Mandala being created by monks at GCC meant to symbolize love and compassion

By Howard B. Owens

A group of Tibetan monks are at Genesee Community College this week creating a sand mandala as part of the inauguration ceremony celebration week for new college President Jim Sunser.

Sand mandalas are created using colored sand and the art form goes back at least 2,500 years.

Once created, mandalas are destroyed in a ceremony and the sand dispersed in the nearest body of flowing water.

On Friday, at 10 a.m., the monks will sweep away the sand of their painstakingly created work of art, take the sand in bags to the Tonawanda Creek and dump it into the flowing water.

Spokesman Tanzin Nawang said the process reminds us that life is just temporary.

The monks are members of the Drepung Loseling Monastery in Tibet.

Besides the mandala being painted by the monks, students and members of the GCC community are also working on mandalas in order to learn about the art form.

Every mandala has symbols with various means. Nawang said the mandala being created by the monks visiting GCC is about love and compassion.

"Everybody by nature wants to be happy and live in peace and harmony," Nawang said. "They do not want to suffer, so it is important to devote love and compassion, and when you devote your life to love and compassion, you will receive love and compassion.

Law Day at GCC to feature two prominent jurists

By Billie Owens

Press release:

Two distinguished speakers will discuss their careers in the legal field during the second annual Law Day program at Genesee Community College.

Acting State Supreme Court Justice Robert C. Noonan and U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York William Hochul Jr. will visit the Batavia campus on Wednesday, May 2 during the week of festivities to welcome new President James Sunser, EdD.

The Law Day program begins at 9 a.m. and is intended to help high school seniors enrolled in the Legal Careers Academy of the Accelerated College Enrollment program (ACE) and Criminal Justice students gain a better understanding of the importance of the judicial system, with the speakers addressing the theme "No Courts, No Justice, No Freedom."

Noonan, acting State Supreme Court justice since 2001, is also an elected Genesee County Superior Court judge and surrogate since 1997.

His law career has spanned almost four decades, including presiding as a judge at various court levels and serving as district attorney and assistant DA in Genesee County and special district attorney in dozens of criminal and civil cases in Genesee, Orleans, Livingston and Monroe counties.

A Batavia native, Justice Noonan was admitted to the New York State Bar Association in 1976, after earning his J.D. from Fordham Law School. He has served on various bar association advisory councils and panels and is certified to hear capital murder cases in New York. Judge Noonan has also handled more than 100 appeals before the state's Appellate Division courts and argued several cases before the New York Court of Appeals, the highest court in the state.

He is also a highly sought-after speaker, presenting lectures on the Supreme Court, trial practices, and various state laws and procedures. The jurist has also been an active member of several community organizations, including the Batavia Rotary Club, the St. Jerome Hospital Board and Camp Stella Maris.

Justice Noonan will discuss criminal court proceedings, with an explanation of how the courts strive to protect American rights and ensure justice for all. He will also take part in a question-and-answer session immediately following his lecture.

Hochul, as U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York State, is responsible for overseeing the prosecution of any federal criminal case in the 17 counties that comprise the district.

He earned his law degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo and joined the local U.S. Attorney's Office in 1991. Since then, he has prosecuted a large number of notorious cases involving whitecollar crime, gang violence, and international organized crime.

Hochul became chief of the office's Anti-Terrorism Unit after September 11, 2001, and chief of the National Security Division five years later. During that time, he was the lead prosecutor in several high-profile international terrorism cases, including the notorious Lackawanna Six from the Buffalo-area.

He has also served as an adjunct professor at U.B. Law School, Niagara University and Hilbert College, where he taught courses on terrorism and trial techniques, and frequently lectures across the U.S. and abroad on prosecuting cases involving terrorism and organized crime. He has received numerous awards for his work, including the 2003 Attorneys General Award for Exceptional Service -- the highest award bestowed by the U.S. Justice Department.

Hochul's lecture will focus on the appellate process, with a Q-and-A to follow.

The Law Day program is free and open to the public.

GCC's blood drives have saved more than 10,000 lives since 1987

By Billie Owens

Press release:

When the Student Activities Office at Genesee Community College organized its first blood drive in 1987, just three students donated. Twenty-five years later, those three-times-a-year drives have collected more than 3,500 units of blood, and Red Cross District Director Debra Miller says those donations have saved more than 10,000 lives!

Miller says each unit of donated blood can be used to save three patient lives through the use of whole blood, platelets and plasma.

"Because of the humanitarian efforts of GCC's student and faculty, 10,503 lives have been saved," she said.

Miller was on the GCC Batavia campus earlier this month to present an award to Student Activities Director Cliff Scutella and the department's technical specialist, Joanna Barefoot. The cup-shaped trophy recognizes the school for more than two decades of blood drives and the lives saved by those donations.

Additionally, the Red Cross reciprocates with a scholarship program created in 2006 to recognize students at SUNY schools who show collections growth over the prior year. GCC students have been awarded Red Cross scholarships averaging $500 for three of the last four years.

Medina's no-hitter Highlights GCC's split with Finger Lakes

By Andrew Crofts

Genesee Community College starting pitcher Ruben Medina (Maracaibo, VEN) was nearly perfect on Tuesday afternoon against Finger Lakes Community College. Nearly. Medina started game one of the afternoon double header and allowed a one-out walk in the first inning to the visiting Lakers before retiring the next nineteen batters in a row, completing the first no-hitter in nine years for GCC. Medina quickly erased the top of the first inning walk with a ground ball double play and then set down the next eighteen batters on ten ground balls, five fly-outs and three strike outs.

“Ruben has done a great job for us all year,” said Cougars head coach Skip Sherman. “He was rewarded for all the hard work he has put in this year. He comes ready every game and prepares like he should.”

Genesee took the lead in the bottom of the first inning after Shakeel Newton (Christiansted, Virgin Islands) led off with a double and then scored on a sacrifice fly from Brandon Collins (Toronto, ON). The Cougars added two more in the first on a two-run double by Rafael Lozada (Santo Domingo, DR) that plated Tyler Koronas (Naples, FL) and Fauchedre Celestijn (Willemstad, Curacao).

GCC added to their lead with a run in the third inning on a sacrifice fly from Lozada, a run in the fourth inning on a solo homerun from Collins and two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Mark Knight (Christiansted, Virgin Islands) and a sacrifice fly from Koronas.

The 7-0 lead was more than enough and would hold for Medina who knew throughout the afternoon that he was in the middle of something special.

“I knew I had a no-hitter going but I just focused on the game and took it pitch-by-pitch,” said Medina. “I tried to just spot my pitches and use my curveball and changeup to set up my fastball.”

Ruben Medina (red glove) celebrates with teammates after throwing a no-hitter in game one against Finger Lakes Community College on Tuesday afternoon

Genesee won game one 7-0 on Medina’s first collegiate no-hitter and third lifetime, as he threw two no-hitters in Little League.

Celestijn went 1-2 with two runs scored, Collins was 1-2 with a run scored and two runs batted in and Lozada was 1-3 with two runs batted in.

In game two, GCC starting pitcher Kyle Taylor (Ajax, ON) held the Lakers scoreless until the fourth inning when he gave up the game’s first run. The Cougars responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a Jean Rodriguez (Caguas, Puerto Rico) RBI single to take the lead.

Taylor surrendered a run on a suicide squeeze in the fifth inning, which tied the game and proved to be his final inning pitched in the game. Finger Lakes CC took the lead in the sixth inning, scoring a run off of reliever Dan Harms (Hamburg, Germany) and then added an insurance run in the seventh off of Collins. The insurance run proved to be a big one, as the Cougars managed a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to close to within one at 4-3, but could not complete the comeback and fell by the same score.

Overall, the Genesee offense managed just four hits in game two. Rodriguez was 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored, Collins was 1-4 with an RBI and Celestijn was 1-4 with a run scored.

Genesee (20-10 overall) will host Monroe Community College for an afternoon double-header on Thursday starting at 1pm.

Staff and students of Genesee Community College were on R. Stephen Hawley Drive yesterday picking up roadside garbage. Within two hours, the group gathered more than 17 bags of garbage from along the shoulders of the roadway.

The project is part of the lead-up to Saturday's Cool Kids! ECO-Fest at GCC. On Saturday, you'll be able to come by the Batavia campus and drop off your old electronics for recycling and get the pressure on your tires checked.

The Lady Cougars were a run away from another mercy rule victory, leading 11-4 in the 6th inning before Alfred State scored seven times to tie the game at 11. GCC went quietly in the sixth and the seventh innings, and the game went into extra frames.

Both teams exchanged a run in the eight inning. Alfred State kept the pressure on with a run in the ninth and put two runners on base with a chance to extend the lead. GCC pitcher Abbey Rocque kept the Lady Cougars in the game by striking out the next three hitters, keeping it a one-run game. Genesee quickly tied the game in the ninth on an RBI single from Foss and then won the game when Wilhoite hit a line drive to center that was dropped, scoring Foss. GCC won game two 14-13.
