Elba Fire, with assistance from Mercy Flight/EMS, the Sheriff's Office, Emergency Dispatch, Byron Fire, H.E. Turner Funeral Homes, and the Office of Emergency Services, staged the annual pre-prom DWI drill for seniors at Elba High School on Wednesday morning.

The drill stages the scene of a DWI-related fatal accident. The purpose is to give students a realistic view of what happens at a serious injury/fatal accident scene and how it impacts family, friends, and community members.

Deputies Andrew Mullen, with partner K-9 Frankie, and Deputy James Stack, with partner K-9 Rayzor, visited the Elba Volunteer Fire Department Chicken BBQ on Sunday to provide a demonstration of how K-9s work with officers.

The Elba Boy Scouts were also on hand to help with the BBQ at the Elba Fire Rec Hall on Route 98.

The fundraiser was sold out.

Cindy Morgan, as she's done in past years for the Elba Senior Prom Drill, played the distraught mother who arrives at an accident scene to find her daughter is dead.

The prom drill is organized by the Elba Volunteer Fire Department with an eye toward making the accident response appear as realistic as possible so students get a stronger impression of the dangers of distracted driving or drinking and driving.

Morgan plays her part well, screaming things like, "She's still breathing," "Nobody performed CPR. How come nobody is performing CPR?", "My daughter is going to college."
