Photo: Snow mountain behind the skate park

By Howard B. Owens

I went to the courthouse this afternoon to cover a case that, as it turned out, wasn't called, but I did spot this giant snow mountain behind the skate park. You really need to stand next to it to appreciate it, but here's a photo anyway.

There is still a flood watch in place for Genesee County, but eyeballing the Tonawanda Creek this afternoon, it didn't look too bad. Of course, if this pile melts off all at once ...

Photos: Blowing glass at Glass Roots

By Howard B. Owens

One of my longtime goals has been to stop by Glass Roots at 12 Center St., Batavia, some time when Jeremy Almeter is blowing glass. Today, I happened to catch Jeremy in action along with Josh Taggart (bottom photo).

Almeter told me he and Josh can create any kind of glass object a customer might want -- just draw a picture and they'll make it.

Photos: Today in Genesee County

Here's three photos from my travels around the county this afternoon. Top, Peaviner Road, Alexander.

An irrigation system on East Road, Batavia.

A barn/shed on Buckley Road, Stafford.

Photos: Loose geese on Britt Road

By Howard B. Owens

When I turned onto Britt Road (Le Roy), I spotted two women wading through knee-deep water in a field seemingly herding three geese.

It turns out that Sid, Sally and Sandy had escaped their pen and decided to go for a swim. Shannon Yauchzee and daughter Kari had to go into the cold, swampy field and round up the wayward fowl.

Photos: Amish loggers on South Main Road

By Howard B. Owens

George and Barb Galliford of Batavia own some property on the banks of the Tonawanda Creek along South Main Road and are planning a new house there. It will be a BOCES project starting in September, but the timber needs to be cleared from the land. This morning, two Amish men from Fillmore were harvesting the trees using their horse-drawn carriage to haul the logs up the bank to the side of the road. (Thanks to an alert reader for letting us know.)

Weather: Snow slows, floods wane

Both the winter weather advisory and the flood warning for Genesee County have been canceled by the National Weather Service.

Photos: Wednesday afternoon along Caswell and Byron roads

By Howard B. Owens

Yesterday a reader said she was hoping I would take some more pictures of the countryside of Genesee County again soon, and with a nice sky and a little time late yesterday afternoon, what more encouragement did I need?

I started out along Caswell Road near South Byron (the two pictures below) and then headed out to this cemetery (above) along Batavia-Byron Road, which I spied some time ago as a potentially good place for a sunset picture.

Weather: Overcast all day. There's an 80-percent chance of snow tonight, but no prediction of significant accumulation.

Weather: Storm warning cancelled

By Howard B. Owens

The storm that passed through Genesee County this morning has passed to the east and the National Weather Service has canceled the storm warning for our area.

Some light snow, with as much as an inch accumulation, is expected this evening and tonight.

The picture above was taken during some of the heaviest of the snowfall out on Prole Road, Stafford.

Photo: Sunset on Gabbey Road

By Howard B. Owens

Before all heck broke loose this evening, I was out in the western part of the county looking for a good sunset picture when I came across this scene.  Picture shot on Gabbey Road (just west of Route 77) in Pembroke/Indian Falls.

Photos: Le Roy schools and library

By Howard B. Owens

Tonight I went to the Le Roy Central School District board meeting to see if anything interesting happened. Nothing did, but as I was leaving, I saw this wonderfully shaped tree with the great mural in the well-lit hallway in background and thought it should make a good picture. As long as I had the tripod out, I took the picture below of the Woodward Memorial Library.

I had a little time to drive around a bit late this afternoon and headed out to Bethany. Driving down Francis Road, I came across a couple of picture opportunities.

Photos: Swamp Road barn fire

By Howard B. Owens

An old barn -- the owner believes it was the oldest on Swamp Road -- was destroyed in a fire of undetermined origin this afternoon.

The barn was owned by Howard and Sandra Lee Brew, of 7557 Swamp Road, Bergen. Brew said he has lived on the farm, once owned by his father, his entire life. He's 67.

Bergen Fire Department along with mutual aid from several other departments (we don't have the complete list yet, but we believe it included Byron, South Byron, City of Batavia (Fast Team), Town of Batavia, Le Roy, Brockport, Churchville, Holley, Pavilion and York, which had a crew on standby in its hall.  The Sheriff's Office and Emergency Services were also on scene.

The initial call came in at about 12:50 p.m.

Photo: Clear sky over Centennial Park

By Howard B. Owens

It's 50 degrees, the skies are clear, the sun is out -- yeah, sure, it's windy, but surely this is a sign of early spring, right?

Don't get your hopes up.

By 9 p.m., temperatures are expected to dip to 36 degrees, and it will be below freezing by 10 a.m.

There's a 50-percent chance of snow over night.

The the next 10-day forecast shows nothing much above 30 degrees.

BTW: There's also a wind advisory in effect until 6 p.m. Winds will be 20 to 30 mph with gusts of 55 mph.

Photo: Smith Road Sunset

By Howard B. Owens

I spent most of the afternoon in Le Roy looking for news. I came up blank, but as the sun started to set, I took some back roads home to Batavia. This was shot on Smith Road, Pavilion Bethany.

Photo: Snow Dragon

By Howard B. Owens

The residents at 5645 Ebb Road, Byron, found something creative to do with the piles of snow plowed and piled up next to their driveway -- they built a snow dragon.

Photo: A murder of crows

By Howard B. Owens

A murder of crows -- that's what you call a group of them, not a flock -- were hanging out on Summit Street early this evening.

With their constant caw-caw-caw they were making quite a ruckus -- like something out of Hitchcock's "The Birds."

At one point, they seemed to have every branch in this tree covered.
