Today's Poll: Should handgun permits be public record?

By Howard B. Owens
Jeff Allen

For millions of handgun owners nationwide, shooting is merely a sport. No hunting, no home protection, no nefarious intentions. They are stored and travel unloaded back and forth to ranges For others, they are an investment, something passed down, or a collectible. Simply put, they are a personal possession, private property and their presence in a home is NO ONES business. As soon as someone can reasonably explain why possession should be public record, I will begin a petition for golf clubs, baseball bats, kitchen knives, and frying pans to be registered and made public record.

Handgun permit holders in NYS are already listed online and have been for years.

This site has been around a LONG time: http://www.paladium.net/usa-farnewyorkstate0000PistolPermit2010Jun_01.p…

I sent Alan Munn an email one year demanding he take down the list and that he was jeopardizing my safety by making the list available. He ignored my request and didn't even bother replying. Like I said already, the list has been circulating for years.

BTW, this list is not up to date and it's not accurate. The incorrect address for me is listed and a few people I know to have permits are not on the list. Alan Munn is making targets of addresses that might not even belong to pistol permit holders.

That list is irresponsible on so many levels. I expect that thousands of current and former police officers and prison gaurds names show up on that list. So now people with an axe to grind against them have an easy means to find where they live. And criminals that steal firearms have a shopping map.

Lists like these are agenda driven, not results driven. They do nothing to "fix" the problem of gun violence. This is a witch hunt, nothing more. Folks that demand lists like these and fear legal firearm owners in their neighborhood are acting irrationally. Your chances of being a victim of gun voilence is smaller than your chances of dying of hypertention or Parkinson's Disease. And your chances of dying at the hands of a legal handgun permit owner are an infinitesimally smaller chance still. This is fear with no basis.

Witch hunt with no redeeming value.

if they are going to make handgun permit information public,i feel they should make drivers licence and vehicle information public....tell me the difference......i should be able to find out all information about a driver from the licence plate number....i will feel safer.....

how about, with a persons address,i can find out how much income they have, what political party they belong to,the names and ages of all family members......

guess i'll vote NO

Often times. people have a tendency to vote yes or no on any given subject by how it affects them or not. In other words; as long as it doesn’t cost them money, affect their rights or privacy, or affect them personally; the to hell with the next guy.

Doug is right but, I think it is wrong and an invasion of one's privacy. By what right does the public need to know what guns I purchased and where I live? They do not, I have not committed a crime therefore It is an invasion of my privacy. It is BS!
