Rick was a loving father and grandfather. He always made family his first priority and he enjoyed spending quality time with them. His favorite hobby was restoring classic cars. He enjoyed playing chess with his kids and euchre with his friends at work. He had a great sense of humor and a kind heart. He was a hard and dedicated worker his whole life. He was a proud painter and rolls operator at Graham Corporation for the past 29 years. 

He is survived by his children; Christina Macklem of N. Chili, Jennifer Styer of Batavia, Robert Macklem of Attica and Joshua (Christy Chamberlain) Macklem of Batavia; siblings Brian Macklem of Hilton, Vincent Macklem of TX., Denise Macklem of OK., and Robert Macklem of Batavia; 4 beloved grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours and Services will be private for the family. Rick will be laid to rest in Grandview Cemetery in Batavia.

He was born Aug. 7, 1948, in Niagara Falls, N.Y., to the late Harry R. and Ruth (Botts) Gaylord, also preceded in death by his brother, Gerald Gaylord and granddaughter, Hannah Michelle.

Paul served his country honorably with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He has been serving as the commander of the DAV and was an active member of the Joint Veterans Honor Guard of Genesee County, Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion and the VFW. He served as a veteran mentor for the Genesee County Drug Court, a member of Ascension Parish and a 4th Degree Knight/Grand Knight with the Monsignor Kirby Council of the Knights of Columbus.

Paul will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a man of faith in the Lord. He was a friend to all that knew him, just met him and those who had not. Paul, the world is a little less bright knowing that you have gone home to rest in eternal peace with the Lord.

Surviving is his beloved wife, Michelle (Zanghi) Gaylord of Batavia; children, Christian Gaylord, Oliver (Karen) Gaylord, Shawn Gaylord, Aaron (Jessica) Gaylord, Joshua (Joyce) Gaylord and Samantha (Emmett) Maguire; 13 cherished grandchildren, Brandon, Olivia, Cambrie, Trey, Ethan, Lily, Dominic, Sebastian, Rocco, Vincent, Thomas and Christianna Jean; siblings, Peggy (Nick) Falanga, Carol (James) Brandes, Robert (Millie) Gaylord, Donna (Sherman) Gaylord; sisters-in-law Rosanne (Robert) Wray, Mary Ellen (Jeffrey) Wilber, brothers-in-law Philip Zanghi, and the late David Zanghi, along with many nieces and nephews.

Because of the COVID-19 epidemic, Paul’s visitation has been scheduled for Sept. 2, 2020 from 3p.m. to 8 p.m., at Michael Tomaszewski’s Funeral Home, limiting visitation to 33% capacity. A memorial service will be at Michael Tomaszewski’s Funeral Home on Sept. 3, 2020, at 11 a.m. Paul will be laid to rest in the future Western New York Veterans Cemetery. Memorials in his memory are suggested to a charity of the donor’s choice.

The family of Paul F. Gaylord is being cared for by the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC, 4120 W. Main Street Road, Batavia NY 14020.

He was born May 14, 1949 in Batavia, a son of the late William S. and Mary A. Freeman Sutherland.

For 41 years, Coach Sutherland shaped the hearts and minds of generations of Notre Dame students. During his storied tenure he taught Global Studies and Physical Education.  Coach served several stints as Director of Athletics.  In addition, he filled in as acting Principal in 1994 when dear friend and beloved Principal Nick Borrelli was hospitalized and ultimately passed away.  The lives he touched are too numerous to list. 

In 2007 the Section V Hall of Fame rewarded the legendary coach on the completion of his stellar career which included 7 GR League Football titles, 13 GR League Baseball titles as well as Section V Titles for Football in ’78, 80, ’81 and ’99.  Section V Baseball Titles in ’79, ’80, ’86, ’87, ’02 and ’03.  Retirement kept coach active as he added Sectional Titles for Golf in ’12, ’13 and ’14.  Coach’s teams won big games.  In 15 Section V Championship appearances, his teams won 14 times.  While pursuing his Masters Degree in History at SUNY Brockport, Bill was hired in 1986 as Offensive Line Coach, and later Offensive Coordinator for the Brockport Golden Eagles, where he was instrumental in reviving the longtime program.  Coach was always proud to have been selected as Coach for the prestigious Eddie Meath All Star Football game in 1996 alongside fellow legends Mike Monacelli of Cal-Mum and Brian Moran of LeRoy.  In addition to the Section V Hall of Fame, Coach Sutherland was also enshrined in the Notre Dame High School Hall of Fame and the Western NY Baseball Hall of Fame.  He was an avid golfer and a proud member of Batavia Country Club, where he spent numerous days in the warm weather golfing with friends and family.

Of all of his accomplishments, Coach Sutherland was most proud of the coaches that learned at his side, and later continued on with successful careers of their own, including Coach Denny Tresco and more recently ND great Rick Mancuso, who walked the sidelines next to him for most of 30 years.  A proud member of the local community, he was always happy to have spent his life here in Batavia with childhood pals and coaching greats Jim Briggs and Jim Fanara.

Survivors include his loving wife, Melanie Montague Sutherland of Batavia. Son, Billy (Ashley) Sutherland of Batavia. Daughter, Jen (Kevin) Forsyth of South Alabama. Grandchildren Nora Ryan Forsyth and Patrick William Forsyth. Siblings, Kathleen (Chris) George of Batavia, Ann (late Corky) Pringle of Batavia, David (Annie) Sutherland of Rochester, Mary Sutherland of Batavia and Jim (Tracy) Sutherland of Batavia. Sisters in-law, Judy Della Penna of Batavia and Wendy (Charles) Pero of Atlanta, GA. Also survived by his canine companion, Molly and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was the uncle of the late Ryan Sutherland.

Family and friends are cordially invited to share thoughts, condolences and fond memories on Wednesday (Aug. 26^th) and Thursday (Aug. 27^th) from 4-8pm in the gymnasium of Notre Dame High School, 73 Union St., Batavia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, 11am at Notre Dame High School. Interment will be in St. Brigid’s Cemetery in Bergen.

Wearing of a face covering and social distancing will be enforced throughout visitation and funeral service.

Mary L. Knowlton, 81, of Corfu, passed away Wednesday, August 19, 2020, at United Memorial Medical Center, Batavia.

Mary was born on September 21, 1938, in Akron, a daughter of the late Robert and Maybelle Rosenthal Brady. She was the wife of the late William C. Knowlton and grandmother of the late Kelsey N. Milks.

Mary was a devoted wife and mother. She loved being in the kitchen and was known for making the best coffee. Mary loved attending all the party’s that were held at 400 Towers when she lived there and doing puzzles.

Mary is survived by her son, Randy (Antionette) Savage; daughters, Robin Parks and Roxanne (Greg) Milks; sister, Annette (Frank) Pfalzer; brother Robert (late Barbara) Brady; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services will immediately follow at 1 pm in Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Corfu. A face covering is required at the funeral home and capacity limited to 33% due to  COVID-19 restrictions.

Paul was born January 7, 1973, in Batavia, the son of Diane (Sterling) Burroughs of Batavia and the late Gene Avino.

Paul was an avid sports fan. He loved the New York Giants and Yankees. Paul had a hidden artistic talent and a funny sense of humor. He over came his life struggles and served his Lord. He loved spending time with his family and friends. WNY Concrete was his extended family where he was employed.

Survivors include his mother and step-father, Diane (Ron) Burroughs of Batavia; sister, Gina Avino of Batavia; step-brothers, Greg (Christine) Burroughs of South Windsor, CT and Wayne (Darlene) Burroughs of Alexander; step-sister, Sherry (Michael) Lucien of Phoenix, AZ; uncles, aunts, cousins and a special friend, Christina Scopano.

Services for Paul will be held privately and he will be laid to rest in St. Joseph's Mausoleum, Batavia.

Byron - Richard C. "Barney" Barnard, Sr., 88, passed away Thursday, August 13, 2020, at New York State Veteran's Home.

Mr. Barnard was born September 1, 1931, in Byron, son of the late George and Elsie Airth Barnard.

Survivors include his beloved wife of 65 years Helen Kwasniak Barnard; his children: Vicki (late Gene) Austin of Batavia, Michelle (Peter) Yasses of Byron Richard (Pam Pera) Barnard, Jr. of Barre and Mary (Joe) Hawken of Brentwood, Tennessee and his sister: Arlene Boldt of Byron. Barney is also survived by ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

He is predeceased by his siblings, Burton Barnard, Stanley Barnard, Lois Watson, Leone Sadler, Lester Barnard and Dean Barnard.

Barney's family wishes to extend their sincere appreciation and gratitude to the staff at the New York State Veteran's Nursing Home for the caring and compassionate care he received while he was a resident.

John P. Farley, 84, of Corfu, passed away peacefully at his home, Friday, August 21, 2020.

John was born on December 8, 1935, in Elmira, NY, a son of the late John E. and Ida Mathew Farley.

He was the husband of the late Sonja Farley and father of the late John Edward Farley.

John was a corrections officer, retiring from Attica Correctional Facility. He, along with his late wife Sonja, were longtime caretakers of St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Crittenden. John served in the United States Navy.

Surviving are: his children, James A. (Dawn Crull) Farley, Jerald M. (Dawn) Farley, Jeffrey E. (Margaret) Farley and Judith A. Farley; his siblings, Mary Feldman, Theresa Striegel, Matthew (Theresa) Farley and Ida (Anthony) Dandrea; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Many nieces and nephews also survive.

Diana F. Cooley, 69, of Batavia passed away on August 11, 2020 at the Premier Genesee Nursing Facility. She was born on November 14, 1950 in Buffalo to the late Arthur and Frances (Gonyea) Defoe.

Diana worked for many years as a dog groomer and trainer. She loved all of her animals very much. She enjoyed doing arts and crafts. Diana was a long-time member of St. James Episcopal Church in Batavia.

She is survived by her daughters; Karin and Kimberly Cooley; sister Lenora Shepard; step-siblings Donna Scott, James Scott, Diane and Norm, Debbie and Debbie; cousins Charlene Urbanski, Esther Skotniski, Charlotte Witkop, along with many other nieces and nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours and a private Funeral Service will be held at the convenience of the family. Diana will be laid to rest in Grandview Cemetery in Batavia.

Bergen ~ Brett James Beverly, 37, passed away peacefully in his sleep on August 17, 2020.

     He is the son of Aubrey and Patti Gemsheim Beverly and is survived by his siblings, Aimee (Jeff) Maurer, Mark Puma, Matt Beverly (Riley Galbraith), Katie (Bryan) Mazerbo, Justin (Kennedy) Beverly, Jenna Beverly and several nieces and nephews.

     He was predeceased by his brothers, Nick Puma and Bryan Beverly.

     He was a member of The City Church and will be remembered for his unique sense of humor and being a caring son, brother, and uncle. He had such a loving and strong bond with his mother and father.
