A Genesee County resident has been awarded a $1,000 "Russo Family Scholarship" to attend Alfred State College.
Kathryn J. Worth, of Corfu, is slated to graduate from Pembroke Central School and intends to enroll in the college's digital media and animation program.
The scholarship is based on academic achievement and is made possible through the generosity of the Russo Family Foundation.
Fully accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Alfred State offers 52 associate degrees, 19 baccalaureate degree programs, and three certificate programs.
Brianna Olsen, of Le Roy, is among the 1,422 students who earned Deans' List honors for the spring 2011 semester at SUNY Oneonta. To qualify, undergraduates must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher while carrying a course load of 12 semester hours or more.
A liberal arts college focusing on teaching and learning, SUNY Oneonta was established as a state normal school in 1889 and incorporated as a founding member of the state university system in 1948. The college is well known for its outstanding faculty, strong academic programs, educational technology, community service and character-building activities and scenic campus.
Two Genesee County students earned diplomas as part of the Wells College Class of 2011.
Kylan Hallett, of Basom, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Sundown, received a bachelor's degree. Kylan majored in History.
Alexandra Lauer, of Corfu, daughter of Ms. Sandra Lauer, received a bachelor's degree. Alexandra majored in English, with a concentration in Literature, and minored in Secondary Education, graduating summa cum laude with distinction. She received Wells' William Liberi '05 Memorial Prize for TLGBQ Activism and Scholarship.

Four Genesee County students were the finalists for Outstanding Scholar Awards in Genesee Community College's Advanced Studies program. The awardees were honored at a ceremony and reception on Wednesday, June 1, in the Stuart Steiner Theatre at the Batavia campus.
Advanced Studies is part of the college's ACE program, or Accelerated College Enrollment, and allows high school students the opportunity to earn college credit from Genesee while attending class within their high school. High school teachers approved as Genesee adjunct faculty teach all Advanced Studies courses. Some of the most enterprising young students earn enough transferable Advanced Studies credit to enter their first year of college as sophomores.
"We're pleased we could make this a special evening for our Advanced Studies students and their families," said Ed Levinstein, associate dean of the ACE program. "The students honored are some of the best and brightest students in our local region."
A total of 21 finalists were selected from 163 nominations in the five subject areas of mathematics, science, social science, foreign language and English. As in years past, a committee of academic professionals from Genesee Community College selected the award winners, listed by subject area and high school:

The Elba Central School Class of 2011 was honored to welcome Lt. Col. Paul Birch and 1992 Elba graduate as their guest speaker for the Sixth Annual Top Ten Dinner on June 6.
The event is held annually for the top 10 graduating students from Elba and their families to recognize their academic achievements.
Lt. Col. Birch was the guest speaker and shared with the students the importance of staying true to their values and never forgetting their hometown roots in Elba.
In his speech, he encouraged the students to apply all they learned and use their small-town values as an advantage in life.
The Elba Student Council graciously sponsored the event.
Principal Jason Smith awarded each student an honor pin in recognition of their top 10 status.
Lt. Col. Birch is an evaluator pilot with more than 1,200 combined hours in the F-15SE and was promoted to the rank of Lt. Col. on March 1, 2010.
His military decorations include the Air Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, and Global War on Terrorism Medal.
On June 1, Lt. Col Birch took command of the 4th Operation Support Squadron.
Past speakers at the annual banquet have included Maureen Torrey-Marshall, Dorothy Coughlin, Samuel Giansante, Colleen Contant and Charles Zambito.

The State University of New York at Geneseo has announced its Deans' List for the spring semester 2011. To be on the list, a student must have achieved a 3.5 grade-point average (out of 4) while taking at least 12 credit hours.

SUNY Geneseo is a public liberal arts college recognized nationally for excellence in undergraduate education and for its professional and master's level programs.
Andrew Lipnicky, of Basom, was named to the Deans' List at Florida Institute of Technology for the spring semester, which ended in May. Lipnicky is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Space Science -- Astronomy / Astrophysics.
To be included on the Deans' List, a student must complete 12 or more graded credits in a semester with a semester grade-point average (GPA) of at least 3.4 out of 4.0.

The President's and Deans' lists represent the academic top 25.4 percent of the Oswego student body. Students who achieve grade averages of 3.80 and above on the 4.00 scale are named to the President's List, the top 6.5 percent of Oswego students. To be included on the Deans' List, students must have a semester grade average of 3.30 to 3.79.
Admission to SUNY Oswego is competitive. U.S. News named it among the "Top Public Regional Universities in the North" for 2011, and the Princeton Review includes Oswego in its college guidebook "The Best Northeastern Colleges."
A 150-year-old comprehensive college in the State University of New York system, Oswego enrolls more than 8,000 students in its College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Communication, Media and the Arts, and School of Education.
This weekend the Elba Jazz Ensemble brought home the gold from the 50th annual Gorham Pageant of Bands when they placed first in the Class C Jazz Band competition.
This was the jazz ensemble's third year participating in the pageant, having placed third and second in the past two festivals.
Elba, normally a Class DD school, was the smallest to partipate in the pageant and was therefore bumped up to the Class C level to compete against Naples, Dundee, Gananda and South Seneca.
The Elba Concert Band placed fifth in its category.
The jazz ensemble is directed by Phil Briatico. Its members are: Marissa Tomczak, Mark Hare, Dillon Hirsch, Dan Starowitz, Ann Marie Georgia, and Connor Rohan on saxophone; Emily Tomczak on clarinet; Dakota Hirsch, Alexandra Lacey and Dixie Hirsch on trumpet; Andrew Lacey, Steven Perez-Gangi, Becky Vlack and Christopher Vlack on trombone; Jenna Bird on French horn; Laura Accardi and Matt Anauo on guitar; Gretel Kauffman on keyboard; Alex Jasinski on bass guitar; and Liz White on drums.
Dr. Matthew J. Landfried, of United Memorial Medical Center in Batavia, has been appointed as consultant to the Physicians' Council for Responsible Reform in Washington, D.C.
"I am very pleased to make this appointment and look forward ro Dr. Landfried's input," said Congressman Bill Cassidy, M.D. (R-LA). "To date, lawmakers have not been receiving enough input from physicians."
According to the council, "America is facing a health care crisis. Dr. Landfried will play a key role in recommending the next course of action with respect to health care reform and in advising members of Congress on access, quality, physician reimbursement, liability reform, and other key issues.
"The Physicians' Council for Responsible Reform is comprised of leading physicians from acorss the country who are lending their expertise and are committed to offering solutions to the problems facing the health care industry without sacrificing quality."
The local six-person team of Dave Pepper, Millie Tomidy-Pepper, Matt and Becky Ashley and Gerry and Maureen Calmes, all of Le Roy, placed 12th in the Roc City Rib Fest Cook-off.
The festival is held during Memorial Day weekend at Ontario Beach Park (Charlotte Beach). More than 115 teams competed from around the nation and Canada.
The Genesee-Orleans Regional Arts Council is hosting the 8th Annual Genesee-Orleans Student Art Show. The exhibits are on display now through Friday, June 3 in two galleries in Genesee County.

The Batavia Lions Club presented its annual scholarships and awards to several local students at a ceremony earlier this week.
Each spring, several graduating seniors at Batavia and Notre Dame high schools apply for these scholarships. They are interviewed by a committee of Lions Club members, and are chosen by the committee to receive $1,000 scholarships.
In addition, selected students from both schools are awarded the Arthur Roth Fine Arts Award and the Bill Cook Scholar-Athlete Award.
A final award is the Batavia Lions Club Award in Communications, which is given to a Genesee Community College student in memory of two former Batavia Lions and local media legends – Paul Bostwick, the former managing editor of the Batavia Daily News and James H. Gerrety, the former news director of WBTA.
During the high school football season each fall, members of the Batavia Lions Club sells snacks at the games. The proceeds are used exclusively for the scholarship and awards program.
This year’s Lions Club Scholarship winners are Kayleen Kelley, BHS, Danielle Siebert, BHS, Bethany Gabriele, BHS, Shannon Schmit, BHS, Justine Saraceni, ND and Lucy Norton, ND.

State Senator Michael H. Ranzenhofer honored Millie Tomidy-Pepper this week as the 2011 Woman of Distinction for the 61st Congressional District at the 14th Annual Senate Women of Distinction ceremony.
She was honored for her outstanding contributions in enriching the quality of life for the community and beyond.
"Without women such as Millie, there would be a huge void in Genesee County," Ranzenhofer said. "Her initiative and tireless advocacy has led to the creation and development of so many services at the Mental Health Association in Genesee County...these programs have served the needs of the community and have had a positive impact on a countless number of lives."
In response to the recognition, Tomidy-Pepper said: "To have an honor such as this bestowed upon me by Senator Ranzenhofer and be included among a group of women that have inspired me and whom I hold in the highest regard has left me speechless. I owe a great deal of gratitude to the countless women who came before me and worked tirelessly to pave the way so that I could be blessed with opportunities in my life to do work that I find both meaningful and rewarding."
Tomidy-Pepper has worked at the Mental Health Association in Genesee County for more than 17 years, serving the past 10 years as executive director. She has also served on the Board of Directors for the Mental Health Association of New York State. During her tenure, she has established numerous support groups and programs, including Trauma Services program, Transportation Services, and Mental Illness/Chemical Abuse Services program.
She is a contributor to the Community Services Board-Mental Health Subcommittee, Mental Health Court, Crime Victims’ Rights Week Planning Committee, Genesee Veterans Support Network, GCC Human Service Committee and the Genesee Area Personnel Association.
In addition, she volunteers at the Batavia Animal Shelter and has traveled to New Orleans four times after Hurricane Katrina to help with rebuilding efforts.
She and her husband, David, reside in Le Roy.
In her spare time, Millie enjoys spending time with family and participating in outdoor activities, including skiing, kayaking, hiking and flying.
The Women of Distinction program was created in 1998 to honor great New York women. Past honorees include the late comedienne Lucille Ball, 19th Century suffragist Katherine Davis and other women accomplished in sciences, academics, business and the arts.
The Mental Health Association in Genesee County promotes mental wellness through education, advocacy and support for the community thereby improving quality of life and instilling hope.
The following local residents were among more than 555 graduate students from Nazareth College who received master's and doctoral degrees during the college's 84th Commencement Exercises held on May 8.

Seven members of Genesee Community College's faculty and staff will receive the State University of New York' s Chancellor's Award for Excellence this year, the Board of Trustees learned Monday evening.
The SUNY Chancellor's Award is bestowed on faculty and staff members who make significant contributions to their campuses and SUNY, and whose work is marked by high accomplishment and a commitment to excellence.
Named as 2011 recipients of the award are:
Michelle D. Abdella, instructor of Mathematics, SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. She resides in Batavia.
Maureen E. Dugan, assistant professor of Fine Arts and Ceramics, SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching. She resides in Penfield.
Carla L. Guiste, reproduction services operator, SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Classified Service. She resides in Oakfield.
Kathleen A. Kimber, professor of Spanish, SUNY Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Scholarship and Creative Activities. She resides in Rochester.

This year's recipients of the SUNY Chancellor's Awards for Excellence bring the total number of faculty and staff honored in the history of the college to 105.
"Our 2011 recipients bring an extraordinary record of accomplishment to our students and our college as a whole," President Stuart Steiner told trustees. "We extend our congratulations to these faculty and staff members, and our thanks for the significant contributions they make to our success."
Corfu resident Pamela Ware was honored for her 10 years of service to the Nioga Library System at the 52nd annual dinner held at the Hickory Ridge Country Club in Holley on May 17.
Ware served as chair of the Personnel Committee and as the state and national liaison. She was also trustee-at-large for Genesee County libraries.
She received a Trustee Certification Award for her advocacy efforts on behalf of Nioga and the member libraries of Niagara, Orleans and Genesee Counties. She also received a stone plaque engraved with Thomas Jefferson’s famous quote in 1815 -- “I cannot live without books.”
Ware quipped, “The 1815 refers to how much this weighs!”
