By Howard B. Owens

While you may still be thinking about Halloween candy, the folks at Oliver's need to think decidedly further ahead -- like Christmas. Candy cane production started today. Here's a few photos of the process.

Photos: Friday morning in Centennial Park

By Howard B. Owens

Everything was nice and frosty this morning. It could have made some good photos if I'd gotten out of the house sooner.

I did head up to Centennial Park just before 9 a.m. hoping for some frost still on the ground and leaves. There wasn't but I took a few pictures anyway. It was still a beautiful morning, and just enough fall left to provide some color.

The bottom photo, however, is some of the frost I found outside in our own front yard.

Apparently, an aurora borealis was visible in Genesee County, at least in Elba, on Monday night. Fran Woodworth submitted this photo.

Photos: Getting ready for Halloween on Watson Avenue

By Howard B. Owens

Thelma and Rick Hall are getting their annual Halloween Haunt on Watson Avenue ready for the trick-or-treaters they're hoping will visit them Oct. 31. The Halls are expanding the haunt again this year. It will wrap all around their house and feature new displays and more frights.

Photo: A fall day at the quarry on Golf Road, Le Roy

By Howard B. Owens

This spring, I drove by this old quarry on Golf Road in Le Roy for the first time. It was filled with green water that day and I thought, "I bet in the fall, that green water topped by autumn-colored trees looks pretty awesome." So this afternoon, driving back from Rochester, I thought of the quarry and the picture possibility. It was a bit of a let down to find the water evaporated over the summer. But with the dramatic storm clouds above, I still thought it could make a nice picture.

Photo: Tattered flag on Rose Road

By Howard B. Owens

When I left the office late this afternoon, the clouds and shafts of light cutting through them looked pretty awesome and I started thinking about what sort of picture I could make on limited time. I remembered a barn on Pearl Street Road that I've never gotten a good shot of and thought of the clouds and light behind it. So I drove out there, and I was right. It could have been a great photo. Unfortunately, the owners had parked a high lift right in front of it. That just wouldn't do. So I kept going and circled back to the city by way of Upton Road and Rose Road. On Rose, a potential advertiser called me, so I pulled over to chat -- with this flag right in front of me. "There's a possible picture," I thought.

Photos: Tuesday morning in Darien and Alexander

By Howard B. Owens

We enjoyed a beautiful fall morning today, so I thought I would take a little drive and wound up in Darien.

Above, I found this diving board over a pond next to a farm field to be a rather interesting sight.

The view from atop Simmonds Road.

A red barn in North Darien.

A small pond along Beaver Road, Alexander.

Photos: Fall in the Springvale Cemetery, Elba

By Howard B. Owens

This morning with some splinters of blue sky among the clouds, I thought I'd take a short drive and see if I could find any worthwhile fall pictures.

I wound up at the Springvale Cemetery on Edgerton Road in Elba.

While there, a reader called and mentioned there was a rollover accident on Ford Road, which wasn't far from where I was, so I headed to the accident and wound up with some spot news coverage and a barn photo.

By Howard B. Owens

For such a beautiful, unseasonably warm fall day, a holiday, it sure was quiet in Dewitt Park today.

Here's a pair of pictures I took on my way back from Elba yesterday morning. The top is on Norton Road near Route 262, Elba, and the bottom is on Bank Street Road, Batavia.

Photos: Sunflowers on Sumner Street

By Howard B. Owens

I happened down Sumner Street in the city this afternoon -- when the sun was still out -- and spotted a row of sunflowers in a resident's yard. My natural reaction, "let's take some pictures." Here's two of them.

As I was leaving Le Roy yesterday, I saw this crop-duster flying over a field off Route 5.
