Wilma L. Beyer

By Ronald Konieczny
Beyer

Wilma L.  Beyer, 92 of Akron, NY, passed away peacefully on Monday (March 24, 2025) at Wells Hospice Buffalo, Beechwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Amherst, NY.

Wilma was born on February 15, 1933, in Flint, Michigan, as the first-born daughter of the late Arthur W. and Wilhelmina Ruth Thomas Blake. Shortly after her birth, the Blake family moved to Buffalo, where her father worked for General Motors.

Wilma’s mother passed away in 1940, leaving behind Wilma and two younger sisters, Jackie and Ruth Ann. The two eldest girls lived with relatives on the Blake family farm in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, until their father remarried in 1942. The newly blended Blake family included Wilma’s stepmother, Doris, step-siblings Betty Ann and Evan Tyler, and later, a half-sister, Sally.

Attending Amherst High School, she excelled in sports and played the lead role in her school play. Every summer, she visited the family farm in Honesdale. Helping with chores, she herded dairy cows, tended gardens, cooked, sewed, and knitted. Wilma also developed a love for driving and operating tractors, trucks, trailers, boats, and cars. Additionally, she learned to square dance and polka and developed a deep appreciation for nature and the outdoors.

During her junior year of high school, Wilma met and fell in love with Donald Maurer. After graduating, she began training at the Millard Fillmore School of Nursing while Donald worked at General Motors. Donald enlisted in the Army when the Korean War began and was stationed in Germany for two years. Meanwhile, Wilma completed her nursing education. Married in 1955, they welcomed their only daughter, Patricia, in 1956.

Wilma and Don shared a loving marriage enjoying many activities, such as camping, fishing, cross-country skiing, and Buffalo Bills football games. They were both active members of their local volunteer fire company. Wilma served as a longtime president and lifetime member of the North Bailey Ladies Auxiliary. She was also a semi-professional bowler, winning several tournaments.

A devout member of Trinity Old Lutheran Church in Amherst, Wilma sang in the choir. She was known for her natural beauty—tall and slender with a distinctive gray streak in her hair from a young age. She never colored her hair or wore makeup, except for lipstick. She also modeled as a “Mother of the Bride” for Benton’s Bridal Salon in Buffalo, along with other local stores.

Wilma took great pride in her nursing career and maintained her RN license for life. She had a deep interest in health and wellness and was an original participant in the groundbreaking “Women’s Health Initiative” study at the University at Buffalo.

In 1980, Don passed away from pancreatic cancer just one month before the birth of his first grandchild. Wilma cared for him at home with support from the Buffalo Hospice Program. It was a difficult time for her, becoming a widow at such a young age. At the time, she was working as a school nurse at her alma mater, Amherst High School. She kept busy with her job, friends, and family.

A few months later, Wilma was introduced to Dick Beyer, the new wrestling coach at Amherst. They quickly became close friends, attending many school events together. Having been blessed with a second lovethey married in 1983 and built a home in Akron, NY. Dick worked as a physical education teacher and coach for Akron Schools, while also maintaining his career as a professional wrestler; known worldwide as "The Destroyer" and "Doctor X". Wilma fully embraced her new role as "Mrs. Coach" and “Mrs. Destroyer.” They traveled extensively nationally and internationally enjoying new friends, beaches and various outdoor activities.

Wilma was highly recognized as Dick’s strong support as he received numerous awards and honors in both Japan and the United States. Even after retirement, they continued traveling for events and charity endeavors. However, their happiest moments were spent at home, surrounded by friends and family. Their home became a hub for large gatherings, featuring swimming and backyard cookouts, where everyone was treated like family. Wilma continued her gardening expertise and was widely known for her “green thumbs”; able to make anything grow.

Wilma and Dick left a lasting legacy in the Village of Akron and Western New York, dedicated to serving the community and its youth. They were active members of the Akron-Newstead Rotary, Masonic Lodge, Relay for Life, Ilio DiPaolo Scholarship Fund, Akron 1st United Methodist Church, and One Church Akron. The couple was always willing to organize and assist in charity and fundraising events for various community needs. Two highlights were taking youth wrestlers from WNY, for over 20 years, for annual wrestling tournaments in Japan and two Akron HS Swim Teams to Japan for cultural exchange.

Wilma was predeceased by husbands, Donald N. Maurer (1980) and Richard J. Beyer (2019), and her siblings, Betty Ann Stradtman and Evan Tyler.

She is survived by her daughter, Patti Murray (Marc Schrenk) of Eggertsville; stepchildren, Kurt Beyer of Buffalo, Kris (Chris) Jones of Akron, and Richard (Amy) Beyer of Jacksonville, Florida; grandchildren, Lisa (Chris) Bonner, Kelly (Glenn) Friedel, Laurene (Adam) MacTaggart, Brent Schrenk, Garrett Jones, Grace Beyer, Grant Beyer, and Lucy Beyer; great-grandchildren, Charles, Marshall, Selah, Liora, Petra, and Rory; and her sisters, Jacqueline Harten, Ruth Ann Berger, and Sally DeLong. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Charles S. Bartlett

Charles S. Bartlett, 68, of Corfu, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, March 29, 2025 at home.

Charles was born December 31, 1956 in Batavia, N.Y. to the late Walter and Dorothy (Skeet) Bartlett. He graduated from Pembroke High School in 1975. He worked a few different jobs before he found his home working as a machinist for Safran in Lancaster, N.Y. for 45 years until his retirement on December 13, 2024.

He was a loving brother, father, and grandfather and was adored by his entire family. He was a kind and patient man who brought light everywhere he went. He lived life to the fullest and was always willing to help anyone in their time of need.

Nothing made him happier than his grandchildren. He got joy from attending the annual steam show with Dude and Harper Bee, wrestling with the twins on Christmas, or riding in the Annual Bartlett Easter Parade with Chase and Lacey-Rae. And although dessert was not his thing, one of his favorite days of the year was buying a maple ice cream for all his children and grandchildren at the Alexander Steam Show. These are the memories and traditions his family will continue to carry on in his legacy and always remember the wonderful man he was.

He was an Eagle Scout and a lifetime member of Darien Fire Department. He had several hobbies including beekeeping, hunting, farming, going to Bennington Lanes to enjoy the WNY Bluegrass and Old Time Music Association, going out with work friends and helping during maple season, collecting and boiling sap with his son. He loved to socialize and he could always be found spending time with his family and friends. No matter where he went, he was the life of the party and always made a point to talk to everyone. He could be found at any given time with a smile on his face and an appropriately themed earring in his ear. He always had a great story, even if you had heard it 3 times before and even if you were backing out of his driveway while he leaned in the window saying “one more thing”.

James D. "Bimbo" Henry Jr.

By LaVern Falcone

James Daniel Henry Jr., 70, of LeRoy, NY, passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2025, at Unity Hospital in Rochester NY, surrounded by loving family and friends after a long illness. Jim, known as “Bimbo,” to all, was born on January 3, 1955, in Batavia, NY, the son of James Daniel Henry Sr. and Beatrice Angela (Coppini) Henry.
Jim Jr., like his father, Jim Sr, was known for his warm and friendly demeanor, quick wit, desire to help others, fierce loyalty, and always up for fun and laughter. The Henrys had the pleasure of growing up on Myrtle Street in LeRoy, which was full of friendly neighbors, great mentors, fun sports, camaraderie, and daily adventure. “Bimbo” was my father’s nickname growing up when James, Jim, Jimmy, Jim-Bo, etc. manifested into Bimbo! It seemed that everyone had a nickname while growing up in LeRoy! Jim Jr. was honored to have his father’s moniker!
Jim Jr. was a 1973 graduate of LeRoy High, where he played four years of football for the Oatkan Knights in the highly successful Bob Sullivan and Don Santini coaching years. He was also a three-year wrestler for coach Bill Brooks, winning key matches at heavyweight to lead the varsity to their first ten-win season in his senior year.

jim henry

Jim Jr. studied electronic wiring at LHS which led to his fascination of Heath Kits, Scanners, Walkie-Talkies and HAM radios. His garage is a spectacular museum of tinkering. He so enjoyed tearing down and rebuilding anything in sight such as four-wheelers, engines, go-carts, mowers, and light fixtures.
After graduation, “Bimbo” worked 35 years for the Village of LeRoy in the Department of Public Works and the Water Treatment Plant. He married the love of his life in 1976, Bonnie MacIntyre, a kind and loving 1975 grad of Caledonia-Mumford High. Father, Jim Sr., married his Cal-Mum sweetheart, Bea, in 1952, so it seems that great minds think alike!
Jim Sr. brought teenage Jim Jr. to Lime Rock Speedway in the late 60’s and son “Bimbo” simply loved the look, feel, smell, and incredible energy of the venue. Sprint Cars, Quads, Motorcycles, you name it, he loved it! Bimbo had many roles at “The Rock,” and he put his heart and soul into each job. He made numerous friends at the track, life-long friends.
Bimbo and Bonnie were super blessed with a darling daughter, Taryn, in 1984, when they resided at Lake LeRoy. Many fishing tournaments and parties were held on the grounds. Having their daughter there was simply the best for Bimbo and Bonnie. Taryn now has two handsome, talented, and loving sons, James and Killian, which gave Bimbo immense pleasure and pride as he attended their hockey, lacrosse, and soccer contests.

It is very moving to see and read all the hundreds of comments that are filling up the Facebook pages regarding Bimbo’s passing. Bimbo loved LeRoy and many LeRoyans loved and cared about Bimbo. He wasn’t just a resident as he gave freely of his time to the community. He worked for seven years at the LeRoy Volunteer Ambulance (LVA) as a night shift dispatcher. He was a member of the LeRoy Fire Department for fifteen years. He was also a member of the Chemical Hose and the Oatka Fish and Game Club.

Bimbo is survived by his wife of 49 years, Bonnie (nee MacIntyre), daughter Taryn (James Kwiatek) of Batavia, NY, and his beloved grandchildren, James Rachow and Killian Kwiatek. He is survived by brothers, George (Jennifer) of Monkton, VT, Edward (Karen) of Williamsville, NY, Gary (Susan) of Clarence Center, NY and sister, Rebecca (William) Seeley of LeRoy, NY. Also survived by brothers-in-law, James MacIntyre of Killeen, TX, Don (Jennifer) MacIntyre of Hamlin, NY and sister-in-law, Lynda (Donald) Cameron of LeRoy, NY.      There will be no calling hours or funeral.
Celebration of Life, at the convenience of the family, to be announced at a later date.

Joshua S. Gaylord “Joshie”, 46, of Stafford NY died unexpectedly on March 27,2025 despite the heroic measures taken by his son Vinny. He was born February 9,1979, in Rochester NY to Michelle and the late Paul Gaylord.

Family, friends and making memories were Josh’s top priority. He loved being a father and always said he “created his own best friends”. He loved his wife Joyce “his boo” with his whole heart. He had a larger than life personality that made people gravitate to him. Even if you just met him, you felt as if he was your best friend. He was the life of the party and could always bring the crew together. He could always find the silver lining and made people feel like they could accomplish anything. Josh always gave 100% to everything he did. He was a master sushi chef who successfully owned his own business, Yume Sushi for 5yrs. He “flipped” multiple homes and loved transforming them into something beautiful. And most recently, making a new “work family” at Oatka.

Josh is survived by his wife Joyce, children Vinny and Tommy, mother Michelle, in-laws Charlie and Elaine (Smith), Tom Morphet, siblings, Christian Gaylord, Oliver (Karren) Gaylord, Shawn Gaylord, Aaron (Jessica) Gaylord, Samantha (Emmett) Maguire. Aunts, Uncles, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

He is reunited with his father Paul, cousin Michael, uncles- Rocky, Roger, Jerry, David and Philip and Aunt Mary Ellen. They will all celebrate in heaven until we meet again.
