Tompkins Insurance Agencies named among top 100 agencies in nation five years in a row

Tompkins Insurance Agencies has been named among the Top 100 largest independent property/casualty agency in the nation by Insurance Journal. This is Tompkins Insurance Agencies’ fifth consecutive appearance on Insurance Journal’s top 100 list, with a 2019 ranking of 87th largest.
Agencies included on Insurance Journal’s top 100 list are ranked by total property/casualty agency revenue for 2018 and comprises only those agencies whose business is primarily retail, not wholesale. This year’s report was published in the Aug. 5 issue.

Tompkins Insurance makes donation to Michael Napoleone Memorial Foundation

Tompkins Insurance Agencies and The Selective Insurance Group Foundation joined forces to support the Michael Napoleone Memorial Foundation.
The Michael Napoleone Memorial Foundation was established in 2007 in memory of Michael C. Napoleone, the 8-year-old son of Mark and Laurie Napoleone from Batavia, who died from Burkitts Lymphoma/Leukemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer.
During Michael's illness, the community rallied around the family to assist with food, gas, medical bills and other necessities. The not-for-profit foundation was created to give back to those who cared, to give forward to those in need, and to support research efforts in finding a cure for childhood cancer.
“The Michael Napoleone Memorial Foundation is a special organization, and its commitment to supporting those in need in our community is inspiring,” said David S. Boyce, president and CEO, Tompkins Insurance Agencies. “We are privileged to show our support through this donation.”
The $300 donation from Tompkins Insurance Agencies was matched by a $300 grant from The Selective Insurance Group Foundation. The Selective Insurance Group Foundation is a philanthropic affiliate of Selective Insurance Group, Inc.

Tompkins Insurance assistant VP in Batavia joins the company's Brockport office

Tompkins Insurance Agencies Inc. has added a second full-time staff member to its newly opened office in Brockport.
Kyle Kurkowski, assistant vice president/account executive previously based in the company’s Batavia office, has joined the new office located at 4675 Lake Road.
Kurkowski has been with Tompkins Insurance Agencies since 2010, and has extensive experience supporting the company’s offices across Western New York. Licensed in New York for both personal and commercial lines of insurance, he is responsible for focusing on those particular insurance needs, as well as for new business development.
Active in the community, Kurkowski is on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity in Genesee County, and is a Lions Club member. He is a graduate of SUNY Brockport, with a bachelor’s degree in business management.
The Tompkins Insurance Agencies Brockport office provides service to more than 500 customers in the area. The new office was established in a convenient, central location in order to support its customers in the area and the entire community.

Tompkins acquires Shepard, Maxwell & Hale Insurance

Tompkins Financial Corporation has announced the acquisition of Shepard, Maxwell & Hale Insurance by Tompkins Insurance Agencies, Inc., an affiliate of the financial corporation. The acquisition was effective Jan. 1.
“We are happy to continue to grow our business in Batavia and serve our neighbors through this expansion,” said David S. Boyce, president and CEO of Tompkins Insurance.
The change is a win-win for customers, Boyce said.
“In addition to continuing to receive personal attention from local insurance professionals who place a high value on customer service, customers will have 'one-stop shopping' access to the comprehensive array of financial solutions offered by our affiliation with Tompkins Bank of Castile and Tompkins Financial Advisors,” Boyce said.
According to Boyce, Daniel G. Hale and Stephen S. Maxwell, will remain with the agency. Most current employees will be retained in the merger and will continue to service accounts. The Batavia location of Shepard, Maxwell & Hale will close and move operations to the Tompkins Financial Center at 90 Main St. on or about Feb. 1. The Hamlin office will continue to operate at its current location for the time being.
Effective Feb. 1, clients of Shepard, Maxell & Hale may receive service at any of the 28 locations throughout New York and Pennsylvania, including the 16 locations in Western New York.
Tompkins Insurance serves 30,000 personal insurance customers and 7,600 commercial insurance customers, making it the third largest commercial insurance firm in the Rochester area and the 82nd largest agency in the country. The acquisition will add the approximately 4,000 Shepard, Maxwell and Hale accounts to its customer base.
Established in 1957, Shepard, Maxwell & Hale has a long history of serving western New York through its two offices in Batavia and Hamlin. The merger with Tompkins Insurance makes sense for customers, according to Hale.

When workers from Tompkins Insurance move into their new second-floor offices at Main and Center, they will have Doug Rebmann to thank for the bit of extra sunlight spilling into their space.
Rebmann has been working this week cutting through masonry to create two new window openings as part of extensive renovations to the second floor.
Tompkins expects to move its customer service center to the location in mid-September.

Tompkins acquiring building at Main and Center to expand customer service center
It seems hard to believe, but Tompkins Insurance has outgrown its space in the Bank of Castile building at 90 Main St., Batavia, according to Executive VP David Boyce.
Boyce confirmed this afternoon that Tompkins is in the process of acquiring the two-story commercial building at the corner of Main and Center streets with the intention of expanding its call center in that location.
"We have had great success in the bank building across the street, but I didn't think we would outgrow it in nine years," Boyce said. "I guess that was a little short-sighted on my part and Jim Fulmer's, but we've had great success hiring great people from the area."
The call center, Boyce said, is a "care center" in Tompkins vernacular. It's where customer service reps field incoming phone calls from the company's 36,000 private insurance clients.
Tompkins is acquiring the building from Ken Mistler, who owns as many as 10 Downtown properties. Its primary tenants are both on the first floor -- WBTA AM-1490 and Optique Optical.
Boyce said he would defer for the time being in sharing the purchase price but said the company will be making a significant investment in renovating the second floor of the structure.
The property at 113 Main St., is assessed at $325,000.
Boyce said the company is likely to apply to Genesee County Economic Development Center for a sales tax exemption on the building renovations and a PILOT on any increase in accessed value.
Tompkins in running to raise money for local United Way

Based on applications submitted by Safeco agents, Cecere’s selection to this group of heroes has earned his favorite local charity, the United Way of Genesee County, a $5,000 charitable donation from Safeco.
But that’s not all. … and you can help! In a nationwide contest to determine which local hero can get the most votes, two of these 12 will win even more for the charity of their choice. When the voting is over on Dec. 15, the hero with the most votes will receive an additional $10,000 from Safeco Insurance for the nonprofit he or she supports! The charity supported by the runner-up gets $5,000.

Tompkins becomes new health insurance provider for Genesee County Chamber

The Genesee County Chamber of Commerce has for some time been concerned with rising medical insurance premium costs and the impact they have on the small business community. In order to better serve members that provide employee benefits, the chamber is pleased to announce that it has entered into a strategic partnership with Tompkins Insurance Agencies to provide health insurance programs for its members.
Tompkins Insurance will now be the health insurance provider for the chamber, a move that will immediately reduce health insurance costs for most members by eliminating service fees. This partnership also adds flexibility in making premium payments, as well as offering a wider variety of policies from which to choose.

Meet Joseph Teresi, Geneseean of the Year
This is our fifth and final installment of stories on the 2010 Genesee County Chamber of Commerce awards winners. The awards will be presented at a dinner tomorrow evening at the Clarion Hotel.
Among the many good works that 2010 Geneseean of the Year Joe Teresi has been active in over the years is the Challenger Sports program.
His involvement began when a local woman came to him with an idea for a program serving kids with special needs, giving them a chance to play sports, but wondering how to insure those activities. As vice president of Tompkins Insurance, he might have the answer.
His plan, rather than burdening the upstart program with its own policy, was to get it under the umbrella of the YMCA.
With that insight, one of Genesee County's most enduring and endearing community activities was born.
Teresi said that seeing the joy on the faces of the kids in the Challenger program is reward enough for the volunteer work that he does, but he’s had to find the best way to balance nonprofit work with his career.
“Sometimes, I’m able to mix the two like with the Challenger Sports,” he said.
But other times, Teresi just donates his extra time to a cause he feels is worthy.
“Being able to give an organization 100 percent of my effort is great,” he explained. “But one thing about volunteering is sometimes the same thing gets old and when that happens, you’re ready to move on to the next challenge.”
Teresi has been an officer and director on the Genesee and Wyoming counties YMCA board and his knowledge of the organization was crucial when he helped found Challenger Sports.
According to Teresi, a lot of things in his life have led him toward volunteerism.
“It’s been instilled in me -- – probably through my parents, high school at Notre Dame where they make community service a big part, and also through my company here,” Teresi said as he sat in his office at Tompkins Insurance.
“We get so much from the community that we make it a big point for all of our employees to give back to the communities where we live and serve – both with some money if they can, but more importantly with their time and effort.”
But Teresi doesn’t volunteer his time just because it’s encouraged at work.
“It’s the smiles,” he said.
“For Christmas dinner this year we served over 300 people and probably over 100 of them were kids…seeing the smiles on their faces when they got not only a good meal, but when they received their present and had a taste of Christmas that they might not have had a full taste of before.”
Teresi worked with the Lions Club of Batavia for years to make a free Christmas dinner possible to those who might need it. He explained that his whole family gets involved and it’s a special time for each one of them.
“The Lions Club does a lot of good for the community that goes unnoticed and it was really my beginning of giving back as an adult,” Teresi said.
He thanked Rocco Della Penna for introducing him to the Lions Club, and the Genesee County Chamber of Commerce for choosing to honor him this year -- along with Rick Mancuso and Shelly Fallitico for nominating him – especially because being named Geneseean of the Year came as a surprise.
“I was in shock and awe,” he admitted.
“Then I realized that it would be a great thing to be recognized for some of the work over the past few years, but there are many other people who do good work that often go unnoticed."
Tompkins Insurance and Selective Group donate to crisis hotline
Tompkins Insurance Agencies, Inc., and The Selective Group Foundation joined forces to support the positive efforts of RAP (Regional Action Phone, Inc.) in Genesee, Orleans and Wyoming Counties through a $1,000 grant.
“We strongly support and believe in the programs this organization provides for our neighbors and customers in our communities” said David Boyce, Tompkins Insurance president and CEO.
The grant represents a $500 donation from Tompkins Insurance Agencies, Inc., matched by a $500 grant from The Selective Group Foundation.
“The matching grant program allows us to partner with our agents to support the needs of the communities in which we serve and operate,” said Tony Albanese, Selective’s senior vice president, bonds, flood and agency development.
RAP is a private, nonprofit United Way agency started in 1986 with a crisis-hotline service. The agency’s services have grown to include crisis intervention, suicide prevention, referrals to support agencies, food pantry clearinghouse, education, outreach, and relay services to connect callers to agencies when immediate help is needed in times of crisis.
