Five Genesee Region ladies make all-state softball teams

The 2023 NYS All-State Softball teams were released earlier this week. Batavia Notre Dame was the only Genesee Region team with two selections. The players that were selected were:

  • Loretta Sorochty from Batavia Notre Dame - Pitcher - Class D 1st team

  • Katie Landers from Batavia Notre Dame - SS - Class D 3rd team (this is Katie's second time making the team, 2021 Class D 2nd team)

  • Kendall Phillips from Byron Bergen - Pitcher - Class C 2nd team

  • Caitlin Ryan from Oakfield Alabama - SS/P - Class C 4th team

  • Lorelei Dillenbeck from Lyndonville - SS - Class D 4th team

Div. 1: Junior Trent Woods
 Alexander: 12 pt 6 assist in loss to Wellsville 51-38. Trent Woods 14 points 4 assist 5 steals in win 66-38. Trent made all tournament team at Attica

Div. 2: Braedyn Chambry Byron-Bergenf  Braedyn tallied 31 pts and grabbed 15 rebounds in a season opening win over EMHCS.  He followed that performance up with a 30 pt and 18 rebound effort in the opening round of the Warsaw tournament, leading the Bees to their second win.  Early foul trouble landed Chambry on the bench for much of the first half, but he still managed to lead his team to the tournament title with 18 pts and 12 rebounds. 

Jordan Welker Notre Dame : Jordan scored 28 pts with 7 assists and 6 steals to earn Player of the Game honors as ND beat Geneseo in the Way-Co Showcase.

Div. 1: Cole Harding Attica:  
We were down 14 in the 2nd half and Cole led us back and we won in overtime. Cole had 33 points and 10 rebounds. 25 points in the 4th quarter and overtime 

Div. 2: Connor Scott Elba:  Connor had 30pts to lead Elba to a win over Albion. 

Byron-Bergen Fall athletes and coaches awarded regional and division honors

BERGEN -- Congratulations to our Genesee Region and Section V Class C Players of the Year. Four Byron-Bergen athletes were selected by sport-specific committees of coaches and league officials from a pool of all of the players on all of the teams within these divisions.

“These are incredible honors,” said Athletic Director Rich Hannan. “These athletes were chosen fromhundreds of candidates. They stood out for their talent, hard work, and unending dedication.”

  • Bryce Yockel was voted Offensive Football Player of the Year for Section V Class C;
  • Kelsey Fuller was voted Genesee Region and Section V Class C1 Girls Soccer Player of the Year;
  • Sam Pringle was voted Genesee Region Boys Soccer Player of the Year;
  • Maddie Farnsworth voted Genesee Region and Section V Class C Girls Volleyball Player of the Year.

Congratulations also to Coach Kenneth Rogoyski, who was named Genesee Region Boys Soccer Coach of the Year; Coach Wayne Hill, who was named Genesee Region and Section V Class C Girls Soccer Coach of the Year; and Coach Cindy D’Errico, who was named Genesee Region and Section V Class C Volleyball Coach of the Year.

Alexander Moves to 5-0

Alexander picked up two recent wins to move their record to 5-0 on the season.  

Last Thursday Alexander picked up a 9-0 win over Oakfield thanks to 4 goals from Senior Forward Julia Pettys, 4 goals from Junior Midfielder Abby Shilvock, and 1 goal from Junior Midfielder Maria Dominick.  Assists in the game went to Sophomore Forward Korie Leitten (2), Sophomore Midfielder Emily Alvut, Dominick, Pettys, and Shilvock.  Senior Amanda Bender had 3 saves in goal for her 3rd win and 1st shutout of the season.  

Monday Alexander traveled to Pembroke and played a very good all around game picking up an 8-0 win.  Senior Forward Julia Pettys again lead the way with 5 goals (all in the 1st half) while Junior Midfielder Abby Shilvock, Junior Midfielder Maria Dominick, and Junior Defender Gabby Kwiatek all found the net once.  Dominick had 2 assists, Junior Defender Ashlee Wolf had 1, Sophomore Midfielder Lydia Spiotta had 1, Shilvock had 1, and Kwiatek had 1.  Senior Amanda Bender played the first portion of the game and did not have to make a save while Sophomore Jess DeAngelo played the remainder of the game and made 2 saves as they combined for the shutout.

Alexander's next game is Wednesday at home against Elba 4:30pm.
