Dog locked in white car at Target

A dog has been locked inside a white Ford Chevy Equinox for at least 10 minutes in the parking lot of Target in Batavia. A Sheriff's deputy is responding.

The vehicle is registered to a person in Darien.

Why do people have to bring their dogs with them in a car in the first place? I have a goldfish as a pet and have never brought it in the car with me.

OMG I didn't respond to this cause I thought it was the same one until I seen white car. One of these $#@! UPS must read the batavian ..Hey you hard simple headed loosers are you enjoying being an animal abuser the law needs to put teeth into it like the dogs teeth in their ass but anyways a $1000 fine might make you remember to leave them home. God Help us all...

Well, folks, I knew what $#@! meant in Scott's comment. It is akin to &*%^, or if you will, ()!$. But the UPS puzzled me. Surely he was not referring to the industrious people at the United Postal Service? Indeed, he was not. Other possibilities, according to the online Urban Dictionary, include "Under Paid Slaves" and "Uninterruptible Power Source," but the likely meaning here is "Useless Piece of ----."

I hope that whoever owns these vehicles and pets are held accountable for this. Leaving children or animals in a vehicle in this heat is totally unacceptable. It's bad enough with the a/c on

Michelle, it has been happening so much around the region that it was covered on the radio tonight. On a day like today, about 87 degrees, the interior of a vehicle hits 105F within 5 minutes of shutting off the car and AC when it's parked in the sun.

@Doug believe me I know. I'm a southern girl (Florida) and this is a story that is constantly in the news down there. For the life of me I can't understand how any parent or pet owner could walk away from a vehicle with anything living left inside. The saddest part is you know that most of those people probably complain that the car is too hot when they climb back in from coming out of the store too but don't understand why it's wrong to leave their child or pet inside while they're in there

Thanks, Michelle, for pointing out the correct maker of the car. I agree with you -- I can't understand the thinking in these cases either. I actually read years ago of a woman leaving her tiny infant in a car in sweltering weather so she could gamble. The baby died. Hey, Doug, do you own a shih-tzu? Do you go shopping with it?

@Billie, no need to thank me on that. I remember the woman (or at least many of them that I have heard/seen/read about over the years) who left an infant to gamble. There was also the mom who was an exotic dancer who left her young children so she could shop for stage outfits, the moms who left their infants in the car sleeping while they danced, while they drank in the bars and many other stories.

There was also recently a story of a woman who broke the window out of a vehicle because a pet was left inside and the woman who owned the pet unbelievably did not press charges. Finally someone with some common sense lol

Billie, I'm a cat guy (3 cats) and they claw my face off if I try to get them into the car. Cats are smarter than dogs any day of the week. I've gone on vacations up to 10 days at a time and all I had to do for the cats was to open a 20lb bag of Iams cat food and leave them a large tub of water that they couldn't tip over. Someone stopped to check on them every couple of days.

When I got home they were doing their cat thing, cleaning their fur, sleeping, loafing, not worrying that I was gone...etc. Try doing that with a dog. The dog will eat ALL of the food the first day, it will be sure to find some way of dumping its water, it will howl all day and night, it will then eat the furniture and crap all over the floor and die. (My cats use a pet door and do their business outside in the flower bed) Cats rule, dogs drool.

HERE I WILL SAY IT AGAIN:
WTF is wrong with people. Leave your animals home. You think they enjoy sitting in a vehicle with minimal air that's a 1,000 degrees. Yeah it maybe 88 degrees outside but in the vehicle it's a hell of alot hotter. How about you sit with them. I bet things would be different. The only way this is going to stop is if something is done to these people. Even 10 min running into a store in this hot weather is not good for an animal. Wake up people. This is the 2nd one yesterday. And i am sure there are many more idiots out there. Authorities need to do something.

Maria, authorities "are" doing something. They respond when called. What else would you like them to do, patrol the parking lots every few minutes looking for animals locked in hot cars?

I don't think a vehicle's temperature reaches 1,000 degrees..lol.

Doug, everything you said about the difference between dogs and cats while you're on vacation is absolutely correct. We have to put Pachuco in the pet hotel when we're away, but our six cats are no trouble -- they just have to have their boxes cleaned regularly and have plenty of food and water.
