: Woman jumped out of vehicle while smoke was coming from it and suffered a leg injury. Mercy Flight cancelled.

Accident with injuries reported on Lewiston Road near Thruway bridge

A car accident with injuries has been reported on Lewiston Road near the Thruway bridge.

A pole has been hit and wires are down.

Town of Batavia Fire and Mercy EMS responding.

UPDATE 8:10 a.m.: Oakfield fire police requested to Batavia Oakfield Townline Road to shut down traffic. Northbound traffic is also closed and a trooper will close traffic at Route 63 and Galloway Road.
