Adding your community's news to The Batavian

By Howard B. Owens

Many of you noticed a week or so ago, we added a box on the left side of the site called "Our Towns" and we list links to the towns of Genesee County so you can view news for just those towns.

The links are proving very popular.

If you live in one of those towns and want to add any kind of news about your town to the site, here's how you do it.

  1. You must be a registered users and logged into your account
  2. When logged in, on the left side you will see a link called "Create Content." Click it.
  3. Then click "Blog Entry."
  4. Fill in the title field -- try to use a sentence to describe what you're going to post about.
  5. In the tags field type the name of your town, such as "Bergen" or "Oakfield."
  6. Write your post.

Note:  Step #5 is the key to getting your post to show up on the proper town page.

If we think your post is interesting beyond just your town, we'll add it to The Batavian's home page (front page).

If your post is about some church dinner, government meeting, fund-raising drive, birth or wedding, you can also have it show up on the "Announcements" page by tagging it (using that Tag field) as "announcements."  If the post is also about local sports, tag your post "sports."

What is news? Anything you find interesting and want to share with other people.

Brian Hillabush

Just to add to what Howard said:

I am looking for information on each communities sports. At the Batavian, we do not want to just simply report the scores and let you know who wins all of the games each night - you can get that information at the Democrat & Chronicle, at the Section 5 site or in The Daily News.
Our goal is to inform people about what is going on with the teams; on the practice fields, in the locker rooms and in the communities.
I have been working with some coaches to get information, but athletes and parents involved with the programs are more than welcome to post any information (I would love a weekly update from each school). Just make sure you tag the post "sports" along with your town.
Those that post will obviously see me at some games and practices, where I can feature our great student-athletes with video profiles and interviews.

Recently I had the chance to read one of Mike Ranzenhofer’s flyers. I found it to have blatant lies, misrepresentation and propaganda. The Ranzenhofer Plan , states property tax relief- NOW!
* Double the STAR exemption, providing relief now.
* Cap school property taxes to limit future increases.
* Cut state mandates that cause operating cost of local governments and school districts to soar.

IT'S VERY DISAPIONTED TO SEE THAT MR. RAZENHOFER HASN'T A PLAN OF HIS OWN AND HAS NOT PROVEN LEADERSHIP BUT HAS TAKEN THE PLAN FROM THE NEW YORK STATE SENATE.

ON TUESDAY, MAY 1, 2007 SENATE MAJORITY LEADER JOSEPH L BRUNO SENATE PLAN WOULD DOUBLE SENIOR CITZEN PROPERTY TAX REBATE. THIS BILL WOULD RETURN $200 MILLION TO SENIOR TAXPAYERS

ON FRIDAY, AUGUST 8, 2008 SENATE PASSES PROPERTY TAX CAP LEGISLATION
COMPANION LEGISLATION WILL REDUCE SCHOOL DISTRICTS' COST, PROVIDE MANDATE RELIEF

ON MONDAY, JUNE 16, 2008 SENATE PASSES PLAN TO CUT AND ELIMINATE PROPERTY TAXES NEW YORK STOP TAXING OUR PROPERTY PLAN WOULD EMPOWER SCHOOL DOSTRICTS TO COMPLETELY ELIMINATE SCHOOL PROPERTY TAXES; ALLOW LOCALS TO PUT A TAX CAP IN PLACE.

ALL OF THIS MAY BE SEEN ON http://www.senate.state.ny.us

SHAME ON YOU MR. RANZENHOFER, I WILL CAST A VOTE FOR JOE MESI BECAUSE OF THIS

Philip, quick question, I'm not sure if that last reply I sent went through. Being that I am new to the Batavian, I want to be sure that I am posting correctly. Is this correct, and where do you find the blogs as to what people are saying today. Thanks so much.

Rose Mary: If you're referencing your reply of: "Thank you Philip...", it is posted directly above your previous comment, so yes, it went through fine.

You also asked about posting correctly. For sure, you are.

Now, let's make a quick distinction: You can post a blog or you can post a comment. These here are comments that are appended to other people's blog posts.

As for finding blogs: Most of them appear on our homepage. But some are not and they can be found in several different ways. If you're looking for news about sports, click on the 'Sports' tab near the top of the page. If you want to know what's going on around the county, such as events and programs, click on the 'Announcements' tab. If you're looking for commentary on the bigger world outside Genesee County, click on the 'Nation and World' tab.

If you're looking for a blog by someone in particular, and you know who that person is, you can find them by clicking on the 'People' tab. Once you find the person, there should be a link that brings you to his or her blog posts.

Not all of the blog posts make it to our homepage, though most of them do. Some people simply write more personal blogs, and those are great, but maybe not of as much interest to the broader readership.

Most people have their say via the comments, so I would keep up with those especially.

Any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask. Hope I answered all of them so far.

Philip, I saw the "Thank you" one, but not the latest one, where I was asking you about this. Your directions are GREAT, thanks. Just wanted to be sure. Thank you again for such great directions!

I would like to comment on Alice Kryzan in her race for Congress.
I know Alice from "way back" when I was on the Town of Batavia Town Board. Alice represented the Town in our landfill case against several companies who had polluted the site and were objecting to paying for the cleanup. Without Alice's most competent legal work the Town might have had to pay the costs by itself. During the time we worked with her I found her to be honest, capable and well versed on the issues that we dealt with. I am sure that she is still that person and would highly recommend that people cast their vote for her in November.

Thanks for this. It is always nice to read a first hand account regarding the candidates. I've been leaning toward supporting her. This goes a long way in making up my mind.

PS: Did you go to BHS, sometime around 80,81,82,83? I seem to recall one or more of my children going to school with a Jim Lewis (maybe in band?).
