Batavia/Elba - Dorothy M. Coughlin, 92, of Batavia/Elba, passed away on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at Highland Hospital in Rochester.

Dorothy was born October 4, 1926, in Batavia, a daughter of the late George H. and Mildred (Shuler) Coughlin.

A teacher of English, drama, speech and reading at Elba Central School for 35 years, she did gladly teach, taking pride in her students' accomplishments both in and out of school.  Her tenure covered three generations in some families. 

An honor graduate of D'Youville College with a Bachelor of Arts Degree, she received subsequent Masters Degrees from Canisius College and Buffalo State Teachers' College.  She pursued training in reading programs from the University of Chicago and Brockport State Teachers' College.

Dorothy retired as head of the English Department of Elba Central School with specialization in reading improvement.  She then became the first staff development coordinator for Genesee-Wyoming BOCES for two years organizing programs for professional staff training in the school districts.  Then followed a dozen years as part time reference librarian at Genesee Community College and five years as reference librarian at Richmond Memorial Library.  During this time, she became an active volunteer at St. Joseph's Church, RSVP, The Office of the Aging, Hospice and the Muriel H. Marshall Fund.  Her hobbies included gardening, reading, visiting the ill and travel.  Her travels included a trip to the Holy Land, Egypt, North Africa, Europe, Alaska, Hawaii and most of the mainland states.

Survivors include her nieces and nephews, Edward (Sue) Farrell of Troy, Kathleen (Steve Christo) Farrell of Virginia, Rosemary (Rick) Garde of Long Island, John (Lisa) Farrell of Highland, Barbara (Kevin) Farrell-Gallagher of Rochester, Ann Marie (Sal) Pulice of Long Island, Peter (Misa) Farrell of Maryland, Daniel (Elizabeth) Farrell of Buffalo and Suzanne Farrell of Rochester, great-nieces and great-nephews,  Dmetria (Casey) Valadie, Ivan Christo, Connor Farrell, Liam Farrell, Isabel Farrell, Matthew Farrell, Bret Garde and Blaine Garde.  

She was predeceased by her sisters, Barbara Ann Coughlin and Catherine Marie Coughlin Farrell, brother-in-law, Edward J. Farrell and a nephew Joseph Farrell. 

Calling hours are Monday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 403 East Main Street, Batavia. Dorothy's Mass of Christian Burial will held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday at the Resurrection Parish, St. Joseph's Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia.  Dorothy will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Batavia.

Betty I. Butler, 82 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Saturday (February 16, 2019) at The Grand Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at Batavia.

She was born July 2, 1936 in Carlton, NY, a daughter of the late Clyde and Jennie Draper.

Betty was employed by the former Duffy-Motts Co. prior to her retirement. She enjoyed to shop and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was predeceased by her husbands, Edward Larnder and Merle Butler; son, James (Nancy) Larnder and several brothers and sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Mary (late Robert) Tullar of Byron. Son, Harold (Colleen) Larnder of Holley. Sister, Louise Little of Medina. Also survived by 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild, nieces and nephews.

Private services will be held at the convenience of the family with interment in Greenwood Cemetery, Kendall, NY.

Shirley Mast, 88, of Attica, NY, passed away on February 20, 2019. She was born on August 3, 1930 in Clarence, NY to the late Perry and the late Eva (Mc Ginness) Kaufman. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah (the late David) Gangler, her son, Douglas (Sherry) Mast, her granddaughter, Claudia Mohr Klein, and her siblings, Norman Kaufman, Nelson (Barbara) Kaufman, and George (Rita) Kaufman, and Zelma (Clarence) Mast.

Shirley was a great cook and she loved gardening and her plants.

Shirley is survived by her children, Sharon (the late Gerald) Keene, Daniel (Carol) Mast, Darlene (the late Thomas) Westermeier, Ronald (Eileen) Mast, Marie Mast, Thomas Mast, and D. Scott (Erin) Mast; her siblings, Grace (Howard) Brucker, Virginia (Thomas) Lee, Barbara (Samuel) Pierce, Joseph (Melody) Kaufman; 13 grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.

Bergen - Betty Lou Canfield Biggins age 86, of Bergen, formerly of Attica, passed away on Wednesday, February 20, 2019 at Absolute Care of East Aurora under the loving care of Hospice.

Mrs. Biggins was born February 12, 1933 in Bolivar, a daughter of the late Glenn and Margaret Cossaboon Canfield.

A longtime resident of Attica, prior to moving to Bergen, she was an active member of the  Attica Presbyterian Church participating in church functions. She was devoted to her family, enjoyed gardening and activities at Hidden Meadows. A retiree of Eastman Kodak in Rochester, Mrs. Biggins formerly worked at GTE Sylvania in Batavia.

She is predeceased by her husband, Charles J. Biggins, Jr., on December 16, 2011.  They were married for over 60 years.

She is survived by her five children, Charles J. Biggins, III, of Texas, Michael William Biggins of East Aurora, Diane M. Korcz of East Aurora, James J. Biggins of Missouri and Kenneth P. (Kathleen) Biggins of Canandaigua, a brother, Douglas (Ruth) Canfield of Jamestown; a sister, Carolyn Bailey of Olean; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. 

She was the mother-in-law of the late Patricia Biggins and sister of the late Francis Canfield, David Canfield, Helen Graves and Dorothy Marinari.  

Friends may call from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday at the H.E. Turner & Co. Funeral Home, 51 S. Lake St., Bergen, where services will immediately follow visitation at 3 p.m. Her nephew, Robert Howard will officiate. Barbara A. Emerson, 82 of Byron, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Tuesday, February 19, 2019. She was born on December 10, 1936 in Coalport, PA to the late Samuel (Helen Rhoades) Foreman. She is preceded in death by a son William G. Emerson Jr; along with several brothers and sisters.  

Mrs. Emerson was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Byron. She loved going to thrift stores and doing puzzles.

She is survived by her beloved husband William G. Emerson; children Dale Emerson and Linda Grimes all of Byron; sister Iris (Clyde) Wells of OH; 4 grandchildren Michael, Greg, Jessica and Sara; 5 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

Batavia - Florence I. Miller, 84, of Batavia, passed away Tuesday, February 19, 2019, in Bergen.

Florence was born May 21, 1934, in Batavia, a daughter of the late George T. Miller and Roselin Walbridge Miller.

Known to many as "Grandma Flo", she enjoyed playing Bingo, cards and working word search books. She was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered as being feisty, yet very caring. She always made sure her opinion on a matter was heard. An employee at SUNY Brockport for over 10 years, she also worked at the Batavia Nursing home.

Surviving are her daughter, Darlene (late Ken) Hazlett of Byron; two grandchildren, Matthew Johnson of Byron and Sarah (Michael) Keech of Roanoke, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Aria Gayton, Kyleigh and Raelynn Keech; her brother, Edward (Late Lee) Walbridge of Stafford; her sister, Imogene (Late Howard) Bane of Bergen and several nieces and nephews. 

She is predeceased by her brother, Robert Miler and her sister, Betty Hadelton.  

There will be no prior visitation. Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Churchville ~ Gina M. Fry Pangrazio, age 67, passed away early Monday morning, Feb. 18, 2019 at Strong Memorial Hospital in the loving presence of her family.

    

She was born October 14, 1951 in Dublin, Ireland, a daughter of the late William and Muriel Allen Fry.

     Gina will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister, who enjoyed camping, working in her flower gardens and decorating.  She especially loved spending time with her canine companion, Zoey.

     She is survived by her devoted husband of 30 years, John E. Pangrazio; her daughter, Jennifer (Oliver) Bell; her son, Justin Chabot; and 3 grandchildren, Emily, Evan and Megan, all of Ottawa, Canada; her siblings, Diana (Bob) Vaux, John (Beverly) Fry, David (Karen) Fry and Robert (Kirsti) Fry all of Toronto, Canada, along with her niece and nephews, Ryan, David, Christopher, Matthew, Katherine and William.

MARIA VIDA (MANGULABNAN) DiSALVO ~ Age 80, of Batavia, Vida was born April 8, 1938 in Alasas, San Fernando, Pampanga, Philippines to Silverio and Marciana (Lagman) Mangulabnan, died peacefully Sunday afternoon February 17, 2019 at Premier Genesee Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation with her family by her side. Along with her parents Vida was predeceased by her siblings, Ricardo Mangulabnan, Raquel Pineda and Esperanza Bernardo.

Vida was an amazing woman, she did so much for everyone in her life, for her family and friends and anyone lucky enough to cross paths with her. Vida loved to help others and this quality was instilled in her at a young age by living with family members to help take care of their children. Many years later, Vida spent much time visiting with elderly neighbors, friends and her in-laws, with a smile, kind word, she gave love unconditionally with her caring spirit and generous heart. She was an amazing cook and often experimented with different cuisines, she frequently would cook enough dinner to share with others and if you were one of those lucky ones you undoubtedly tasted a piece of heaven.

Vida loved to sew, knit, crochet and for 50 years was a dress maker, she designed and created spectacular wedding gowns, bridesmaid, prom gowns and one of a kind outfits. She loved to garden and enjoyed sharing her “Garden of Eden” with others. Every plant was meticulously placed to create her masterpiece often used for wedding and school pictures.

Vida loved music, dancing, singing and was an avid bowler, for over 30 years you would see her at Mancuso Lanes actively involved with the Women’s Housewife League and Koffee Klutch. She enjoyed organizing the banquets and once was just a few pins shy of the perfect 300 game! Vida and Sam dancing together often caught the attention of those around at Jackson Square, 4^th of July picnics, Batavia Downs and dance parties in Buffalo.

Vida loved the Lord and her church, being a member of St. Anthony’s and Ascension Parish for many years where she was very active. A passionate, meticulous woman who enjoyed life to the fullest and her gift of compassion and mercy never quit. In the last couple of years, the Vida everyone knew slowly began to fade away, but what stayed constant was her beautiful voice and gift of storytelling. In her final days, as the flame in her heart began to fade, she sang one final time, Happy Birthday to her love of 60 years, Sam.

Surviving is her husband, Samuel D. DiSalvo of Batavia; loving children, Erlinda (Mike) Suozzi of VA, Gary (Jamie) DiSalvo of Oakfield; beloved grandchildren, Michael V. Suozzi, Matthew (Jessicca) DiSalvo, Adam (Jessica) Suozzi, Christy (Daniel) Campbell, Kaeleigh, Nicole & Nathaniel DiSalvo; 5 great-grandchildren; siblings, Erlinda Santos and Juanito Mangulabnan of the Philippines along with many nieces, nephews and cousins.

The DiSalvo family will be present from 4-8pm on Friday February 22, 2019 at the MICHAEL S. TOMASZEWSKI FUNERAL & CREMATION CHAPEL, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where prayers will be recited 10:15am Saturday February 23 followed by her Mass of Christian Burial 11am at Ascension Parish (Sacred Heart), she will be entombed in the Fr. Edward J. Sutherland, 91 of Batavia, formerly of Oakfield passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. He was born on March 5, 1927 in Toledo, OH to the late Lloyd (Gladys Somers) Sutherland. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Constance A. (Zogaib) Sutherland, daughter Suzanne Levine and brother Martin Sutherland.  

Mr. Sutherland was a proud WWII United States Army Veteran. He taught Social Studies and  History at Oakfield Alabama for 32 years. Mr. Sutherland also served as Dean of Students, football and baseball coach in Oakfield. Mr. Sutherland spent many years refereeing football and ran the Oakfield summer recreation program. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and telling stories, both fact and fiction. Edward was honored as Veteran of the Month while he was at the NYS Veterans Home @ Batavia. He loved his family more than anything and will be missed dearly.

He is survived by his loving daughters Elaine Sutherland of Batavia; Colleen (Joseph) Head of Buffalo; Ann Sutherland of Batavia; Maria Sparaco of Milton; 3 grandchildren Kaitlin (Daniel) O’Keeffe, Richie and John Sparaco, along with several nieces and nephews.

Batavia, NY -- Joan Marie (Perkins) Rumble, 76, of Batavia, entered into Heaven on Friday, Feb. 15, 2019 at Unity Hospital in Rochester, NY.

Joan was born on Sept. 18, 1942 in Darien, NY, to the late Loren and Frances Perkins.

Joan loved to listen to old country, Elvis being her favorite, and Christian music as well. She loved to read, crochet, and do ceramics. Joan attended City Church in Batavia since 2002 and was a steady member in her seat that everyone knew. All who knew her knew that she was caring and spunky, too.

Joan was married to Dale D. Rumble on Sept. 27, 1958 until his passing on Jan. 11, 2014.

Joan is survived by her children, Dale (Gloria) Rumble, Barbara Snyder, Teresa (companion Hal Mitchel) Rumble, Randy (Diane) Rumble, Michelle (companion Randy Barclay) Wheatley. She has 15 grandchilden and 17 great-grandchilden who loved her. She is also survived by two sisters -- Joyce Rumble and Donna Reichle, a brother, Loren Perkins, and many nieces, nephews, and other friends and family who loved her.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2019 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the City Church Generation Center, located at 15 Center St. in Batavia.

Leaburn (Marrs) Wilcox passed away on February 16^th after a lengthy bout with lung cancer.  She was born on December 8, 1940 in Newhall, West Virginia to Dewey and Athlene Marrs.  Leaburn’s father was an underground coal miner who left West Virginia in the early 1950’s upon the advent of strip mining, something he felt was wrong because of its impact on nature, with a view to finding underground mining work in a place he could raise his family.  Dewey travelled to Oakfield, NY to mine gypsum for USG where he built a home for his family and lived until his death in 1987.  Leaburn was the eldest of five sisters, all of whom attended Oakfield Central School and raised families of their own in Western New York. 

Leaburn was married to Louis Assenato of Rochester, NY in 1962, father of four of Leaburn’s seven children, Michael, Mark, Mary and Paula Assenato.  Several years after divorcing her first husband, Leaburn married her second husband, John P. Wilcox of Batavia who had two sons from a previous marriage, John P. Wilcox Jr. and James D. Wilcox.  In 1973, Leaburn and John had a son, Shawn Wilcox who now resides with his family in Montana.

Leaburn was a committed Mother who made it her mission to provide the best life she could for her children; not an easy task on a single NYS Trooper’s Salary in the 1970’s.  John Wilcox retired from the NYS Police in 1977 after a high-speed pursuit and crash that shattered one of his legs.  John and Leaburn, or “Lea” as she was known to friends and family started a small locksmith business in 1978 called, Genesee Locksmiths. The Wilcoxes ran this business in several locations in Batavia until John passed away from cancer in 2006 and the business was closed.  Mrs. Wilcox lived in Batavia for the remainder of her life.

John and Leaburn were members of St. James Episcopal Church and were both actively involved in the Boy Scouts of America serving as Troop Master and Den Mother, respectively.  Her hobbies included fishing, cooking, baking and spending time with her family.

BATAVIA - John W. Anna, Sr., 84, of Batavia, passed away on Saturday, February 16, 2019, at Rochester General Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.

John was born January 29, 1935, in Utica, New York, the son of the late John W. and Ethel (Patterson) Anna.

John earned a Master’s Degree and several other degrees from several colleges and universities in New York State.  He was a New York State Trooper for 38 years retiring as a Senior Investigator in 1993.  He was the head of the Major Crimes Unit and the Bureau of Criminal Investigation as well as co-founder of the DWI Program at Genesee Community College.  He was the Chairman of the Stafford Republican Party and loved to be in the outdoors.  He was a hunter, fisherman and boater.  He enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Survivors include his wife, Margaret A. (Stockbridge) Anna, whom he married on December 29, 1960; three children, Kathleen Gonzalez of Batavia, John W. (Felicia) Anna, Jr. of Beltsville MD and Kimberly (Jeff) Worthington of Batavia; grandchildren, Rachael Heatherman, Curtis Heatherman, Shawn Harris, Jamie Harris, Cory Anna, Kara Anna, Zachary Ireland, Troy Ireland, Gabrielle Henderson, Ian Sanfratello and Kyla Sanfratello and several great-grandchildren.

ROGER A. MUEHLIG ~ of Batavia, age 73. Roger died peacefully Friday afternoon February 15, 2019 at Rochester General Hospital. Born in Buffalo, NY on October 1, 1945, a son of the late Louis and Mabel (Barker) Muehlig.

Mr. Muehlig served honorably with the US Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. Roger may be most remembered locally as a journalist for 42 years with the Batavia Daily News where he was well respected by his peers. A genuine, fair man who was very proud of being left-handed, was a life-long Chicago Cubs fan who finally saw them win the 2016 World Series for the first time. To his family he was a loving husband, devoted father, grandfather, caring son, brother and devoted friend to all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Donna (Scheuing) Muehlig of Batavia; children, Mitchell (Vanessa) Muehlig of Batavia, Brittany Walker of Webster, Drew (Erika) Muehlig of Elba; his grandchildren, Madison, Aiden, Caden, Kalen, Lily, Liam; brothers, Gary (Carol) Muehlig of Pavilion, Jack Muehlig of SC; sister-in-law, Sharon Cone of Wyoming along with several nieces and nephews.
