Update on The Batavian and our ad server

By Howard B. Owens

We are pretty close to getting the new ad server running properly. There are some details to clear up today to make sure all the ads are displaying properly, but the main work is done.

This virus crisis was very stressful and I want to thank all of the readers and local business owners who were so patient and understanding over the past week. We didn't get a single angry phone call or e-mail; nobody accosted me in the street. Everywhere I went people were more curious than upset with the situation. Billie and Lisa and I are very thankful for that understanding response.

Added bonus: We now know we are using a more secure ad server, but here's a benefit I didn't anticipate -- the new ad server seems to be much, much faster. At least for me, even on my iPhone, the site seems to download much faster than it did with the previous ad server. I hope you're noticing a difference, too.

The other thing Billie and Lisa and I are very thankful for is the "Spirit of Downtown" award we received yesterday from the Downtown Improvement District. We're feeling very honored to be recognized by the BID for our work with The Batavian.

And thank you to Dan Fischer of WBTA for his kind words during yesterday's presentation.

As I said yesterday, we feel very fortunate to have been so warmly accepted by the people of Genesee County in just a few short years (The Batavian's fifth-year anniversary is Wednesday). Thank you all -- readers and local business owners -- for your support of The Batavian.

Status update on our ad server

By Howard B. Owens

From the reports I'm getting from the people doing the work, we remain on track to have the new ad server up and running tomorrow.

Thank you to everybody for your patience and understanding during the past few days.

For readers, this is a great time for you to patronize our sponsors and let them know why you're there. I posted a list yesterday and there is a list on the left side of the page.

Here's a hint for sponsors of what's coming with the new server: If you choose the feature, you'll be able to modify your ad with your special deals in real time from your own computer and have the changes appear immediately on The Batavian.

So, we'll have not only a more secure ad server, but one that offers more services.

Please support the local businesses that support The Batavian

By Howard B. Owens

As it stands, we're still looking at Friday morning before we have our new ad server operational.  If you missed the previous post about our old server being hacked, click here.

Below is a list of all our current sponsors. They are all being incredibily understanding of the situation. These are the local businesses that make The Batavian possible. If you enjoy The Batavian, please patronize these businesses and let them know you saw them mentioned on The Batavian.

Sponsored Post: Batavia Roof Cleaning. What's Eating Your Roof?

By Lisa Ace

Spring is here at last! When you step back and ponder your summer projects, look at your roof.

  1. Does your roof look dirty?
  2. Have black streaks?
  3. Is there moss appearing?

Unsightly black stains or streaks on asphalt shingles are caused by a hearty form of airborne algae called Gloeocapsa Magma. The algae feeds on the crushed limestone that is used in asphalt shingles. Rain spreads the algae down the roof, causing the black streaks. Shade and moisture encourage this growth, usually on a north-facing or shaded part of a roof. This is why you may only notice it on parts of the roof.

These streaks are not only unsightly, ruining the curb appeal of your home, but can cause the shingles to fail prematurely. The algae and moss cause the shingles to absorb heat, which is one of the major causes of shingle failure. Also the roots tend to grow up under the leading edge of the shingles where it stays moist the longest. These roots can actually break the seal of the shingle leaving it more suseptable to wind damage.

If your roof is otherwise in good condition the algae and moss can be killed and gently removed using our low-pressure chemical cleaning. Never use high pressure on a roof, as it will damage it and may even void your warranty. Companies like Owens Corning, GAF, and also the Shingle Manufacturers Association recommend a low-pressure chemical application using certain cleaners to restore shingles blighted by roof algae.

Batavia Roof Cleaning offers safe low-pressure roof and exterior cleaning with immediate stunning results guaranteed! Visit us online and check out the gallery of before and after pictures! www.RoofCleaningBatavia.comGive us a call today for more information 585-762-9075.

Sponsored Post: WNY Fireplace Outlet Now Offers THE BIG GREEN EGG!

By Lisa Ace

Widely acclaimed as the original American-designed ceramic cooker, the Big Green Egg was derived from an ancient clay cooking device known as a “kamado”. Originally a clay vessel with a lid, today’s EGG® is a modern ceramic marvel known for producing amazing culinary results for novice and experts alike for over thirty years!

Often copied, never matched … there is only one, original Big Green Egg – The Ultimate Cooking Experience!

Grill | Sear the perfect steaks, pork chops or burgers on the EGG. High temperature “steak house” grilling – even at 750º F / 400º C – is quick and easy! Using the two dampers for accurate control, you can lower the heat to a more moderate temperature for other grilled foods. Fish and seafood turn out moist and tender with a flavor-packed crust unmatched by other grills.

Oven | Using the indirect cooking method with a Plate Setter, the Big Green Egg bakes bread, pizza, casseroles, cobblers and pies better than your kitchen oven … you may never cook indoors again! The Big Green Egg retains heat and moisture so well that foods don’t dry out! Poultry, lamb, beef and vegetables are naturally tastier because the juices and flavors stay locked inside.

Smoker | The insulating ceramics of the Big Green Egg allow you to precisely control the temperature even at low heat. A controllable 200 to 350°F / 93 to 177°C gives succulent results with turkey, ham, lamb, chicken, ribs or any of your favorite cuts, infusing them with the aromatic wood smoke flavor. Want to slow cook at low heat for sixteen to eighteen hours … no problem!

The Only Outdoor Cooker You Will Ever Need!

Which EGG fits your needs? The Big Green Egg stands alone as the most versatile barbecue or outdoor cooking product on the market, with more capabilities than all other conventional cookers combined. From appetizers to entrees to desserts, the Big Green Egg will exceed all of your expectations for culinary perfection … and with five convenient sizes to choose from, there is a Big Green Egg to fit any lifestyle!

By Lisa Ace

THANK YOU BATAVIA!

Thank you for being a great community to live in and do business in. And thanks to all those who help us to better serve our clients.

If not for the great service of the Post Office, the banks, the brokers and the attorneys who help us with our clients, and the police who watch out for us late at night, and the DPW for treating our street like their street, and the restaurants for keeping us fed and smiling, and our business neighbors for helping and caring, we wouldn’t be successful.

Especially, thank you to each and every client for allowing us to serve you.

Batavia is a GREAT place to live and work.

We are proud to be Batavians!

Sponsored Post: Mark Lewis Agency - Tips for Burglary Prevention!

By Lisa Ace

Here are some tips on burglary prevention for both inside and outside of your home:

Inside the House

  • Set timers on interior lights: This goes a long way in deterring burglars, who often look for crimes of opportunity. Don't allow your house to appear as if no one is home.
  • No status updates: Never broadcast your location on Facebook or Twitter. Even if you think that it's only your friends or colleagues viewing your online profile, it's safest not to leave any sort of opening for a possible burglar.
  • Alert alarm company: If you have an automatic security system in place, call your representative, announcing you'll be away from home for an extended period of time. Make sure the alarm is set properly when you leave.
  • Secure valuables: If you don't already have your jewelry or other valuables in a safe deposit box, now might be the time to do so. Doing this also ensures that you don't leave out anything valuable in plain sight that a burglar might be able to see from a window.
  • Lock all doors and windows: It might seem obvious, but double-check just to be sure.
Outside the House
  • Arrange for lawn care: Have your landscaping tended to by a friendly neighbor or local service. Before you leave, trim tree branches that might allow access to a climbing burglar.
  • Newspaper and mail: Stop mail and newspaper deliveries, or have them regularly picked up by a neighbor. Again, you don't want to easily clue in a burglar to your absence by the mounting newspapers on your doorstep.
  • Exterior lighting: Set these lights on timers as well, to deter burglars.
  • Don't leave spare keys outdoors: Collect any hidden spare keys from around the exterior of your home. Remember, burglars know the most popular hiding places, like beneath mats and in potted plants.
  • Lock up garage: Even if there is no entrance to your house from the garage, there's still a chance for numerous things to be stolen. Secure the door and any entrances to the garage.

Join The Batavian Club before April 3 and receive a free T-shirt

By Howard B. Owens

There've always been two great reasons to join The Batavian Club:

  • You're helping to support local journalism that serves your local community;
  • You'll receive more than $300 in money-saving gift certificates to help you support local businesses.

For a limited time, there's another good reason: You will receive a free, limited edition T-shirt from your favorite local news site. The shirt was custom designed exclusively for The Batavian by Brian and Beth Kemp of T-Shirts Etc., 111 Main St., Batavia.

We're going to offer these shirts in two stages: a free T-shirt for new members who join before 5 p.m., April 3; and, later, at a discounted rate for existing members.

Why the delay for existing members? Because technically, we need a "certificate of authority" to collect sales tax on the shirts, and it will be at least 20 days before we receive that from NYS. When The Batavian has the certificate, members will be able to buy shirts (as many as they like) for $9 each (plus tax and $5 for shipping (or avoid the shipping cost and pick up your shirts at T-Shirts Etc.). Non-members will be able to buy the shirts at that time for $20 each (plus tax and shipping).

For new members, shirts will be available for pick up (pick up only, no shipping) on or about April 17.

Once all members have had a chance to buy shirts, the offer will be discontinued and this particular shirt will no longer be available for purchase.

Use the PayPal buttons below.

Or, you can phone in your credit card number and details to (585) 250-4118 during normal business hours, Monday thru Thursday.
