Our work will consist tearing out drywall, insulation, flooring and anything else that was damaged by the water. The community that we will be going to got power back just over two weeks ago. The need is still very great with very few people able to live in their homes.

We are looking for donation: Ensure, water, baby food, baby formula, diapers, small bags of pet food, winter hats, winter gloves/mittens, scarves, sneakers, winter boots, new winter socks, coats, jackets, new blankets, hand sanitizer, large heavy-duty garbage bags, dish soap, paper towels, toilet paper, cleaning gloves, face masks, Lysol disinfectant, Clorox wipes, bleach, mops and pails.

Beacuse it is the Christmas season we are also asking for homemade Christmas cookies. These cookies will be dropped off at the volunteer fire department so that they may hand them out. These people have lost everything!

Chicken Bar-B-Q

By Royal Rangers

This Sunday May 2nd, the Royal Rangers, a boys scouting group, will be having our annual chicken Bar-B-Q. We will be having it a Clor's on West Main Street, at the intersection of Lewiston Road and West Main Street. We will begin selling the dinner at 1100am and go until they are sold out. The dinner are $8.00 and include the chicken, salt potatoes and mac salad.

The money that we raise will help pay for camp out. We have around 50 boys in our group and about 30 of them can not afford to pay for the camp out. As long as the boy has behaved themself, and show an interest in Rangers we will pay for them to go on camp out. To help with sending these boys, Rangers has had many partners in the community. I would like to take this time to thank, the VFW, Kiwanis, Batavia Police Benevolent Association, the Genesee County Deputy Sheriff's Association, the Genesee County Sheriff's employee Association, City of Batavia Firefighters Association, Pauly's Pizza, Next Level Fitness, Turnbull's Heating, The Batavia Assembly of God, the residents of Bethany, and the Tonawanda Valley Federal Credit Union.

I would like to take this time to thank those who have supported the Royal Rangers in 2009.  Kiwanis, City of Batavia Police Benevolent Association, Genesee County Deputy Sheriff's Association, Sheriff's Employee Association, City of Batavia Fire Fighter Association, VFW, Salvation Army, Oliver's Candy, Tonawanda Valley Federal Credit Union, Batavia Assembly of God, Chlor's and all of you who bought candy bars, chicken barbeque's and supported the marathon fundraiser.  It is because of you that we were able to send so many of the boys to camps and to leadership training.

For those of you who may not know who we are I will give a little history of our group.  We are an international group that started in 1962.  Our outpost was started in 1964.  Over the past few years we have been involved in leadership.  Our goal is to have every boy who is involved in our group go through the leadership camps.  In these camps the boys are taught how to lead and more importantly how to be lead.  Each camp is four days long.  They are very hands on.  The boys are taught all different life skills.  Each camp cost $85.00.  About 2/3rd's of our group come from low income families, and can not afford to go to the campouts or the leadership training.  We have the candy bar sale and the marathon fundraiser so the boys can raise money to go on the campouts.  I then ask for donations to send the boys to the leadership camps.  This year alone we were able to send eight boys to leadership camps.

If you would like to support a great program that is building the future leaders of this community you can send a check to the Royal Rangers, 24 North Spruce Street, Batavia New York 14020.  In the memo section please writer "Boys Leadership".  This will insure that 100% of the money goes to the boys.  If you have any questions about this program please call 585-343-8521, between 830am and 330pm.

We start the program back up in September and would love to see some new faces.  If your son or you know of a boy who loves the outdoors, come and join us on Wednesdays and 700pm at the Batavia Assembly of God church at 24 North Spruce Street.  We have some exciting events plained for the second half of the year.

I encourage all the parents who's boys are in the program to post a comment.

Det. Crossett runs first marathon to benefit youth group

By Howard B. Owens

Batavia Police Youth Det. Todd Crossett completed his first marathon May 25 in 4 hours and 4 minutes, and it was for a worthy cause.

Crossett ran into the Buffalo Marathon to raise funds for the Royal Rangers, a scouting group of 30 boys supervised by Crossett.

He raised $400, which will help boys participation in the Royal Rangers.  Many would not be able to attend camp outs without the funds, according to a BPD press release.

About Royal Rangers

By Royal Rangers

Royal Rangers is a Christian boys scouting group that is held at the Batavia Assembly of God on Wednesday at 700pm-830pm.  The boys work on merits and advancements and there is an emphasis on the bible, to earn the top award, The Gold Medal of Achievement.  There are groups for K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12.  This program has been around since 1962 and is an international organization.  We have many activities planned throughout the year.  We go camping at least 5 times a year, we have father and son events and many other fun activities. We also go to leadership camps for the boys to help them be able to take charge of the classes.   If you have any questions please call the church at 343-8521.  You can also visit the State web site for Royal Rangers at http://nyroyalrangers.org/

In our group we have many families who can not afford to go to the campouts and leadership camps.  The leadership camp costs $100.00 and most of the families can not afford it.  Some local business, organizations and people have seen the benfits of advesting into the boys of this community and have helped pay the cost for the boys to go to the leadership camps.  PetMart, Kiwanis Clup, First Choice Travel, the Batavia Police Benevolent Association, the Deputy Sheriff;s Association, the Batavia Fire Fighters Union, and Viola Hale all have invested in the boys of this community.  Thank you so very much.
