Presidents, WNY life, African American church and the eclipse are featured HLOM February topics

The Holland Land Office Museum welcomes all on Thursday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. for our next Trivia Night at the Museum. In honor of President's Day, come and test your knowledge of the Presidents of the United States. Admission is $5 or $3 for museum members.

The Holland Land Office Museum is proud to announce the new exhibit opening “Reimagining History”. It will showcase a redesign of exhibits and exhibit spaces on the bottom level of the original structure of the Holland Land Office. Our permanent exhibit, “The Land Office,” will be presented with a new flow of story and presentation of artifacts. 

Also, the opening will showcase the newly revamped and enlarged exhibit, “98 Years Since the Sun Went Out.” In its new location in the old room where The Land Office” used to reside, it will triple in size and truly show what Genesee County looked like back in 1925 when the last total solar eclipse occurred over this area. There will be more history integrated into the exhibit along with many new objects! 

On Feb. 9 at 6 p.m. the museum welcomes all to view the new edition of “98 Years Since the Sun Went Out” and of “The Land Office.” You won’t want to miss it!

The Holland Land Office Museum is proud to welcome as the first presenter of our 2024 Guest Speaker Series Rick Falkowski on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. Mr. Falkowski is an author and lecturer who has given presentations on several aspects of WNY life and history, will be presenting on his newest book, "The Spirit of Buffalo Women: Prominent Women Who Called WNY their Home." The book highlights the many accomplishments of local women throughout history and their lasting impact on our area. Admission is $5 or $3 for museum members. This project is made possible with funds from the statewide Community Regrant Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature and administered by GO Art!

Join us at the Holland Land Office Museum for the next edition of our Java with Joe E. morning coffee series on Thursday, Feb. 22 at 9 a.m. This month in honor of President's Day our Director Ryan Duffy will share the many times that a sitting, future, or former President of the United States has visited Batavia and Genesee County, it is more times than you think. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Batavia. Reverend Williams will be presenting on the history and importance of the African American church, along with church member Ethal Miles, and his wife Dr. Cassandra Williams. Ethal will be speaking on the beginnings of the church and how things have changed, and Dr. Williams will be speaking on important African Americans in medicine and her own perspective. GO ART! is seeking submissions of artwork for upcoming exhibit

GO ART! is seeking submissions for an upcoming exhibit, This Art is Garbage which provides artists an opportunity to explore the possibilities of garbage and waste as a medium for creativity. Artists are asked to redirect items that would normally be thrown away, into works of art. 

Open to artists of all skill levels, we are actively seeking submissions from students, emerging artists, and professionals. Garbage is a theme that connects us all and we hope to showcase a wide variety of skill levels and perspectives.

  • Oliver’s Gallery, GO ART! Seymour Place, 201 E Main Street, Batavia.

Dates: 

  • Work Drop Off: Feb 7 - 10, 2024, 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.
  • On View: Feb 14 - Mar 30, 2024
  • Artist Reception: Feb 15, 2024, 5 - 8 p.m.

Theme:

  • This Art is Garbage

Eligibility:

  • Open to all levels of artists: students, emerging, and professionals

Guidelines:

  • Works of art may include a component of garbage in the finished piece, garbage may be used in the art making process (for example, creating texture and pattern), or garbage as the subject of the piece (for example, creative photography of discarded objects). “Upcycled” items, such as painted furniture, are not accepted.
  • Work must not exceed 36”x 36”
  • Artwork must be wired and ready to hang (GO ART! reserves the right to turn away any submitted work that is not properly wired and ready to hang.)

Entry:

  • There is no entry fee
  • Each artist may submit up to two works.

HLOM will be closed the month of January, re-opening in February

The Holland Land Office Museum will be closed to the public in January from Tuesday, Jan. 2 through Saturday, Jan 27. The staff and volunteers of the museum will be working on getting the museum ready for a brand-new year in 2024 full of new exhibits, displays, programs, and special events. 

The museum exhibit spaces will be undergoing major facelifts for our new exhibits. The museum will be resuming its regular operating hours of Tuesday - Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 30.

When the museum reopens in February, it will be “Reimagining History”. HLOM debuts new exhibit, '98 years since the sun went out'

Come to the Holland Land Office Museum and see a snapshot of Genesee County and Batavia in the 1920s through our upcoming exhibit, “98 Years Since the Sun Went Out” sponsored by Max Pies Furniture. The display will be from November to April 2024.

Experience what living in Genesee County in the 1920s’ was like and the commotion around January 24, 1925, the last time we witnessed the total solar eclipse in our area. Go back in time and see what people wore, what our community looked like, where people shopped and worked, their home lives, and how they saw and reacted to the eclipse. 

The exhibit will feature clothing, newspaper articles, household goods, business and industry memorabilia, and much more from the 1920s. 

A revamp of the exhibit will occur in January which will open on February 9, 2024, which will include even more artifacts and a greater experience of what 1920s Genesee County and Batavia looked and felt like.

GO ART! accepting entries for 'Art of the Rural' exhibit beginning March 22

GO ART! announces a Call for Artwork for its 6th annual juried exhibition, Art of the Rural.  The exhibition is open to all artists.  All work must be original, created by the submitting artist, and not previously exhibited at GO ART!. All media is accepted.  Artwork must be ready to hang, and no larger than 36” x 36”. 

GO ART! members may submit up to five works for $30, $5 for each additional work.  Non-members may submit up to three works for $30, $5 for each additional work. Artists can drop off submissions at GO ART! located in Seymour Place, 201 East Main St., Batavia between March 22 and April 1, during regular business hours. No entries will be accepted after April 1. 

“The Art of the Rural is one of my favorite exhibitions.” says Education Director Mary Jo Whitman. “ It is so exciting to see all of the talent that comes out of our region.  It really is a fabulous opportunity for artists of every level to showcase their talents while exploring the theme: rural.”

Art of the Rural will be on display April 5 – June 5.  The winners will be announced at the artist reception, April 20 from 5 to 8 p.m.

GCC and SUNY Brockport Study Abroad: A Documentation of the Dutch Culture

Genesee Center for the Arts, Stuart Steiner Theatre Lobby, Genesee Community College

Creative writing and photographs displaying Dutch culture by GCC and SUNY Brockport students that participated in a study abroad trip to Amsterdam in the Spring of 2010.

The show highlights students photographs that serve as a final curriculum culmination to the digital photography and sociology courses that the studens participated in on the tour.

DUAL EXHIBIT: Melissa Mance-Coniglio and Jeanie Nutting

Melissa's illustrative paintings combine human and nature around themes of transformation and mythoology.

Jeannie is talented mixed-media artist working in ceramics, painting, photography and found objects.

The exhibit  runs from September 28, 2010 through November 2, 2010. An opening reception is schedule for Thursday, September 30, 2010 at 1pm.

25 things that made Genesee County famous

The Holland Land Office Museum announced on its blog yesterday that on June 13, it will begin an "online exhibit" series of 25 things that made Genesee County famous.

For this online exhibit, a panel of 15 people spent six months sifting through 100s of things know world wide. It was the panel's job to come up with a list of 25 things that made Genesee County famous. Every week, until November 28, 2008 the Holland Land Office Museum will release another item.

Cool idea, and it's interesting that this physical museum has chosen the digital world to highlight such a potentially fascinating list of events, people and items.

Anybody want to guess what some of these 25 things might be?  Leave a comment.  (I'm guessing #1 is anti-masonry and the Morgan Affair. Joseph Mancuso and the business incubator have to be pretty high up there, too.)
