Edward J. Sutherland

Edward J. Sutherland, 91 of Batavia, formerly of Oakfield passed away on Tuesday, February 19, 2019 at United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia. He was born on March 5, 1927 in Toledo, OH to the late Lloyd (Gladys Somers) Sutherland. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife Constance A. (Zogaib) Sutherland, daughter Suzanne Levine and brother Martin Sutherland.  

Mr. Sutherland was a proud WWII United States Army Veteran. He taught Social Studies and  History at Oakfield Alabama for 32 years. Mr. Sutherland also served as Dean of Students, football and baseball coach in Oakfield. Mr. Sutherland spent many years refereeing football and ran the Oakfield summer recreation program. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles and telling stories, both fact and fiction. Edward was honored as Veteran of the Month while he was at the NYS Veterans Home @ Batavia. He loved his family more than anything and will be missed dearly.

He is survived by his loving daughters Elaine Sutherland of Batavia; Colleen (Joseph) Head of Buffalo; Ann Sutherland of Batavia; Maria Sparaco of Milton; 3 grandchildren Kaitlin (Daniel) O’Keeffe, Richie and John Sparaco, along with several nieces and nephews.  

Friends are invited to call on Thursday, February 21, 2019 from 2 to 8 PM at Gilmartin Funeral Home & Cremation Company, Inc. 329-333 West Main Street, Batavia, New York 14020. An 11:00 AM Funeral Service will be held on Friday, February 22, 2019 at the Funeral Home. Mr. Sutherland will be laid to rest in St. Cecilia’s Cemetery, Oakfield.
