The Le Roy volleyball team plays for a sectional championship this afternoon at home against #2 seed Bloomfield after beating Wellsville in the semifinal on Friday night.
Le Roy won 25-13, 25-17, 25-12 and enters the final undefeated on the season.

Le Roy's volleyball team celebrated Senior Night on Friday both with a congratulatory celebration for the class of 2021 but also with a three-set victory over Haverling, 25-24, 25-10, 25-22.
The Knights are 7-0 on the season with three regular-season matches to go.

Le Roy won its home opener in volleyball last night over Dansville in four sets, 25-19, 21-25, 25-20 & 25-10.
Allie Ingles had 12 kills. Abbie Woodworth had 23 assists and Hailey Johnson had 15. Riley Wood led with 12 digs.
The Knights are now 3-0 on the season.

Lukas Milligan, of Pavilion, was one of six Elmira College student-athletes recognized by the Empire 8 Conference.
Milligan (Class of '23), a volleyball player in Elmira's impressive rookie class, was selected to the Empire 8 All-Conference Second Team.
Milligan floored 125 kills with a 2.12 kills-per-set average, which was good for ninth in the conference. The Pavilion native and Pavilion High School graduate was deadly from the service line with a team-best 21 aces and set a single-match record with nine against Sage. On the other side of the ball, Milligan added a team-high 87 digs.

The Pembroke Girls Volleyball Team won their first-round playoff game Wednesday, beating Letchworth 3 sets to 1.
The win sends the Lady Dragons to a quarterfinals match against Bloomfield at Bloomfield at 6 p.m., Saturday.
Pembroke took the first two sets against Letchworth 25-21 each, dropped the third set 25-17, and won the forth and match 25-19.
Dekari Moss had 14 kills and seven digs; Oliva Mets, 17 assists; and Allie Schwerthaffer and Trinity Humel each had seven digs.

Bergen -- One Saturday morning each September, the Byron-Bergen Girls Varsity and JV Volleyball teams meet in the Bergen Evangelical Presbyterian Church parking lot at 9 a.m. There, they join other members of the community to wash, scrub, dry, sort, pack and load approximately 2,000 pounds of potatoes.
While many teams engage in community service fundraising, or awareness-raising, the “potato scrub” requires the team to get their hands dirty -- literally. The annual community service project began three years ago when Hannah Catalino, a then sophomore, approached her volleyball coach with an idea for an unusual community service project.
“There are a lot of ways athletic teams can be charitable and this one is not glamourous,” said Byron-Bergen Athletic Director Rich Hannan. “Every year these players tackle this project with good will and good humor and no fanfare. I am extremely proud of them.”
The "potato gleaning,"(correct, with a g) as it is officially called, is orchestrated by Stewart Freeman. He has worked with area farmers for the last decade to collect extra and post-harvest crops including potatoes, butternut squash, onions and cabbage. He stores the produce and makes deliveries to shelters, food pantries and local families.
“What we’re doing is helping people who can’t afford to buy food get the chance to eat,” said senior VarsityVolleyball player Cynthia Morse. “That makes me feel happy.”
The “scrub,” which the volleyball players take part in, is crucial to this process because as the soil is scrubbed from the potatoes, spoiled spuds are identified and sorted out. If bad potatoes are packed with good ones, they will contaminate the entire box, making the food inedible.
“We all participate, both Varsity and JV players,” Catalino said. “It’s a team bonding activity. We work together and get to know each other better while helping the community.”
Eventually, Freeman will deliver the potatoes that the volleyball players helped prepare to local soup kitchens and food pantries, including the Open Door Mission in Rochester, the Batavia Salvation Army, and local organizations that deliver food to veterans and community members in need.

Pavilion/York beat North Rose Wolcott 3 sets to 1 in boys volleyball on Saturday. The team then lost to Midlakes three sets to zero.
Pavilion/York is now 10-6 on the season.
Cameron Milligan sets single match & single-season records for the program against NRW with his 43 kills tallying 374 for the season. Both records were previously held by his cousin Luke Milligan. Luke continues to hold the career kills record with 1,313. Cameron added 18 kills against Midlakes to set his career mark at 796 and counting.

The Pavilion boys volley team picked up two victories yesterday, first over Keshequa and then over Eastridge.
In game one, Pavilion won in three sets, 25-10, 25-12, and 25-16.
In game two, Pavilion/York beat Eastridge 3 sets to 1, 26-24, 25-14, 27-29, 25-15.

The Pembroke Dragons placed second in the Warsaw Volley Tournament over the weekend.
The Dragons beat Alexander in the semifinals but fell to Warsaw in the finals in three games. Dekari Moss and Olivia Metz were named to the tournament all-star team.
In girls volleyball Monday night, the Pavilion Gophers defeated the Dansville Mustangs in five sets.
The scores were 25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 14-25, 25-9.
Lauren Kingsley had 16 kills and 3 blocks. Shannon Campbell had 27 assists, Addy Milligan had 11 kills and 12 digs. In the fifth set, Paige Landers had 13 straight service points including three aces.

The Byron-Bergen Senior High School proudly announces that every fall varsity Byron-Bergen sport team achieved the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) Scholar-Athlete Team award.
The fall sports teams are cheerleading, boys cross-country, girls cross-country, football, gymnastics, boys soccer, girls soccer and girls volleyball.
“Here at Byron-Bergen we are always proud of our student athletes and their accomplishments,” said Byron-Bergen Athletic Director Rich Hannan. “This fall we are especially proud that all of our fall teams made the NYS Scholar-Athlete Team award.
"As Athletic Director, I am extremely blessed to work with such great student athletes and coaches. This particular recognition is a great testament to the student athletes and what it takes to perform at a high level. In and out of the classroom, our kids are getting it done!”
The Scholar-Athlete program recognizes athletes for their academic success. NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team awards go to teams whose average GPA of 75 percent of the athletic team equals 90 or above.

So it's no surprise that Leach has been named Football Player of the Year for All-Greater Rochester by the Democrat & Chronicle.
Brennan Briggs, who coached his fourth team in the past five years to a Section V championship. This season was the first time a Briggs-coached team reached the state championship game.
Also making first team: Joshua Barber and Ethan Biscaro. Taiyo Iburi-Bethel was named to the second team. Alex Rood, Joe Martinucci and Andrew Francis all received honorable mention.

The Alexander Volleyball Booster Club is hosting its seventh annual fundraising game on Wednesday, Oct. 10, when the Lady Trojans take on the Oakfield-Alabama/Elba Hornets.
The fun begins at 5 p.m. with the JV game, followed by the Varsity game at 6:30 p.m. Alexander Central School is located at 3314 Buffalo St. in Alexander.
The event features theme baskets, a pizza and bake sale and a serving contest for a chance to win prizes donated by area businesses and volleyball families.
Fundraiser co-chairs Colette Yax and Laura Marzolf announce the charity selected to receive proceeds from the 2018 event is the Breast Cancer Network of Western New York.
“This is an organization that supports, educates and advocates for people with breast cancer and breast cancer survivors,” Marzolf said.
“A breast cancer diagnosis is devastating for an individual and their loved ones,” Yax said. “We are happy to support an organization committed to helping people through this difficult time.”
In addition to the theme baskets and serving contests, co-chair Marzolf said a special prize is being raffled off at the event.
“We have a Sabres ticket package for two 200–level seats, including a parking pass for the October 30th game against the Calgary Flames,” Marzoff said.

UTICA -- Allison DellaPenna, of Batavia, a junior on the Utica College volleyball team, was named to the Sportswoman of the Year squad, it was announced Tuesday.
The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. One member of each team is selected for displaying these traits as well as having the characteristics that make a good sportswoman.
DellaPenna totaled 65 kills and she also finished second on the team with 41 blocks in 30 matches played this season. In three years with the Pioneers, she has recorded 92 kills and 52 blocks.
Pavilion's boys volleyball team is off to a strong start in sectional play with two wins and a Class B semifinal match against Spencerport at 2 p.m., tomorrow.
Yesterday the Gophers beat Canandaigua three matches to two.

The Genesee Community College volleyball team swept visiting Niagara County Community College 3-0 Oct. 10 by scores of 25-22, 25-23 and 25-18, respectively.
As has been the case most of this season, Genesee appeared to get more dominant once the match got underway, as was the case against the Thunderwolves.
In the first set trailing 20-19, the Cougars recorded six of the last eight points to take the set 25-22, including the final four points behind the service points of Tommi Rutherford.
The second set almost provided an identical scenario that had the Cougars trailing by that same 20-19 score before the team rattled off six of the last nine points for the 25-23 win. Again it was Rutherford capturing four of the team's last five points with her serve.
In the third set, Genesee got its second double-digit lead at 15-5 before cruising to a 25-18 win. Audriana Reeves had the hot serving hand in helping the Cougars establish an early 9-1 lead.
Reeves led all Cougars in aces with four, while Lyndsey Rowland had five blocks on the day. Sydney DeVay registered a team-high 13 digs and Sha-Ony Obispa had seven kills that included one to end the second match and prevent it from going to extra points.
Head coach Tricia Ziebarth used the match to get some more experience for some of her players and was pleased by what see saw, "We used today to put a couple of our freshmen in at different positions and they rose to the occasion.
The Cougars continue their home stand by hosting Finger Lakes Community College Oct. 12 at 6 p.m.
