Volunteers for Animals' 15th annual Fur Ball to benefit their Spay/Neuter Program at the Genesee County Animal Shelter will take place starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Days Inn in Batavia.

The hotel is located at 200 Oak St.

There will be food, fun, basket raffles and silent auctions.

Tickets are $25 each; tickets for children 12 and under are $15. A table of 10 -- with 10 seats -- costs $250.

The event is limited to 200 tickets.

Town of Bethany Republican Committee will host a pulled pork BBQ catered by BW's Restaurant & Banquet Facility on Friday, Sept. 7 from 5 to 8 p.m. in Genesee County Park & Forest, Pavilion A.

Tickets are $15 each; $6 for children 5 to 12; kids under 5 eat free.

There will also be a prize raffle, 50/50 raffle.

The Batavia Society of Artists is excited to announce that the demonstrating artist at GO ART! on Tuesday, Sept. 11th, will be Brian O'Neill, a Rochester Art Club Signature Member and internationally known fine art painter.

The artist's contemporary, dynamic and expressive abstract paintings are really fantastic, says Nikki Tamfer, of the Batavia Society of Artists, and he is also known for his oil realism.

Byron Kiwanis Annual Beef BBQ and Auction -- Sunday, Sept. 9th at Byron Fire Hall on Route 262 (6357 E. Main St.) starting at noon with live auction at 1 p.m.

Auction items includes freshly baked pies, local produce, gift certificates as well as many other treasures.

The "Fight Like Mike" chicken BBQ to benefit Mike Tenebruso will be held at The Yngodess Shop in Downtown Batavia on Sunday, Sept. 9. Starts at 12:30 and served until sold out.

The Yngodess Shop is located at 73 Main St.

Tickets are $12 and price includes: BBQ chicken, salt potatoes, beans, roll & butter, and a bottle of water.

Saturday, Sept. 15, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the Genesee County Master Gardeners will be hosting their annual Fall Garden Gala at the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County, 420 E. Main St. in Batavia.

The plant sale features hardy perennials, most grown by Master Gardeners. Fall is a good time to plant many perennials as it gives them time to grow a strong root system before winter. Locally grown mums will also be for sale as well as a selection of house plants.

“The Traveling Ghost” -- a photographic exhibit featuring abandoned buildings found in Western New York -- opens at GO ART! in Downtown Batavia on Thursday, Sept. 20.

There will be an artist reception for its photographer Ryan Gustman the same day from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20. Also, Tavern  2.o.1 will be open.

The Visual Truth Theatre Ensemble will present "A Killer, A Victim, A Mourner" -- an original absurdist physical theater performance -- on Thursday, Aug. 30, at Moonjava Cafe in Batavia.

The ensemble includes actors Emily Crawford, Richard Ferris, Lucine Kauffman.

The play, written by Eric Zwieg, incorporates dialogue, music, puppetry, masking, physical theater and absurdist elements that tell an existential story of greed, tragedy and loss. 

A $5 donation is suggested.

Doors open at 6:30; the performance begins at 7 p.m.

In recognition of the relationship and love between people and their pets the Morganville United Church of Christ invites all to bring their pets (or a photo) to our special 10 a.m. service on Sunday, Sept. 16, for them to receive God’s blessing.

Each pet blessed will receive a Certificate of Blessing from Pastor James Morasco. Pets need to be on a leash or safely in your care.

This free show is coming to Batavia at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 5, for the residents and families of the New York Veterans’ Home, 220 Richmond Ave.

Genesee Community College's History Club will begin its fall lecture series on Wednesday, Sept. 5, when Kevin R. Pawlak speaks on "The Jewels of War: Robert E. Lee, George B. McClellan and the Battle of Antietam."

The free lecture will take place at 7 p.m. in Room T102 in the Conable Technology Building at GCC's Batavia Campus, located at One College Road. All are invited.

The History Club will host a lecture on the first Wednesday evening of every month this fall as part of its Historical Horizons Lecture Series. 

Women of the Moose in Le Roy will host a Pig Roast to benefit the YWCA of Genesee County from 1 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Loyal Order of Moose No. 1132, located at 21 Bank St. in Le Roy.

There will be basket raffles, prize raffles, and 50/50.

Food: roasted pork, salt potatoes, macaroni salad, corn on the cob, baked beans, roll and butter, dessert. All you can eat; includes a bottle of water. Cash bar. No take-out containers will be provided for in-house dining.

Price: Adults -- $12; Kids 11 and older -- $7; Kids 10 and under eat free.

The 71st annual Batavia Gun and Sportsman Show, sponsored by the Alabama Hunt Club, will be held the weekend of Sept. 15 and 16 at Quality Inn & Suites in Batavia. There will be more than 150 vendor and exhibitor tables and plenty of free parking.

Sunday hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The hotel is located at 8250 Park Road and features a restaurant and a water park.

Admission is $6. Children under 12 get in free when accompanied by adult.

On Saturday, Oct. 6, the Byron Fire Department will hold their annual Sportsman’s Raffle at the hall on Route 262 in the Town of Byron.

The event begins at 1 p.m. with doors opening at noon. A meal and snacks are included in the price of the ticket.

There are fishing, hunting, camping and boating packages as well as cash awards and 50/50 raffles throughout the day.

All proceeds go to the support of the Byron Fire Department.

There will be a public informational meeting for the proposed Bethany Water District #5 on Monday, Sept. 17, at 6 p.m. at the Bethany Town Hall. This is to discuss the $14.5 million water project for most of Bethany.

The public is encouraged to attend.
