Grassroots Report from the Powers Campaign

By Jon Powers

The past couple months have been a tremendous success for the Powers for Congress Campaign in Western New York. Our team of volunteers, the Powers Platoon, is blanketing the district and turning out in large numbers to parades, picnics, canvasses, and phone banks. Check out our team in action in our latest Grassroots Report:

Here are some of our campaign’s major accomplishments from the last 3 months:

·         In late May, we started circulating petitions in order to get our name on the ballot. We are going well above and beyond what's needed and turning in thousands of signatures. Our team is knocking on doors and getting great responses everywhere we go.
·         The AFL-CIO made an early endorsement of our campaign. Usually, the AFL-CIO waits until August to endorse, but realized the opportunity we have in NY-26 and came on board early. I am honored to have the endorsement of the working men and women of the AFL-CIO and look forward to bringing the voice of the middle class back to Congress.
·         The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee recognized the exemplary work of the Powers Platoon by supporting our candidacy and placing us in their "Red to Blue" program. Only 6 races with primaries like ours have been recognized across the country! The program takes the top Democratic campaigns in Republican districts and helps them to victory in November. The DCCC has joined us because of all the hard work our team has done in the past year: gaining the endorsements of the Democratic Committees in all 7 Counties, being the only Democrat to have a labor endorsement, and all the grassroots support we have garnered from the voters in NY-26.
·         With the end of the financial quarter here, we are pleased to announce that had our strongest quarter yet. I am most proud that 75% of our donors have given $50 or less.

The Powers Platoon made a strong showing this July 4th marching in Lockport, Lancaster, Warsaw, and Avon. We watched fireworks in Amherst and went to a picnic in Brockport. There are plenty of photos available on our website at www.powersforcongress.com.

This Saturday, I will be close by, leading the Platoon in the Oatka Festival Parade. We would love for you to join us. Visit www.powersforcongress.com and signup today!

We are working hard for the next 63 days before our September 9 Democratic primary. The Powers Platoon is taking it to the street to prove that together, we have the power to change Washington.

One of the things people may not know about Jon Powers is that he is a very respectful and gracious person. During the run-up to the Stafford Firemen's Parade, Jon extended his hand to a gentleman in the timeless manner of a politician, only to be rebuffed with "I don't do politics" (paraphrasing). Jon replied, "It's not about politics; it's about changing America's direction". Before even a couple of minutes had passed, the reluctant parade-goer heartily returned Jon's handshake and nodded approvingly at Jon's enthusiasm and conviction.

Of course, after that, Jon and the rest of us raced through the downpour to finish the parade route. He ran up on peoples' porches, knocked on car windows, and admitted, "Why not? We can't get any wetter".

Soaked to the kiester (sp), Jon posed for pictures, engaged fair-goers, and spoke to a local pastor for a lengthy period about a number of subjects. For someone who's working to get sent to Washington, he sure seemed comfortable on the Stafford Carnival Grounds.

Here we go again with another soon to be elected politician who will only answer to the unions and not the people who blindly elect them. Look how great the unions are for the Batavia government run schools. Just a few years ago it cost the taxpayers around 16 million to brain wash the kids. This year it will cost the taxpayers 40 million and the population has drop every year. Powers will say anything to get elected, but he will be a green horn in Washington and if he wants any power he has to answer to and listen to Hillary, Teddy, John Kerry and Nancy the Queen Bee if he wants to sit on any committee.

The war on Iraq give us a break, President Bush has done a good job stopping and killing terrorist. We are safer now then we were with the last union supported President of the US. If we have to pull out then why do we sill have troops in Japan and Germany 60 plus years later? The unions don’t care about the average family in America, all they care about is bankrupting the average family into submission to rule the lives. He (Powers) is just another union backed politician that says he cares but when it comes to saving America he and his union buddies want to destroy it.

Actually, Jon Powers proposes funding alternative energy, bringing unions to the table with businesses and local government to mediate real solutions. Jon also knows that fighting the war on terror where there's actually terrorism, we need a sensible, not an irrational policy on Iraq.

Secondly, unions aren't just the problem, its the whole blame the other guy mindset thats killing this area, instead of looking for real solutions some just blame the unions or blame the businesses, we need someone who can lead both ends into real solutions for Western New York. Unions know that Jon can bring them to the table with management. Management knows that Jon can bring them to the table with unions. Thats why Unions and Small Business owners across the district are supporting Jon. On a different note, we can't just "cut taxes" and expect for something magical to to happen, its going to take some incentive and compromise from all ends.

To say that people who care about working families want to "destroy" this country is pretty unfounded, we should be debating the issues not trying to play the blame-game, playing the blame-game has gotten us into this mess.

Remember, as Michael Jordan said, "Some want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen,". Jon Powers is actually going to make it happen.

First off, Clinton, Kennedy and Kerry are in the Senate, Powers is running for Congress. As to rookie status, it sounds like you approve of all the incumbents and the job they've done.
Bush has, by nearly every measure, done an abysmal job of fighting terrorism. Its been determined that all the reasons he used to go to war were wrong. And the tired "the whole world believed the intelligence" only flies with people who wish to deliberately remain ignorant of history and facts. The neo-cons who conned him into starting the war had sent letters as early as 1994, exhorting Clinton to overthrow Saddam. Invading Iraq was a Bush objective waiting for any excuse. Terrorist attacks around the world have increased dramatically since we began our occupation of Iraq.
Using troops in Japan and Korea and Germany to justify a long occupation of Iraq shows a lack of appreciation for, or an ignorance of history. Japan and Germany were nations who surrendered after failing at military expansion. The populations of both were nearly completely homogeneous and their recognized government leaders surrendered unconditionally. The Korean occupation continues as the result of a truce signed by nations. And, additionally, there was a strategic advantage to having bases in those countries to contain Soviet and Chinese expansion. Iraq has been shown to have had little influence on the fundamentalist terrorists and we're no longer fighting an established nation with definable geographic positions, so bases in Iraq will be there only to defend our occupation of Iraq. An amorphous enemy of the kind we're fighting now demands 21st century tactics and strategy, and the comparison to Japan and Germany fails miserably.

Oh yea you are right, I forgot Hitler sign the peace treaty over a beer with Harry Truman and Winston Churchville while the Emperor of Japan drank tea with Chester Nimitz and Eisenhower on board the USS Missouri. Since the attacks on 9/11, there has not been any since President Bush did the right thing by going after these enemy combatants. The union backed democrats screwed themselves by not fighting these countries that try to destroy America, so lets blame Bush. In closing what you are trying to say if Truman left Japan alone after Pearl Harbor the USA would have still won WW2?

Then why is he against drilling here, now, along with looking for new ideas? Becuase the looney left will not let him. We need to do everything at once, not just what the talking points say. Powers already said he will use gov. mandates to tell us what to do and how to do it. I don't need another guy in DC telling me how to run my life. That's part of the problem now. Here's an idea, stop passing all the laws telling us what we can't do, let us do something, and we will!

"Seven to 12 years are estimated to be required from an approval to explore and develop to first production from the ANWR Area. " This is from the Energy Information Administration, the US government's own energy analysts. http://www.eia.doe.gov/pub/oil_gas/petroleum/analysis_publications/arct…

Reading further, they estimate that at the time the oil finally enters the pipeline, it will effectively lower the price of a barrel of oil by 75 cents. Not a gallon of gasoline. A barrel of oil. Additionally, the oil from ANWR is expected to reduce our need for foreign oil by a whopping 3%. For 10 years.

Remember, this isn't "America's" oil. The oil companies will drill on Federal lands, then sell the oil back to us. No one gains more than marginally from this except for the oil companies.

People need to wake up and realize that there is very little to be done to lower gas prices. Developing countries are demanding oil at ever increasing rates. China subsidizes their oil, so there is little incentive for conservation in their rapidly growing economy. Whatever oil we don't use, someone else will snatch it up immediately. So long as we are an oil dependent nation, we will be dependent on foreign oil.

How clear is this becoming to most thinking people? T. Boone Pickens made most of his multi-billion dollar fortune in the oil business. This past Tuesday, he began a campaign of commercials and launched a website (funded by some of his oil billions) to try to get Americans to realize that "we're not gonna drill our way out" of this crisis. http://www.pickensplan.com/ How well informed on the issues do you imagine him to be?
