THOMAS J. PIERCE ~ age 82, of Elba, NY, died peacefully Thursday November 1, 2018 at the Premier Genesee Center. He was born May 18, 1936, in Olean, NY, the son of the late Earl and Mildred (Fahy) Pierce. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Mae King; siblings, Henry, Lyle, Donald Pierce and Betty Benson.

Mr. Pierce grew up in Allegany, served honorably from 1955 – 1959 in the United States Navy and raised his family in Caledonia, NY. He was a heavy equipment operator for the Rochester Union, member of the York Sportsmen’s Club and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Elba. Tom had a love for the outdoors, a houndsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, snowmobiling, and camping. Tom as he aged enjoyed traveling and trips to the casino.

Surviving is his beloved wife of 20 years, Irene (Roth) Pierce; children, Thomas J. (Nancy) Pierce II, Terry J. (Wendy) Pierce, Dean A. (Teresa) Pierce; step-children, Betsy Griffith, Lisa Griffith, Kelly (Jay) Zintel and Kris (Ted) Tsoukalos; siblings, Jack (Peggy) Pierce, Jerry (Mary) Pierce, Richard (Betty) Pierce; grandchildren, Brent, Jonathon, Kaylynn and Kennedi, 10 step-grandchildren; special sister-in-law, Brenda Pierce; in-laws, Reba Pierce, Judy King, Clement (Beverly) King, Jr.

The Pierce family will be present from 10-1p.m. on Wednesday November 7, 2018 at the MICHAEL S. FILOMENA “LENA” PELLEGRINO ~ age 96, died peacefully Wednesday, October 31, 2018 at Premier Genesee Nursing & Rehabilitation. Lena was born in Varapodio Reggio Calabria, Italy on August 9, 1922 the daughter of the late Francesco and Carmella (Gatto) Pellegrino also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Domenico Pellegrino in 1998.

Shortly after WWII she married her sweetheart, Domenico in October of 1946 and together they moved their young family to the United States aboard the Andrea Doria in 1955. Lena loved her new life in the United States and would often “practice” the Pledge of Allegiance with her children and she became a US citizen during the 1976 Bicentennial. Her passions were cooking and she took great pride in preparing Sunday dinners that were enjoyed by family and friend. Her joy of cooking had her working at the Pellegrino Family Bakery on Liberty, the former St. Jerome’s Hospital and the VA Medical Center retiring in 1980.

Lena is survived by her beloved children, Frank Pellegrino of Batavia, Angela (Rocco) Barrese, Carmela (Matteo) Barrese both of Ontario Canada, Nancy (Herb) Chapman of Batavia and Nino (Denise) Pellegrino of Auburn; cherished grandchildren, Dr. Nancy (Carl) Damiani, Frank (Angela) Barrese, Romina (Michael) Cain, Dominic (Dena) Barrese, Frank (Maggie) Barrese, Rudi & Mark Barrese, Ian & Christopher Chapman; Dominic Pellegrino; 11 great-grandchildren along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Basom - Joseph J. Richthammer, 63, of Basom, a Union Carpenter at Carpenter's Local 276 in  Cheektowaga, died Friday, November 2, 2018 at his home in Basom.

Mr. Richthammer was born March 24, 1955 in Bayshore, LI, NY, the son of the late Hal and Helen (Magnus) Richthammer.

He served during the Vietnam War with the US Marine Corps.  He was a member of VFW, Lincoln Post 1482 and former member of American Legion, Hiram G. Luhman Post #626.   He had also worked as a heavy equipment operator for Conrail in Buffalo. He was an avid sportsman and hunted many North American animals.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy (Desjardins) Richthammer, whom he married on February 21, 1976; 2 daughters,  Marcy (Jeffrey) Burger of Batavia and Samantha (Brad) Hilchey of Oakfield; 2 granddaughters, Makayla Hilchey-Richthammer of Oakfield and Ashleigh Burger of Batavia; 7 siblings,  Nancy (Gerald) Hess of S. Wales, Hal (Patricia) Richthammer of Union, OK,  Diane (Jerry) Mead of Churchville, Donna (Jeffrey) Alexander of Corfu, Gloria (Joseph) Record of Newport News, VA, Edward (Sandra) Richthammer of Clovis, NM and Robert (Nellie) Richthammer of Grand Rapids, MI; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

Eric Hiscutt, 44, died unexpectedly in a car accident near his home in Colorado on October 28, 2018. 
Born Eric Adam Hiscutt in 1974 to Paul Hiscutt and Nancy Brasky Schmieder in Batavia, NY, Eric was loved by many. He had a knack of forming close friendships quickly that lasted a lifetime. Eric had a big heart and loving spirit. He traveled the world working in exotic locations and living internationally much of his adult life, yet always staying connected with his family and friends he made along the way. 

Eric leaves behind his son, Cole Hiscutt of Colorado as well as his parents Nancy (Jim) Schmieder, Paul (Beth) Hiscutt,; siblings Stacie (Mike) Beccaria, Gretchen (Sam) Fire, Josh Schmieder, Laura Schmieder, and Dar Dehmler; Grandmother Alice Brasky; and many extended family members and dear friends. 

A memorial service will be held at Northgate Free Methodist Church, South Campus, 350 Bank Street in Batavia from 5-7 p.m. on Saturday November 17.

Alexis “Alex” Ronaldo Chavez, 20 of Oakfield, NY, passed away Tuesday (October 30, 2018) at Strong Memorial Hospital after a long battle with leukemia.

He was born September 20, 1998 in El Paso, TX, a son of Vidal and Carmelina Munoz Chavez.

Alex attended Elba Central School and graduated from Oakfield Alabama High School in 2016. He enjoyed electronics, graphic design, music and was a huge fan of the Buffalo Bills. He had a sense of humor and was known by many for his jokes, eye lashes and smile. Alex had a love for Christ and had newly rekindled his relationship with the lord. Most of all, he loved his family and friends and wanted to partake in helping other kids with leukemia, trying to keep their spirits up.

Survivors include his parents, Vidal and Carmelina Chavez of Oakfield.  Brothers, Douglas Yovani Marco Munoz of Guatemala and Luis (Elizabeth) Chavez of Oakfield. Sister, Maria (Matthew Russo III) Chavez of Lancaster. Girlfriend, Chelsea McEwen of Brockport. Nieces and nephews, Emmitt and Leyla Chavez and Matthew Russo IV. Uncle, Julio Munoz.

  The Greatest Generation lost another one of its greatest. On Tuesday October 30, 2018, William Joseph Schum, loving husband and father of three children passed away at age 92 while in hospice in Winston-Salem, NC. William was born May 26, 1926 in Batavia, NY to Augustus and Alice (Bristol) Schum.

William served in the US Army stationed in Europe during World War II. He was employed in the printing profession for over 45 years earning the position of Pressroom Supervisor at the Batavia Daily News as well as an Associate’s Degree in Printing from RIT. On June 19, 1948 he married Meryl (Kriger) Schum, with whom he shared over 70 magical years. Together they raised one daughter, Suzanne and two sons, Richard and Gary.

William was passionate about helping his children and grandchildren, always asserting his positive attitude, wildly enthusiastic sense of humor and compassion. He loved to travel cross-country with his family and later, traveling to spend time with grandchildren and support their endeavors. He took many trips with family and grandchildren to Walt Disney World always making sure to visit the Enchanted Tiki Room and indulging in Mickey Ice Cream Bars. He was an avid bowler and a fan of the Buffalo Bills, attending the last two Super Bowls the Bills played in and making an annual trek to Buffalo to attend a game. He proudly wore his Buffalo Bills hat wherever he went. After moving from Batavia to North Carolina, he and Meryl enjoyed traveling back to Batavia and to Cary, IL to visit children, grandchildren and friends.

He was fortunate to see his grandson Christopher play many NCAA and more recently pro golfing events. He loved to watch Kimberly perform on stage and became a “super fan” for his grandson Connor during his high school football years. He enjoyed watching his two granddaughters Elizabeth and Courtney ride horses and enjoyed telling war tales to his grandsons Grant and Brent. There was never a visit to any of his children’s homes when he wouldn’t fix something – always willing to help – he loved home improvement and did his own home repairs and maintenance right up to his 91st birthday. William also loved his miniature long-haired dachshund Minnie which was only exceeded by his love for ice cream. Rarely was there a dinner out that wasn’t followed by a trip to the ice cream parlor! Perhaps his greatest love was his wife of 70 years, Meryl. Always looking out for her best interests right up to his last days. We will always remember the wedding dances where they were the last couple standing – they were the exemplary soulmates.

William was preceded in death by his father Augustus; mother Alice; brothers Donald and Eugene.

He is survived by his wife of 70 years; Meryl; brother Courtney of Kettering, OH; daughter Suzanne (Steve) Green, grandchildren Christopher (Rachel) Green, Kimberly Green (Brian Janty), Connor Green, great granddaughter Emma Green; son Richard Schum & granddaughter Elizabeth Schum of Winston-Salem, NC; son Gary Schum & grandchildren Grant, Brent & Courtney Schum of Alexander, NY, along with 3 nephews.

There will be no prior calling hours. An 11:00AM Funeral Service will be held on Monday November 5, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church, 8221 Lewiston Rd, Batavia, NY 14020 followed by lunch at the church.

Richard A. Young, 89, of Ellicottville, formerly of Attica and Alexander passed away on Monday October 29, 2018 at his home. He was born November 29, 1928 in Batavia, the son of the late Eugene and Clara (Barone) Young.

A well-known Attica businessman and self-employed salesman, he got his start at the early age of 19 with Dick’s Restaurant. In later years, he proudly owned Richard’s Delicatessen (Dick’s Deli), Clara’s Dress Shoppe and The Theatre Restaurant. He was also an active member of the Attica Lion’s Club. He loved skiing and for three decades was a ski instructor at Holiday Valley Ski Resort. He continued to ski several times a week through the age of 89 and enjoyed sharing the slopes with his sons, grandchildren and great grandchild. 

Mr. Young is survived by his dear companion Lorna Ball (St. Catherines, ON/Ellicottville); mother of his six children Mary (Rider) Young (Alexander); six children Ellie (George) Jinks of Pavilion, Beth (Bob) Parrish of LeRoy, Mary/Kathy (Tom) Young-Murray of LeRoy, Robert Young of Alexander, James (Holly) Young of Laguna Niguel, CA., and Jodi (Mark) Gates of Medina; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Jordan R. Mock, 24, of Warsaw passed away on Tuesday October 30, 2018 at his home. He was born in Warsaw on August 1, 1994, a son to CaryAnn Fuller of Warsaw and the late Robert L. Mock who passed away on 1994. Along with his father he is preceded in death by a brother; Tyler Alexander Wiedrick who passed in 1996; maternal grandmother Bonnie Willey who passed in 2016; paternal grandfather Kenneth L. Mock Sr. who passed in 2008 and uncle Craig Fuller who passed in 2009.

Jordan worked construction for Ferrin Construction in Bliss and Snyder Construction in Warsaw. He enjoyed playing basketball, working on cars, fishing, tattoos, and Chinese food from the restaurant in Perry. He loved spending time with his wife, children, family and friends.

He is survived by his wife Shianne (Flint) Mock whom he married on June 4, 2016; 2 sons Jordan Michael and Kyzer Killian Mock; mother CaryAnn Fuller of Warsaw; sister Nicole (Scott) Lathrop of Warsaw; paternal grandmother Barbara Mock of Leicester; Maternal grandparents Gerald (Roberta) Fuller of Selmar, TN; 3 uncles Kenneth Fuller of FL., Kenneth (Jill Foote) Mock of Leicester, Kevin Mock of Leicester; 2 cousins Alexis Mock and John Michael Slocum; best friend Corwin Sears’ along with many nieces and nephews.

RAY NATHAN “NATE” MOSHER ~ age 96, of Batavia, NY, He passed from this life into eternal life on Sunday morning October 28, 2018 at the home of his daughter and son-in-law. He was born July 31, 1922, in Munsville, NY, the son of the late Paul Nathan and Dorothy (Farman) Mosher. In 1994 he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Brown whom he married on December 31,1955 in Verona, and a brother Calvin Mosher in 2016.

He lived in Munnsville/Stockbridge area until 1946 when he and his father Paul Mosher moved their farm to Verona. Together they built an elite dairy empire, called Council Rock Farms which is very well known in the registered Holstein world. They were premier breeders of quality show and dairy cattle. Nate was instrumental in bringing new ideas for better quality feed to increase milk output in dairy cattle in and around Oneida County. Nate was a private pilot and flew his plane to cattle shows and auctions all across the country. He sold the farm in 1988 and moved to Oneida where he made friends where ever he went. He loved the Lord, he was a member of the Verona United Methodist Church until he left Verona to live with his children in 2008. After that he was a snow bird who lived in New York 6 months of the year, then lived in Georgia and Florida with his other 2 children and their children worshipping and being involved in all the churches he went to. He was adventurous and loved the outdoors, he read and lived his Bible every day. He will be sorely missed but we look forward to meeting him again in Glory!  

Surviving are his 3 children, Margaret “Peggy” (Gregory) Mosher-Zuch of Batavia, Esther (Richard) Mosher-Strombeck of Florida and Paul (Maria) Mosher of Georgia; he leaves behind 10 grandchildren, Joseph, Michael & Dorothy Murphy, Elizabeth Gonzales, Carla (Sergio) Hornug, Benjamin (Lauren) Strombeck, Caitlin (Archie) Simon, Steven (Katie) Mosher, Samuel and Sarah Mosher along with 20 great-grandchildren.

The Mosher family will be present from 4-8p.m. on Friday November 2, 2018 at the MICHAEL S. Blanche M. Casper, 98 of Batavia, passed away peacefully on Sunday (October 28, 2018) at Premier Genesee Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born in Woodchester, England, a daughter of the late Arthur and Nathalie Brun Walker. In England, she attended finishing school as a dressmaker and seamstress and was also employed as a planning clerk for the international company of Newman Henders.

Mrs. Casper and her husband, Emery, met in England in 1943 during World War II and were married in March of 1945. After moving to America, they raised six children while she worked for Sylvania and Eastman Kodak Distribution until retiring in 1982.

Blanche and Emery were parishioners of Resurrection Parish (St. Joseph Church) since 1947. Their strong faith and dedication to the church emanated in many capacities. They both were gardeners for the church for several years, attended daily Mass and led the Rosary of Our Lady of Fatima. Blanche and Emery were awarded “The Lay Award of St. Joseph” from Bishop Kmiec in 2006. Most of all, she enjoyed her family and friends and will be greatly missed by all who knew her caring heart.

She was predeceased by a son, Jerome Casper; daughter, Aileen Casper and three brothers and a sister.

Blanche is survived by her husband of over 73 years, Emery J. Casper of Batavia. Daughters, Monica Casper of Batavia and Valerie (Kenneth) Foxx of Romulus, NY. Sons, Maurice Casper of Florida and Roy Casper of Clifton Park, NY. Also survived by seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Batavia – G. Bill Engelhardt, was a man who loved life and fiercely loved his family.  Bill served his country with the United States Army National Guard and was a volunteer fireman with the Elba Fire Department.

Bill passed away early Saturday morning most unexpectedly at the age of 56.

Bill was born January 1, 1962, a son of the late John Engelhardt and Linda Mead Engelhardt Royse. He is also predeceased by his step-father, Ralph Royse, Sr. and his first wife, Linda Anne DiMartino Engelhardt, who passed away on June 29, 2011.

He is survived by his wife, Joanne M.  Wheeler Engelhardt, whom he married September 1, 2012. Joanne was his everything. Bill is also survived by his children, Ricky Engelhardt, Mary Engelhardt, Jessica Engelhardt, Ronnie Engelhardt, George Engelhardt, Brandon Hines and Jerry Dykstra; two brothers, Ralph (Deb) Royse, Jr. and Ward Royse of Batavia; seven sisters, Helen Engelhardt, Irene McNutt, Linda Royse, Annie Royse, Ruth (Tom) Gilliatt, Malynda Blackshere and Mabel Ramirez; his aunt, Mabel “Mae” (Robert) VanNess who was his hero, friend and role model and several grandchildren and nieces and nephews survive.

Bill loved his Harley Davidson motorcycle and loved giving his grandchildren a ride on the bike. He was a giver, not a taker. Bill believed in helping anyone whenever possible. He was a man that did not pull punches. He loved snowy owls, so whenever you spot one, know its Bill flying free and watching over everyone.

Elba - Stewart G. Hare, age 90, of Elba, passed away on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at United Memorial Medical Center.

Mr. Hare was born August 12, 1928 in Albion, a son of the late Alton S. Hare and Ruth Snyder Hare.

He is predeceased by his wife, Jean Gillard Hare, passed away on February 5, 2014 and his son, James S. Hare passed away on September 12, 2018. Mr. Hare is also predeceased by his siblings, Eunice Murphy and Maurice Hare.

He is survived by his children, Thomas Hare of Batavia, Andrew (Dawn) Hare and Amy (Marty) Stucko, both of Elba; his daughter-in-law, Mary Hare of Red Hook; eleven grandchildren, Tracy (Andy) Belmont, Emma and Maddie Hare; Mark (Laura) Hare and Hayley Hare; Collin and Meg Stucko; Catherine, Dennis, Erin and Kerry Hare; two great-grandchildren, Avery and Paisley Belmont and several nieces and nephews.

A graduate of Elba Central School and Colgate University, Mr. Hare was a longtime financial advisor working for Sage Rutty & Company in Batavia and then as an independent financial advisor in Elba.  A lifetime member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elba, he was a member of the former Elba Rotary Club and served as the Mayor of Elba during the 1960's and was instrumental in bringing the sewer project to the village.

He loved aviation and anything to do with airplanes; especially vintage aircrafts and crop-dusters. He shared this passion with his late son Jim and would visit the Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome where Jim was an active advocate for the museum. An avid reader, Mr. Hare had a passion for following the stock market, traveling to Myrtle Beach and Gulf Shores with his late wife, Jean in their retirement and the numerous family vacations that were spent at the Adirondack Mountains.

Warsaw ~ Dorothy L. Swineford, age 70, formerly of LeRoy and Batavia, passed away Wednesday evening (October 24, 2018) at the Wyoming County Community Skilled Nursing Facility in Warsaw.

    

She was born November 6, 1947 in Warsaw, N.Y., a daughter of the late Albert and Alice Reichenbach Courtney.

     Dorothy was a loving mother and grandmother, who loved animals and enjoyed doing crafts and just driving around the countryside.

     She is survived by her daughters, Lonnie Peterson of Batavia and Tammy (Mike) Reinhart of Pavilion; her husband, Floyd "Woody" Swineford; grandchildren, Melissa Peterson, Jessica Ianiro, Mathew Ianiro, Bradley Fairbanks, Bobby Reinhart, Cody Reinhart and Zachary Reinhart; 3 great-grandchildren; sister, Beverly Rogers of Caledonia, along with many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her sisters, Betty and Marge.

     Family and friends may call on Saturday, Nov. 3 from 12 ~ 2 P.M. at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake Rd. (Rt. 19), LeRoy, where services will be held at 2:00 P.M.  Interment in Elmwood Cemetery, Silver Springs will be private.

Sharon Nanette Williams, 54 of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday (October 24, 2018) at her residence.

She was born February 19, 1964 in Batavia, NY, a daughter of the late C.J. and Rosa C. Hatcher Williams.

She was predeceased by her sister Angelia C. Williams.

Survivors include her sister, Carolyn G. Williams of Florida. Brothers, Danny L. Williams of Batavia, Lennon B. Williams of Batavia and Eric P. Williams of East Pembroke, as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins nieces and nephews with deep affection for Pratorian, Zebadiah, Ezekiel and Brandon.
