Today's Poll: Who is your favorite former First Lady?

By Howard B. Owens
Billie Owens

I like crazy people, too, which is why I voted for Rosalyn Carter. Many first ladies were shining examples of goodness for our nation and some are more memorable than others. But I always thought the mild-mannered, genteel Mrs. Carter was a brave soul, and remains so, for taking up the cause of the mentally ill. She helped bring the issue out of the shadows.

The other first lady I admire is "Lady Bird" Johnson (what a Southern moniker that is). I appreciate her enjoyment of beauty and for creating gardens and working to beautify the nation. She's known as the Environmental First Lady. She also championed the Head Start educational program for low-income children.

Eleanor Roosevelt was truly a remarkable First lady in the White House, a champion of women's rights, civil right's and human rights. It was her influence on her husband's administration that brought us Social Security, improved the distribution of food to feed hungry Americans during the "Great Depression", and pushed for greater equality for all Americans.
