Calling all eighth to 11th graders, the Genesee County Youth Court is recruiting new members!

Youth Court is a voluntary alternative for young people who face disciplinary action through school or law enforcement.

Youth who are referred admit to the charge and appear before a court of their peers. Three youth judges listen to both sides of the issue and determine an appropriate disposition. The goal of youth court is to improve youth citizenship skills and decrease problematic behavior.  

Youth Court members learn about the judicial process and law enforcement; develop group decision-making, leadership and public speaking skills; participate in all roles of the courtroom: judge, prosecution, defense and bailiff. 

Genesee County eighth to 11th graders who are interested can go online to download an application from the website www.co.genesee.ny.us, where you will find a link on the Youth Bureau page.

Applications are due by Aug. 2nd.

Interviews of potential candidates will take place in August and September with the training to begin in October.

Genesee County Youth Court members participated in a Mock Trial in honor of Law Day May 1. There are currently 34 Youth Court members representing seven of our nine school districts as well as Notre Dame.

The Youth Bureau is proud to coordinate this important component of the justice system. Any eighth-  through 11^th-graders who are interested in becoming a member of Genesee County Youth Court can find an application online here or call the Genesee County Youth Bureau at 344-3960.

Genesee County Youth Court also celebrated Law Day by acknowledging their seniors who will head off to college this fall.

Some of these members have been involved with Genesee County Youth Court since their swearing in, which took place in January of 2018. The court was lucky enough to have such great youth to represent Genesee County Youth Court!

Genesee County Youth Court swore in the Class of 2021 members on Tuesday, Jan. 26, via Zoom due to COVID-19 restrictions.

This is the 13^th class to be sworn in since Youth Court’s inception. The oath and charge of confidentiality were administered by the honorable Judge Tom Williams.

These students went through an eight-week training and had to pass a bar exam to get to this conclusion.

The new youth court members are: Melania Desa e Frias, Katelynn Everett, Alexandra Hackett, Colin McConnell, Adam Piper, Beckett Swanson, Stuart Ulrich, Peyton Woeller and Quinn Woeller. 

The Genesee County Youth Court is a court where youth execute all roles of the tribunal court. There are three judges, a prosecutor, defense attorney, and bailiff. Youth who are referred to court can be as young as seven and up to 17 and must be referred through law enforcement or school personnel.

The Genesee County Youth Court is designed to create an atmosphere of equality in the law through judgment by peers while holding the respondent accountable for their actions.
