Is this what you call a slow
Is this what you call a slow news day....why is this news....
Because I posted it. Why such
Because I posted it.
Why such an inane question?
"When a dog bites a man, that
"When a dog bites a man, that is not news, because it happens so often. But if a man bites a dog, that is news." -- Alfred Harmsworth {Sorry, that quote has been in my head for months, couldn't resist}
Posting scanner calls is RAW news, to some it means nothing, to others it is of interest. Articles are developed news, the same rules apply.
The Batavian does well with both
Howard you take things to
Howard you take things to seriously...Same with all who like to give the thumbs down..You ask people to join the batavian but when they throw a little sarcasm out there you tell them they ask stupid questions...
I have to agree with Howard
I have to agree with Howard on this.
I was at Tim Hortons when this happened, as were a lot of others. I am sure they will be pleased to know how she was doing.
Mark ......since we can't
Mark ......since we can't hear a tone of voice or see facial expressions you need to realize without stipulating that what you posted was sarcastic or a humorous jab. It not likely to to be understood as such.
As for Howard's reaction...honestly if someone questioned your work in your workplace wouldn't you be slightly defensive. Even if they were sarcastic, I know I would make a return sarcastic remark....
Without noting it as a sarcastic remark it was very inane....
Mark, there's no sense of
Mark, there's no sense of sarcasm in it for me. It's a tired and hackneyed question for me. It always draws my ire.
It's also a question that isn't part of our editorial process. We never ever ask, is this news? We ask, is it interesting? I could give a flip whether somebody thinks it's news, or not.
Thanks for asking John; Cindy
Thanks for asking John; Cindy is doing well with no serious injuries. Hopefully if she feels better she’ll meet everyone for coffee tomorrow morning.
nice attitude, Howard. To be
nice attitude, Howard. To be honest, your site has been lacking, lately. Things are written that's heard on the scanner, but RARELY any follow-up stories...just my opinion, so bash away
No bashing from me Dennis...I
No bashing from me Dennis...I agree...
There's been a spate of
There's been a spate of scanner calls that are of interest at the time, but don't lend themselves to the necessity to follow up. I ask a lot of our local agencies and I don't like to bother them for follow up information on items that don't have a lot of substance. I'd rather saving my pestering as much as possible for bigger issues.
With the holidays there also hasn't been much coming out of government and other areas that lead to bigger stories.
News is cyclical and this month has been a thinner cycle. Just know, we're here, paying attention.
Ever heard that no news is
Ever heard that no news is good news? I would much rather read a trivial report from the scanner (not that this was trivial to the person involved) or about snowy owls at the airport than read about shots fired, a home invasion, deadly accident, etc. I'm very grateful for slow news days.
Amen to that Beth, I guess
Amen to that Beth, I guess the early and powerful hit of winter has curbed the activity of the Batavia knucklehead..... I'm sure it'll get busy again when it gets warmer. LOL
This is mainly a news site.
This is mainly a news site.
Accidents are news and when it comes across the scanner, then why not post it? If you don't care about accidents, then skip that article like you would if you were reading a print paper. I don't see why you would bitch about a story being listed when you can skip over it
If you don't like a "slow
If you don't like a "slow news day" sort of story, then find your local news elsewhere. There's always the local paper or WBTA radio. They have the same sources for their news that The Batavian has, but will they allow you to publicly complain about what they print/report? Um...doubt it.
Personally, I LIKE the stories like these. I can read news on paper, online, or on the radio. It's the small town stuff that is more interesting to me. But remember that when there's a story you actually find "newsworthy" that this is the ONLY place you can discuss it with others in real time. The Batavian is my go-to place for local news and I am grateful we have it.
Have a nice new years Howard and Billie, and thank you for another year full of fun, informative, controversial, and thought provoking stories.
Happy New Year, Lori. Thank
Happy New Year, Lori. Thank you.
I have to chuckle when I hear
I have to chuckle when I hear a complaint about a site, tv show, or radio station, turn it off, change the station, or enjoy your misery.
Happy New Year Mark. Unlike
Happy New Year Mark. Unlike Mr Roach I agree with you. Nothing news worthy about this at all. John I am sure the ones that witness this knew she would be okay before this site posted. How many people slip and fall during winter and get hurt? How many times does the News Networks make special reports or reports in general about slip, trips or falls? Not unless it was an high profile figure during a meeting or event. Remember this blog is not real news it is a blog about things that happen in our local community. It is a chat room where we get to share our opinions, thoughts and ideas with each other. Whether we agree or disagree. Beside the news stories on here seem to be the same as "THE DAILY." I like this site the way it is. Leave the news to the professionals.
John W., many people slip and
John W., many people slip and fall, but not everyone has to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
And you make the point that this is also a blog (and it does report real news). You miss the point that you don't have to read every post. To bitch that the owner of the site put a post about something that came over the scanner (real news, even if you don't think it important) was just bitching.
As for the Daily, many come here to get the news now because it is reported faster.
"Leave the news to the
"Leave the news to the professionals"? I'm pretty sure that Billie and Howard ARE professionals. Not to speak for everyone, but I think most of us come here for news, sometimes up to the minute news. I know I live miles away and still come to this site often to read the hometown NEWS.
Agree Beth.
