The City of Batavia Police Department is providing free firearm safety kits to local residents while supplies last.
The department in partnership with national Project SafeChild will distribute 1,000 kits, which include a gun lock.
The police headquarters is located at 10 W. Main St. and hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
"We encourage residents to pick up a Project SafeChild safety kit so that they can securely store their firearm," said Chief Randy Baker in a press release. "Each kit contains a safety curriculum and a cable-style gun lock.
"The lock fits on most types of handguns, rifles and shotguns. The goal is to prevent a child or any other unauthorized person from accessing a firearm in your home."

Peter, I agree. While I
Peter, I agree. While I understand the intention, the fact that the majority of people who possess firearms in the home are more than well aware of the safety issues.
I have to say in the whole
I have to say in the whole time Ive lived in Batavia Ive only had to use a gun to use a gun to thwart a potential crime once! What happened was some guy I didnt even know that acording to two sevenish foot tall biker dudes with colors on pulled up in front of my house and got out of a little ford pinto. It looked like something from a circus.I dont even know how they fit in the car! They then pounded on my door like they were on something.I opened the door and they said that someone told them I owed them money for someone they mentioned that I didnt know.I told them I didnt know who they were talking about and that I have kids sleeping and to leave! They walked away and did a circle around my block back in front of my house.I picked up my 9mm (which wasnt loaded)turned on the laser and aimed the gun(unloaded) with the laser pointed toward them.Ive never seen two grown biker dudes run that fast and get into a car bumping their heads on the way and driving a pinto like Dale Earnhardt. It looked like a scene from Barnum and Baileys circus. As Ive said I have kids so I keep my guns locked in a safe.I couldnt live with my self if something happened to one of my three boys because of my neglegence.Parents please legal or not legal and all mine are because im federally licensed collector. Please keep your guns locked up.If you find that you absolutely have to use one to hinder a crime you will be able to get the lock off faster than it takes for the police to get there. And I havent heard of any kids taking guns to school or accidentally shooting them selves when the guns got a lock on it have you?
