Photos: Two old barns

By Howard B. Owens

Slow news day. That's not entirely bad, because it gives me a chance to catch up on other work, especially the work related to revenue. Though, I'm sure on any given day, you would rather have the stories.

After all day in the office doing business stuff, I went out and searched around for something to take a picture of, hoping, really, for a good sunset shot. None was forthcoming, so these are the two pictures I did get.

Top barn is on Sprague Road, and bottom is on Upton Road. I think both are still in the Town of Batavia.

Howard,
Great pics loves the old barns. The barn on Sprague Rd is just down the road from and is ownwed by Mrs Gene Wolfley and is in the town of Alexander!
Thanks for the great pictures

I looked for you at the Schumer hearing with the Dept. of Justice and the dairy farmers, today at GCC. Thought for sure you would cover it.
Beautiful pictures.

Bea, just simply failed to put it on my calendar. Didn't even think about it until after it was over. Was kicking myself.

That's okay, the pictures certainly were a great diversion on a day like today.
It just seemed strange. The press sat right behind us and I checked several times to see if you or Billie were there.
The stories, by the farmers, were heart wrenching.

We need to join our dairy farm neighbors and fight for their very survival. My hope is that the DOJ listened to the plight coming from farmer after farmer as they spoke at the forum yesterday and that swift action will be taken before it's too late.

Wal-Mart and Dean foods were mentioned by a few. No surprise. Someone's making all the profits but it's not our neighbors.

Prices are falling again. Action needs to be taken now or the dairy farms that are all around us are going to disappear and with it a very intrinsic part of our rural landscape.

I heard, for the first time, about a farmer who shot his herd and then turned the gun on himself. It made me weep when the farmer from Oswego recounted this horrific tragedy. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/01/23/dean-pierson-dairy-farmer_n_43…

It also made me want to take action. As consumer's and advocates for buying and eating local we have started a facebook page 100 Mile Lifestyle for Genesee County. To support our local dairy neighbors we can simply buy their products in the grocery store. A farmer contributor to the 100 mile lifestyle facebook group informed us about Project 36. The #36 stamped on milk cartons assures consumers that the milk is from New York dairies. I buy only Upstate products so I can support my dairy neighbors, but you can look for that stamp on all milk cartons.

Howard,
It's nice that you can get a "quiet" day once in awhile. I love the sky in the 1st pic! Is that a bat house on the fence? I see them alot & have always wondered.

Gabor & Bea, it'll say something like " pkg'd & proc. at plant # 36-xxxx" on the label. Each state has a number as does each plant. You can get the info from the FDA's website.
