Police are still trying to determine what caused two cars to collide head on at the intersection of Route 98 and Oak Street at 12:35 p.m.
At the point of impact, a white Lincoln Navigator driven by Ouana Caldwell was westbound on Park Road and Marianne Cupler was eastbound in a late model pickup truck, preparing to turn north onto Oak Street.
Cupler was transported to UMMC by Mercy EMS with minor injuries.
Caldwell initially refused medical attention. About two hours later, Mercy EMS was dispatched to the guest waiting area of the Federal Detention Center to examine a patient complaining of pain related to the accident.
I've actually been hit head
I've actually been hit head on at that same intersection under the same circumstances. This happen to me roughly 4 years ago. I was waiting to turn left(northbound) from park rd(i was going eastbound). A lady blasted through a yellow light going westbound and hit me head on.
If you look at the intersection from a satellite view the left turning lane(from eastbound) is very closely aligned with the oncoming westbound lane. The oncoming lane has to swerve to their right to progress on the correct path. In my case the lady was too busy looking right and left, while she blased through a yellow light, she forgot to look forward in time to swerve to the right.
My accident wasn't nearly as bad as this one however. My hopes and prayers go out to the victims and families of this accident. I'm glad everyone is alive.
Matthew, the way you describe
Matthew, the way you describe the configuration of the street and turn lane reminds me of the times I'm in my little Scion hatchback waiting to turn left onto Main Street at Ellicott by the Upton Monument. If you're in the left most turn lane, and a mighty big rig is throttling down to swing right onto Ellicott, they are actually headed straight at you but for the lane markings, which you pray they are paying attention to.
Those truckers whip around
Those truckers whip around the corner entirely too fast, also, Billie.
I've seen a truck slide into the Texaco Town Yellow Goose on its side because they tried to turn south onto 63 from 20 east and were going way too fast.
