O-A presents 'Little Women' musical within COVID restrictions

As with all things this year, everything is different because of COVID-19. Some activities cannot currently run and those that can happen look much different than in past years.
Although many aspects of a live stage performance had to be adjusted, we were very excited to still be able to provide this opportunity for our students. In an attempt to remain as healthy and safe as possible, while also following the regulations, we were able to get our students on stage (and on screen) using masks and as much social distancing as possible while interacting with each other.
We, unfortunately, had to make decisions to have a smaller cast, have our ensemble prerecorded, and scale down much of our sets and props to less than normal. However, it allowed our actors and actresses to focus more on their emotions and character portrayal in order to bring this touching musical to both our live audience and our supporters online.
It has been amazing to work with our students this year – to see their passion and joy, to take them beyond what they thought was possible, and to have them shine on stage. It is truly wonderful to still be able to create opportunities and live performances with our talented students.
Our cast and crew put on three amazing performances. And although most of the general public could not attend the performances in person, there is still an opportunity to catch these outstanding performers.
The performance has been uploaded online and is available to watch through April 18th. You can purchase access to the performance by going to www.OACSDramaClub.weebly.com and following the link on our homepage. From there you can either purchase single viewer access for $10 or access for the entire household for $25.
All money helps to offset the cost of rentals and royalties for producing the musical. You can purchase the access at any time before April 18th, an email link will be sent to you, and once you hit play you will have 48 hours to view the entire performance before your access runs out. Elba/O-A crushes Cuba-Rushford in return to 11-man football
Back to 11-man football, Elba/Oakfield-Alabama is picking up right where it left off in eight-man football in 2019: A high-powered offense and a stingy defense, judging by its 59-6 victory over Cuba-Rushford at Van Detta Stadium on Saturday.
Ty Mott rushed for 213 yards on 19 carries, scoring five touchdowns. Jayden Hughes rushed eight times for 93 yards and two TDs. Gaige Armbrewster had five carries, 69 yards, and a TD.
Peyton Yasses had a team-leading seven tackles.
"With such little time together with our full team thus far, I felt that our guys were able to come out early and execute at a high level," said Head Coach Tyler Winter. "The offense played with a nice flow. Defensively, our guys played physical and stayed disciplined for the four quarters. I am happy for our team and proud of the commitment they are showing for one another."

Oakfield-Alabama snatches sectional title from Cal-Mum 55-50
Number 3 seed, at 10-2, Oakfield-Alabama knocked off #1 seed Cal-Mum, at 13-0, by a score of 55-50 to win Saturday's Class C2 Section V trophy at Cal-Mum.
Travis Wiedrich scored 20 points and Kaden Cusmano sunk a trio of three-pointers on his way to a 19-point game.

Cusmano's 30 points lifts O-A past HAC
Kaden Cusmano exploded for 30 points Thursday night against Harley-Aliendale-Columbia to lead Oakfield-Alabama to a 80-57 win in the Class C2 Section V semifinal.
The win puts #3 seed O-A in the championship game on Saturday at Cal-Mum against Cal-Mum, the #1 seed at 13-0. Game time is 6:30 p.m.
Gaige Armbrewster scored 20 points for the Hornets and Travis Wiedrich scored nine.

Hornets advance with win over Dundee
Oakfield-Alabama zoomed past Dundee on Tuesday night to win the Section V Class C2 quarterfinal by a score of 72-40.
Travis Wiedrich and Kaden Cusmano each scored 11 points. Ty Mott scored eight.
The Hornets (9-2, #3) will face Harley-Allendale-Columbia (10-1, #2) in a semifinal game at HAC at 6 p.m., Thursday.
Also on Tuesday, Pembroke lost to Avon, 58-53.

After injury to Porter, O-A falls to York 52-47
One of Oakfield-Alabama's most consistent scorers, Danica Porter, suffered an injury in the first half of Monday's Class C2 sectional quarterfinal against York, and while it's hard to say Porter's injury changed the outcome of the game, the shootout did go down to the final seconds.
MaKena Reding scored 14 points, Brooke Reding 11, and Kelsey Schlagenhauf had eight points and 11 rebounds. Emma Wray scored eight and had nine rebounds. Porter had three points and three assists.
Sydnee Emerson scored 20 for York. Adison Plank scored eight.
The Hornets entered the tournament as the #2 seed at 8-3 and York was the #7 seed at 7-3.

O-A beats Lyndonville 70-63
A well-balanced offensive game propelled Oakfield-Alabama to a 70-63 victory over Lyndonville on Wednesday.
Gaige Armbrewster scored 14 points, Ty Mott 13, Kyle Porter 12, Payton Yasses 11, Travis Wiedrich 10, and Kaden Cusmano 8.
Nathan Dillenbeck scored 21 points for Lyndonville.
The Hornets are now 7-2 on the season.

On Senior Night, Oakfield-Alabama beat Lyndonville 58-39.
Danica Porter scored 15 points for the Hornets and Makena Reding scored 14. Porter hit five three-point shots.

Coach Stehlar gets 100th career win for O-A
Oakfield-Alabama beat Holley 72-37 on Monday to give Head Coach Ryan Stehlar his 100th career win.
Kaden Cusmano scored 24 points to lead the Hornets. Travis Wiedrich scored 16 points and Gaige Armbrewster scored nine.

Armbrewster's big night propels O-A to win over Alexander
It was the Gaige Armbrewster show in Oakfield on Thursday night as the junior scored 28 points to dominate the Hornets game against the Alexander Trojans.
Oakfield-Alabama won 60-44 to move to 5-1 on the season.
Travis Wiedrich scored nine points for the Hornets and Jordan Schlagenhauf and Kaden Cusmano each scored six.
For Alexander, Devin Dean scored 17 points and Nicholas Kramer scored nine.

The Hornets beat the Bees 74-56 in Oakfield on Tuesday night behind 17 points for Travis Wiedrich.
Kaden Cusmano added 15 points, Peyton Yasses, 11, Gaige Armbrewster, 10, and Kyle Porter, 8.
For Byron-Bergen, Jerrod Amesbury scored 16 points, Gianni Ferrara 15, and Braedyn Chambry, 11.

Trio of Hornets carry O-A to 55-43 win
Kaden Cusmano, Gaige Armbrewster, and Travis Wiedrich led Oakfield-Alabama to a 55-43 victory over Wheatland-Chili at home on Friday night.
They scored 17, 16 and 15 points, respectively.
In the only other local boys basketball game on Friday, Elba beat Notre Dame 61-50.
In girls basketball, Dansville beat Le Roy 65-34, and Pavilion beat York 54-46.

COVID cases wash out three games for Ice Devils
Two members of the Ice Devils, the hockey team that represents Batavia, Le Roy, Alexander, Elba, and Oakfield-Alabama, tested positive for COVID-19, meaning all players and coaches must quarantine at home until Feb. 24.
Three regular-season games have been canceled and won't be rescheduled.
Batavia Athletic Director Michael Bromley said one person tested positive last week and after consulting with the health department and the school's medical director, they would quarantine the team if a second person tested positive. That positive test came in on Tuesday.
This is only the second time a Batavia-affiliated team has been required to quarantine during the regular season. It happened previously with the Alpine Ski team.
Bromley said he can't emphasize enough how important it is for a parent to keep a child home from practice and games if a player is showing any symptoms because it can affect the whole team.
The Ice Devils were 0-4 on the season. The three missed games will be counted as "no contest." There will be five games left in the regular season once the team returns to the ice. Bromley said it will take multiple wins in those final five games for the team to reach the playoffs.
O-A beats Kendall 37-22
The Lady Hornets beat Kendall on Friday 37-22.
For Oakfield-Alabama, Caitlin Ryan scored 14 points.

O-A swimmer wins two sectional titles, Swimmer of the Meet honors
Oakfield-Alabama senior Ryan Schildwaster won two Class D sectional titles in swimming yesterday. He took first place in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:10.44. He also won the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 57 seconds.
In addition to the titles, the coaches selected Schildwaster as Swimmer of the Meet.
"This is a well-deserved honor for a very dedicated young man and an exceptionally talented athlete," said Coach Patricia Buczek. "Congratulations Ryan on a swim well done."

Oakfield-Alabama beat Kendall on Thursday 70-35, with Gaige Armbruster scoring 16 points and Kadon Cusmano scoring 12.
Jordon Schlagenhauf scorred 11.

Notre Dame pulls out win over O-A to open COVID-shortened season
Sparked by 33 points from Mark Sanders, Notre Dame opened a COVID-shortened basketball season against Oakfield-Alabama with a 65-62 win at home.
For the Fighting Irish, Jordan Welker was the only other player to hit double digits, scoring 10 points. Ryan Fitzpatrick had six and Jimmy Fanara had six.
Travis Wiedrich led the Hornets with 31 points. Gaige Armbrewster scored 18 and Kaden Cusmano scored 14.

Group response from Oakfield-Alabama to questions on school reopening
Here is the response received from Matt Lamb, school board president for Oakfield-Alabama for the questions we sent each individual board member of the school district. Lamb said this served as a group response. A group response was not an option given to the school board members.

"The OACS school board fully supports our district's reopening plan. The plan originated from a district survey that went to all families. The survey indicated that 84% of our families would approve of the decision to send their children back to school to resume full-time, in person instruction. The administrative team concluded that our facilities have the space necessary to meet the 6 foot physical distancing guideline within the classrooms while the students receive their instruction, making the request of the families of our district possible. The committee that helped form our plan included administrative staff, teachers, students and parents of the district.
I'm happy to say most parent feedback went directly to our Superintendent and the building Principals. However, to your question, we'd mention that at our last board meeting some families asked to speak in our public comment section and expressed their approval and gratitude to the district for our plan.
We'd also like to acknowledge the flexibility within the plan. It is important to the board that families have the option to learn remotely if their concerns could not be alleviated by the district's plan. Our school is accommodating those families that aren't ready to send their children into our facilities. Should these families reconsider their decision, there is also a re-entry plan for students who have chosen the remote option.
Our board is incredibly appreciative to all who made themselves available to help write the reopening plan, and also to all of the district employees who will be implementing the plan. We are excited to get the kids back in school, but at the same time, understand the anxieties this brings to both families and staff. We expect the plan to remain fluid and for our administrative team to continue to make themselves available to hear the concerns of families and staff. We wish everyone the best of health as we get back to the business of the education of the students of our district."
