Jane V. Scalia

Jane V. Scalia, 88 of Batavia, passed away on Monday July 29, 2013 at the United Memorial Medical Center. She was born on March 4, 1925 in Batavia to the late Peter (Jennie Gallina) Scalia. Ms. Scalia worked for Doehler Jarvis, Kodak, A&P Supermarket, Super Duper, and Jubilee. She was a longtime member of Ascension Parish-St. Anthony’s Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and the St. Nicholas Social Club Auxiliary. Ms. Scalia enjoyed Bingo, Cards, Crossword Puzzles, traveling and was known as an amazing storyteller. Her greatest joy was being a loving part of her nieces and nephews lives. She is preceded in death by her sister Mary (Lawrence) Barone, brother-in-law Norman Havens, and great-nephew Peter “PJ” Scalia, Jr.   

She is survived by her brother Anthony (Julia) Scalia of Batavia; sister Anna Mae “Anne” Havens of Batavia, along with several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great nieces and great-great nephews.   

Her wishes were to have no prior calling hours. A 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2013 at Ascension Parish 19 Sumner St. Batavia, NY 14020. Interment will be in St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Batavia.

THEODORE S. KUHNS

   Age 56, of Mumford, died peacefully Tuesday July 23, 2013 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born November 23, 1956 in Albion, a son of Eunice (Lusk) Kuhns of Waterport and the late George Kuhns.

   Teddy was employed at Sodoma Farms in Brockport, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and campfires with his friends. He had a great love for the outdoors, his dog "Nolan" and was most proud of his son, David, currently assisting in Afghanistan where he is an independent security contractor.

   Surviving is his loving son, David (Melanie) Kuhns of Albion; brothers, Floyd (Judy) of KY, Kenny of Holley, Harry of Waterport, Tom (Lori) of Batavia and Joe of NC; sisters, Linda Burgio of Albion, Sandy (Clyde Dicks) Wills of Elba, Marty Kuhns of Albion, Pat (Evan) German of TN, Kathy (Chuck) Frisco of FL, Debbie (Scott) Jenkins of FL, Connie Kuhns of Waterport, Sherrie (David) Turkey of Canada, Shelly Crawford of NC; along with his daughter-in-law, Melanie, a special niece and caregiver, Lucretta "Renie" (Calvin) Maines of Elba and their children, Quentin & Mickayla; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and dear friends.

   Teddy's wishes were to have services held privately for the family, memorials in his memory are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.

ARTHUR G. AUSTIN

Age 79, of Batavia died Thursday evening July 18, 2013 at his home in Batavia. He was born February 15, 1934 in Alleghany, NY to the late Oscar & Mildred (Sterling) Austin.

   Mr. Austin was Marine Corp. Veteran having served in the Korean Conflict and was retired from Graham Manufacturing Co.

   Burial will be in Bath National Cemetery with Full Military Honors.

Jennie Hartrick

Jennie Hartrick, 86 of Batavia, died July 26, 2013 in Rochester General Hospital. She was born March 7, 1927 in Bethany Center to the late Joseph (Mary Woronski) Zalenski. Mrs. Hartrick was retired from Massey Harris; she was a member of Resurrection Parish in Batavia. Jennie was an avid bingo player and she enjoyed crocheting and camping. She is preceded in death by her husband Bernard “Bud” Hartrick, brothers Eugene, Walter, and Joseph Zalenski Jr., her sisters Stella Fladie, Mary Barniak and Blanche Balicki.

She is survived by her son Robert (Susan) Hartrick of Dale, NY; daughter Barbara (Robert) Hazen of Medina, granddaughter Theresa (Matthew) Manela of Norton, MA, two great-grandsons Alex and Aiden Manela. One sister Francis (Robert) McCarthy of Batavia and a sister in law Ann Zalenski of Bethany survive along with several nieces and nephews.

Teresa G. Squires

Teresa G. Squires, 88 of Warsaw, passed away on July 25, 2013 at Eastside Nursing Home in Warsaw. She was born October 8, 1924 in Batavia to the late Sylvester (Mary Petz) George. Mrs. Squires was a retired school teacher having taught in Albion and the former St. Mary’s School in Batavia. She was formerly a member of St. Joseph’s Church in Albion and an enjoyed baking especially cookies. She is preceded in death by her husband John Edwin Squires, son Bernard Squires, brothers Paul, Lawrence, Harold and Francis George, and sisters Florence Reisdorf and Mary George.

Teresa is survived by her sons John (Mary) Squires of Brockport, Gregory (Sandra) Squires, Jeffrey (Sara) Squires all of Prattsburg, daughter Barbara (Joseph) Sanguiliano of Manalapan, NJ, brother Bernard (Mary) George of Batavia, sister Shirley (Thomas) Edbauer of North Tonawanda and 8 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren survive along with many nieces and nephews.

Mary C. Tiberio

Mary C. Tiberio, 93 of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday July 24, 2013 at the Genesee County Nursing Home. She was born on January 27, 1920 in Batavia to the late Felix (Antoinette Parrinello) Marchese. Mrs. Tiberio worked at Genesee Memorial Hospital for many years. She was a lifetime member of St. Mary’s Church and loved playing cards. She is preceded in death by her husband Thomas L. Tiberio; daughters JoAnn Ray, Caroline Tiberio; brothers Joseph, Samuel and Anthony (Josephine) Marchese; grandson Michael Tiberio.

She is survived by her children Anthony (Carolyn) Tiberio of FL; Shirley (Richard) Parmenter of Oakfield;  brother Louis (Joann) Marchese of Batavia; sisters Rose Antinore, Katherine Cianfrini both of Batavia; Sister’s in law Connie (late Joseph) Marchese of CA; Gloria (late Samuel) Marchese of Batavia; Helen Tiberio of Caledonia; Dolores Tiberio of Rochester.  Grandchildren Kelly (Tiberio) Bothe, Corey (Tiberio) LeFevre, Thomas Ray, Eric Ray, Tina Parmenter & Richard Parmenter Jr.  6 great-grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild, along with several nieces and nephews.

John M. Klinkbeil

LeRoy ~ John M. Klinkbeil, age 64, of Lake Street, passed away on Tuesday afternoon (July 16, 2013) at Strong Memorial Hospital.

     He was born August 28, 1948 in Buffalo, a son of the late Julius and Marion Callan  Klinkbeil.                                                                                                                                                           

      John was a social member of the Vietnam Veterans of America and a member of the LeRoy Moose Family Center.  He loved to fish and enjoyed his truck driving job, considering himself to be a “paid tourist”.

     He is survived by his companion of 27 years, Rebecca Pringle of LeRoy, his children; Kerry Smith of FL, Jennifer Ocasio of FL, David (Connie) Klinkbeil of FL, Justin (Shannon) MacFarland of Buffalo and Tyson (Crystal) Klinkbeil of Buffalo along with many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, aunts, uncles and cousins.

     There are no prior calling hours and services will be at the convenience of the family.

Sarah B. Duschen

Sarah B. Duschen, 92, of Batavia, passed away Friday (July 19, 2013) at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

Sarah was born on May 21, 1921 in Buffalo, a daughter of the late Albert and Catherine Johnson Miles. She worked for S.S. Kresge and retired from Doll's Super Duper Market in Corfu. Sarah was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and homemaker. She loved sewing, needlepoint, crocheting and knitting for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sarah was a member of the Indian Falls Methodist Church Senior Citizens.  Her husband Floyd Andrew (Andy) Duschen, passed away July 28, 2001. Sarah was the mother of the late Alvin, Gary and Cody Duschen; sister of the late Albert Henry Miles, William G. Miles, Oliver Miles, Ann Kelley and Frances Miles and grandmother of the late Joseph Samiec.

Sarah is survived by a son, James (Donna) Duschen of Corfu and a daughter, Dorothy Gioia of Batavia; one brother, Robert Miles of Corfu; a sister-in-law, Kathryn Miles of Corfu; 5 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Family and friends may call Saturday, July 27, 2013 from 10 - 11 a.m. in the narthex of the Indian Falls United Methodist Church 7908 Allegheny Road, Corfu. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary. Burial will be in Forest Hill Cemetery, Attica. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family. Nellie A. VanScoy

Mrs. Nellie A. VanScoy, 97, who has resided in Batavia since 1990, died Sunday, July 21, 2013 at the Genesee County Nursing Home.

Mrs. VanScoy was born November 8, 1915 in Newburgh, NY, the daughter of the late Carlton and Mary Ellen  (Sutton) Hall.

A member of the First Presbyterian Church of Batavia as well as First Methodist Church of Newburgh she enjoyed bowling, making ceramics and loved to sing in the choir.  Mrs. VanScoy once sang for Eleanor Roosevelt and was proud to have been in a movie as a child.  

She was the wife of the late Harry G. VanScoy.

Survivors include two sons; David (Charleen) VanScoy of Batavia and Douglas (Gayle) VanScoy of Greenville, SC and a sister, Dorothy Lynch of Poughkeepsie.  She was the grandmother of Shawn (Shannon) VanScoy, Mark (Greta) VanScoy, Jeffrey (Mandy) VanScoy and Laurie (Joseph) Hyink.  Also survived by 11 great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

 Services will be at 10:30 AM, Friday, July 26, 2013 at the First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St., Batavia.  Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 300 E. Main St. or the Salvation Army, 529 East Main St., both  Batavia, NY 14020. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery, Newburgh, NY. Arrangements were completed by the H. E. Turner & Co. CHARLOTTE WILLIAMS CONABLE, 83, July 19, 2013 in Sarasota, FL after a long battle with cancer. Born in Buffalo, daughter of the late Garnet and Charlotte (Seitz) Williams. Graduate of Lafayette High School, Cornell University and George Washington University. Sarasota resident since 2003 with her husband, the late Barber B. Conable, Jr., former WNY Congressman and World Bank President 1986- 1991. Survived by her four children, Anne (Peter Umbras) of Bennington, NY; Jane (Bernard) Schmieder of East Bethany, NY; Emily of White Hall, MD; and Sam of Sarasota, FL; 11 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. Wayne T. Smith

Wayne T. Smith, 58 of Castile, passed away on July 20, 2013 at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester. He was born in Charleston, SC on March 28, 1955 to the late Edward J. Smith
and the late Madeline M. Murphy. Wayne was a longtime member of the Perry Vets Club; Sportsman’s Club and Dom Pulski. He was an avid hunter and fisherman that loved old “classic” movies. Wayne is preceded in death by a sister Kathe Joslyn and brother George Smith.

He is survived by his daughter Patience Smith of WA; sisters Cherol (Gene) Shoup; Marge (Richard) Downs; Madeline Smith; brother Edward (Sue) Smith all of Perry; along with several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Deacon John J. Stone

Deacon John J. Stone, 88, died peacefully after a long illness, Thursday, July 18th with his loving family by his side.  He was born in LeRoy on November 26, 1924 a son of the late Philip and Mary E. Fiorito Stone.

At 18, he joined the Navy and became Torpedo Bomber/Gunner, flying countless missions against the Japanese, taking off and landing on aircraft carriers such as the USS Enterprise, USS Lexington and USS Yorktown.  He earned the Air Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross, Conspicuous Service Medal and also the American Theatre and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre Campaign medals.  After the war, John went to Canisius College where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration.

After college he worked for Doehler-Jarvis Manufacturing in Batavia for twenty six years as an administrator. He also belonged to the local musicians union and played bass fiddle with several area bands such as the Warren Fargo Band and the Mike Ellingham Band.  They entertained for hospitals, nursing homes, schools and played for dances and weddings.

He found a calling to serve the Lord and spent several years at Christ The King seminary where he was ordained a Deacon in 1980.  Through the years he touched the hearts of many with his homilies at weddings, baptisms and funerals.  His greatest passion was that of serving the Lord and that is what he did as a Deacon for thirty- four years.  He served as Chaplin for the Knights of Columbus, St.Joseph’s Sodality and also the Manor House where he resided.  He was one of the oldest surviving members of the American Legion, (Botts/Fiorito Post in LeRoy) for many years.

Deacon John loved to play golf and was considered by many as the world’s greatest Yankee fan.  When his wife Eleanor was alive, they enjoyed vacationing in Hawaii, the Adirondacks and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina where they spent numerous winters.

In addition to John’s service to his country, as an administrator at Doehlers and his many years serving the Lord, he was also a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  He always gave tirelessly of himself to better the lives of his family.  He was a wonderful man, full of love and adoration for his children, grandchildren and great -grandchildren.

We are very proud of his accomplishments and the fact that he played an instrumental role in improving the lives of so many people during his time as a Deacon.   He had a heart most uncommon in that he would go to great lengths to help others.  He was dearly loved by his family and all who knew him.  He will be deeply missed. 

Survivors include his daughter, Deborah (Edward) Manahan of Alexander; son, Douglas (Ernest Fogarty) Stone of Rochester; brother, Donald Stone of Florida; sisters-in-law, Louise Stone of Batavia and Kay Stone of LeRoy; grandchildren, Jeremy (Katie) Manahan of Williamsville and Renee (Rob) Radley of Batavia; great - grandchildren Lucas, Ella and Nolan Radley of Batavia and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of fiftythree years, Eleanor Potwora Stone in 2005.  He was the brother of the late Alfred, Leo and Francis Stone, Helen Merola, Rose Shortino, Nina Guidici and Rita Madalena.

Family and friends may call at Resurrection Parish, St. Joseph Church, on Friday July 26, 2013, from 3 – 7 pm. followed by a Vigil Service by the Diaconate Community.   The Deacons will be fully vested.  The Knights of Columbus will hold a prayer service at 5 pm.  His Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 am Saturday, July 27, 2013, preceded by the Sodality of St. Joseph’s Rosary at 9:30 am.  Entombment with full Military Honors will be at St. Joseph Mausoleum.

MATTHEW L. SZYDLOWSKI

Age 94, of Batavia died peacefully Tuesday morning July 16, 2013 at United Memorial Medical Center. He was born January 5, 1919 in Batavia, NY to the late John & Michaelina (Jackowski) Szydlowski also preceded in death by his adoring wife Henrietta "Henia" Szydlowski in April 2013.

   Mr. Szydlowski was a navigator on a B24 in the United States Air Force during WWII, he was shot down over Austria and was held for many months in a German Prison Camp. His efforts in the war earned him a Purple Heart, POW Medal and a member of the distinct Caterpillar Club. An employee of Dohler-Jarvis a Division of National Lead,  lifelong member, lector and communicant of Sacred Heart R.C. Church, the Holy Name Society and St. Vincent DePaul Society. A Gold Star member of the Polish Falcons of America and local Nest #493, he enjoyed puzzles, woodworking and was a picture framer for many years.

   Surviving is his loving son and daughter-in-law, David (Jill) Szydlowski of Pittsford, beloved "Papa" to Jaime, Carly and Matthew of Pittsford and sister, Joanne Szydlowski of Batavia along with several nieces and nephews.

   Visitation will be from 10-11 AM Saturday July 20, 2013 at the Michael S. Tomaszewski Funeral & Cremation Chapel, LLC 4120 West Main Street Road Batavia, New York 14020 where Funeral Services and Full Military Honors will be presented at 11:00 AM. Entombment will be in St. Joseph's Mausoleum and in lieu of flowers memorials in Matthew's memory are suggested to Ascension Parish.

Anthony J. (DelSordo) Delson Jr.

Age 89, of Batavia, died peacefully Tuesday morning July 16, 2013 at United Memorial Medical Center . He was born May 4, 1924 in Batavia, a son of the late Anthony J. & Mary (Capella) Delson Sr., also preceded in death by his  beloved wife, Florence I. (Schwanke) Delson in 2004 and sister, Lucy Dombrowski.

   Mr. Delson was employed at US Chrome and remained a "fixture" there for 53 years, having just retired in January of 2013. A sergeant in the Army Air Corp. during WWII, member of the VFW Post #1602, avid golfer, bowler, card player and many years ago played semi-pro football in Batavia.

   Surviving is his loving daughter, Linda (late Donald) Palone of Batavia and her daughters, Joanna L. (John N.) Palone-Borrelli with their children, Jacklyn and Nicole D. all of Rochester, Stacy L. (Scott) Palone-Berchou with their children, Samantha N., Jason D. & Joseph M. all of Clarence; loving son, Robert A. (Traci) Delson of San Diego, CA and his sons, Anthony N. and David R. Delson of San Diego, CA; brother, David J. Delson of Batavia and sister, Frances "Babe" Gentile of Batavia along with many nieces, nephews and dear friends

Gerald T. Harding

Pavilion ~ Our Beloved father, Gerald Thomas Harding, age 79, of Fox Place Road, passed away early Wednesday morning (July 17, 2013) at Strong Memorial Hospital surrounded by his loving family.

     Mr. Harding was born May 27, 1934 in LeRoy, a son of the late Edward and Marion Campbell Harding.

     He was a dear dad and grandfather and was known for his love of his children. He was a U.S. Army Veteran and an avid hunter.  One of his biggest passions was racing. He was an avid race car fan and sponsor.

     He is survived by his children; Diana Lynn Schulz of Colorado Springs, Christel Gayhart of LeRoy, Kelly (Dennis) Crowe of Bergen, Edward Harding of Batavia, Richard Leubner of Arkansas, Robert Leubner of LeRoy, Gary Harding of Pavilion and Gerald (Acacia) Harding of Pavilion, a dear cousin, Jacque Reamer of Pavilion, along with 18 adored grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many dear friends.  He was predeceased by his brother, Richard Harding.

     Family and friends may call on Friday, July 19, from 2 ~ 9 PM at the Falcone Family Funeral & Cremation Service Inc., 8700 Lake Road (Rt. 19), LeRoy. Funeral services will be private.  Memorial contributions may be offered to the family, who will organize a sponsorship of a future memorial race in Jerry’s honor.
