Fire at our house

By Howard B. Owens

We had an electrical fire at our house on Morton Avenue, Batavia, early this morning.

I'm fine. Billie is fine. Rocky is fine (dog). Nellie Bly (puppy) is fine. Fiona (cat) is fine. We're unsure about Maybelline (cat) but she's a survivor and spends a lot of time outside so she's probably fine.

There is a lot of smoke damage but no personal belongings that are important to us were destroyed.

There is no structural damage.

The fire started with nightlight in the downstairs bathroom at about 2 a.m. and was largely contained to the bathroom because the door was closed.

City fire, Mercy EMS, and Batavia PD responded.

We would like to thank City fire for their quick response and for saving our pets and Batavia PD, as well as all of our neighbors and Alecia Kaus, for their concern and assistance.

UPDATE 7:03 a.m.: Maybelline is safe.

Vehicle removed from garage in Stafford, preventing structure fire after fuel spill

By Howard B. Owens

A fuel gas leak from a vehicle parked in a garage at 5561 Clinton Street Road, Stafford, sparked a fire at about 7:50 p.m. yesterday.

Stafford Fire Chief Matt Hendershott said that a vehicle owner was working on a vehicle when the fire started. The vehicle owner and the owner of the garage managed to pull the vehicle from the building before fire crews arrived.

As a result, the vehicle owner was transported to an area hospital for evaluation of possible smoke inhalation.

Upon arrival responding, crews found a grease fire located on a stove that was contained to a pan. The damage was confined to the stovetop and the residence was ventilated to remove the smoke condition.

Occupants of the residence were evaluated at the scene by Mercy EMS personnel and a member of the Byron Fire Department who was working at the location.

At 12:17 p.m., City Fire Department was then dispatched to a reported residential fire at located at 236 State St. First arriving fire units were on scene at 12:21 p.m. and upon arrival, firefighters found a working kitchen fire in the rear portion of the home.

While the fire was contained to the kitchen area of the home, there was extensive heat and smoke damage throughout the residence due to the intensity of the fire and two dogs perished inside of the home.

Additionally, the Town of Batavia Fire Department assisted city fire with responding to the New York State School for the Blind for a fire alarm activation during the State Street incident.
