Rollover accident on westbound Thruway

A one-vehicle rollover accident is reported on the westbound Thruway at mile marker 396. East Pembroke fire and Mercy medics are responding.

UPDATE 3:30 p.m.: There are reports of entrapment.

UPDATE 3:39 p.m.: Mercy Flight #7 is called to the scene -- availability is checked.

UPDATE 3:44 p.m.: Town of Batavia Engine 24 just arrived, too.

UPDATE 3:53: Two ambulances will be needed.

UPDATE 4:21 p.m.: Three children are being transported to Women & Children's Hospital in Buffalo. The assignment is back in service.

Vehicle crashes into guard rail on eastbound Thruway, lands on its side, unknown injuries

A vehicle has struck a guard rail on the eastbound Thruway, unknown injuries. It is on its side. The first caller to dispatch said it was a tractor-trailer. The second caller thought it was a pickup truck hauling a camper. Town of Batavia fire and Mercy medics are responding. The mile marker is 385.

UPDATE 2:03 p.m.: A responder says there are no injuries, but the accident is blocking two lanes of traffic, which will have to be routed through the passing lane.

Benefit for cancer victim to be held at American Legion Post in Attica on Aug. 16

There will be a benefit for cancer victim Tim Dick at American Legion Post #734 in Attica from 2 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16. It's at the corner of Market and West Avenue.

The event is being held by his friends at p.w. minor, shoemakers based in Batavia.

There will be entertainment by Elvis impersonator Dutch Derby from 3 to 5 p.m., a concession stand, bake sale, 50/50 raffle and Chinese auction. Raffle items include tickets to Disney World, an 18-speed tandem bike, and lots of baskets.

Tim was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome in 2010 and he goes to Roswell Park Cancer Institute every month for five days of chemotherapy. The only cure is a bone marrow transplant, without which he faces years of chemo.

He has been out of work since 1989 due to an accident that compressed three disks in his neck. His wife just lost her job.

Life has not been good to them so we are reaching out to the community to help this family get through a very tough time.

Tim is a husband, father, grandpa and a friend to anyone. Please join us in this benefit to help raise money to get Tim the help he needs and help with the medical bills.

Warrior Resource and Engagement Summit for post-9/11 vets to be held in Cheektowaga

A Warrior Resource and Engagement Summit featuring programs and services available to post-9/11 veterans will be held in Cheektowaga on Saturday, Aug. 23.

Time is 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., with breakfast and lunch provided, at the Hilton Garden Inn, located at 4201 Genesee St.

Various agencies will be on hand to provide information and services for warriors and their families. Presentations will be conducted throughout the day.

The summit is being presented by the Wounded Warrior Project and Veternas One-stop Center of WNY.

The Genesee County Women's Republican Club and the Genesee County Republican Committee will be hosting a meet and greet with Republican Gubernatorial Candidate Rob Astorino on Tuesday, Aug. 12th at the Batavia Downs Clubhouse, 8315 Park Road, Batavia.

Time is 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Cost is $10 per person with tickets available at the door and each person will receive $25 voucher for free play. Hors d'oeuvres and cash bar will be available. Everyone is welcome to attend!

Today's the deadline to RSVP for Kiwanis Club's Night at the Ballpark party under tent at Dwyer

Kenneth R. Geedy

Kenneth R. Geedy, age 74, passed away at Englewood Hospital in Florida on August 8th 2014. He was born in Castile PA. Mr. Geedy resided in Castile NY on Silver Lake and spent winters at his Florida home in Englewood. Mr. Geedy worked in the carpet installation business his entire adult life. He was an Army veteran.

He is survived by his wife Karen M. Geedy and children, Kenneth (Terry) Geedy, of Wilmington NC, Wade (Connie) Geedy, of East Bethany NY, Bryan (Amy) Geedy of Castile NY, Scherina (Todd) Beam of Shippensburg PA, step children, Jeffrey (Amy) Kramarz, of Silver Lake NY and Kenneth (Becky) Kramarz of Stafford NY and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at Wyoming Cemetery in Wyoming NY at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Cancer Society.

Five people hurt in westbound Thruway crash

An accident with five injured people is reported on the westbound Thruway at mile marker 399.9.

Pembroke and Indian Fall fire departments and Mercy medics are responding.

UPDATE 7:01 p.m.: Traffic is backed up as a result of the accident. At least four of the occupants are said to be probable sign-offs.

UPDATE 7:22 p.m.: One child is being transported to Women and Children's Hospital in Buffalo. The other medics are back in service.

Youths said to be breaking into cars on Mill Street in the city

Three youths about 12 to 15 years old are reportedly breaking into vehicles on Mills Street in the City. Batavia PD is responding. One of the youths is said to be wearing a yellow shirt.

UPDATE 5:44 p.m.: Two are in custody.

Mental Health Association presents free seminar by Sammy Violente, who recovered from OCD

The Mental Health Association in Genesee County will present an amazing recovery story on Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the City Church Generation Center on Center Street Downtown.

Sammy Violente, a highly sought-after inspirational speaker, with more than 1,200 workshops and seminars to his credit, will share his mental health challenge and how he recovered from it.

There is no cost at attend.

Violente was a successful investment broker for more than 20 years, earning more than $100,000 annually. Then he struggled with a major mental health problem -- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, often called OCD.

Through his incredible recovery journey, he has found his true purpose and ultimate passion in life.

He represents true hope and inspiration for peers throughout WNY, helping people believe in their own recovery.

Meet some of these fascinating animals in person with Zoo herpetologists. Learn about the natural history of the Eastern Massasauga rattlesnake, among other reptile species found in the swamp, as well as what to do if you encounter one!

Bergen Swamp Preservation Society trustees will also be on hand to answer any questions about the swamp’s special flora, fauna and geology.

The Gillam Grant Community Center is located at 6966 W. Bergen Road in Bergen.

D Andre J. Cramer, 15, is a runaway - have you seen him?

D Andre J. Cramer, 15, is a runaway from Batavia and police believe he is in the local area.

He is 5'6" tall, 145 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes, and the missing child flier says he is of mixed race (black/white).

D Andre was last seen on Monday, Aug. 4, wearing a dark gray Nike shirt, tan shorts, gray and white sneakers and a baseball cap.

He may go by the names "Dre" or "D."

A two-car accident, unknown injuries, is reported at the intersection of Bank Street and Washington Avenue. It is not blocking traffic. City fire and Mercy medics responding.

UPDATE 7:12 p.m.: No one was injured in the collision, caused by one vehicle's brake failure.
