Genesee County officials, in coordination with local and state agencies, are prioritizing the safety and security of all attendees at the forthcoming Wings Over Batavia Air Show. This event is scheduled to occur at the Genesee County Airport on Saturday, August 31, and Sunday, September 1, from 5 - 9 p.m.

Comprehensive Safety Measures

The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, Genesee County Office of Emergency Management, New York State Police, City of Batavia Police Department, Town of Batavia Fire Department and Mercy Flight EMS are collaborating to implement a comprehensive safety plan. Emergency service providers will be stationed on-site to ensure public safety and to provide immediate response to any medical emergencies that may arise.

Special Effects and Aerial Maneuvers

As part of the air show, planes will perform various flying, diving, and maneuvering displays. Additionally, there will be planned explosions, pyrotechnic displays, and fireworks, all managed exclusively by the event organizers. Attendees and nearby residents are reminded that these activities are planned and should not cause alarm. Please refrain from dialing 911 unless it’s an actual emergency. 

Traffic Control

In preparation for and during the event State Street Road will be closed from West Saile Drive north to Batavia Elba Townline Road, and West Saile Drive will be closed from the Milton Cat building to the storage barns on the east side of the Airport. Motorists are urged to follow signage and flaggers, exercise caution, and remain alert to changing conditions. Pedestrians should adhere to marked paths and signage.

Satellite Parking at GCC

This year, a satellite parking option will be available at Genesee Community College (GCC). Buses will shuttle attendees between GCC and the airport, with drop-off at the main entrance and pick-up at the airport’s main terminal for return to GCC.

Six Flags Darien Lake Hosts July 4th Fireworks

Six Flags Darien Lake, the Thrill Capital of New York, will celebrate Independence Day with a spectacular fireworks show on July 4. Dazzling Patriotic fireworks set to Patriotic music will light up the night sky at 9:45 p.m. after our Laser Light Spectacular show.

Guests can experience heart-pounding coasters and exciting attractions along with our Laser Light Spectacular show running each night July 3 - 7. The Theme Park is open 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. and Hurricane Harbor is open 11:30 a.m. - 7 p.m.

The Ridge NY in Le Roy hosted a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Weekend. It is the only professional fireworks display in the county this year.

As we approach the  Fourth of July Independence Day Holiday, Fire Chief Stefano Napolitano of the City of Batavia Fire Department would like to remind the residents of the City of what sparkling devices are allowed by law.

“We want to ensure that our residents enjoy the holiday in a safe and responsible manner,” Napolitano said.

According to the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services "Sparking Devices" are considered, “ground-based or handheld devices that produce a shower of colored sparks and or a colored flame, audible crackling or whistling noise and smoke.”

"These sparkling devices can only be bought and sold from June 1st to July 5th and from December 26th to January 1st in any given year," Napolitano said, furthermore, the law states that “Sales of sparkling devices by certified temporary stands or tents can only occur from June 20th to July 5th and December 26th to January 1st in any given year.”

According to the fire chief, allowable sparkling devices under the law are sparkling fountains, sparklers on wooden sticks (not metal sticks), smoking devices, snakes confetti-filled party poppers and paper-wrapped snappers. Non-allowable and illegal devices include firecrackers, bottle rockets, Roman candles and any other aerial devices.

As a result of COVID-19 canceling many public fireworks displays, Chief Napolitano recommends the following alternatives to celebrate the Fourth of July Holiday without fireworks. Furthermore, these alternatives are pet and children friendly.

• Use glow sticks; they glow in the dark and are a safe alternative to a sparkler.
• Use noisemakers; they can be found at a local party supply store.
• Red, white and blue Silly String.
• Outdoor movie night. Set up a television or screen and projector.
• Make patriotic crafts with the family.

Lastly, Napolitano says it is important to take the necessary fire safety precautionary steps when using these devices. Last year there were 18,500 fireworks-related injuries reported in the United States.

The Batavia Muckdogs provided the second of two July 4th Weekend fireworks shows after tonight's game.

Note: There is no home game July 4, so don't expect fireworks.

Anyone know who had the fireworks and why?  I watched them from my window, so they were south east of Main St.  Any ideas?

It's about 7 minutes past 10 o'clock and I'm seeing fireworks northbound on Bank Street off Main Street.

I'll try and get a few pictures with my cellphone.

UPDATE: Got some pictures. I'll post them in a little bit. Turns out the fireworks were coming from Dwyer Stadium. Sorry about the spacing on the original post. I was using my phone and rushing to get everything typed out to get some pictures before they stopped.
