Press Release:

Genesee County is upgrading essential infrastructure at County Building No. 1 and the Old County Courthouse to address water penetration concerns and ensure the safety of all occupants and visitors.

Project Details:

  • May 3 - Protective enclosures will be installed around entrances to County Building No. 1 to ensure safety during roof and exterior masonry work.

  • During the project, all entrances will remain accessible.
  • A protective enclosure for material storage will temporarily block off the central sidewalk, but access will still be available on both the east and west sides of the courtyard.
  • The projects are expected to be completed by the end of June with a 2-week additional window for inclement weather.

Although minimal disruption to daily operations is expected, a safe working zone is of top priority, and the following safety measures have been implemented:

  • Designated areas for materials and equipment storage.
  • Parking adjustments, including dumpsters in a street parking zone and coned-off contractor access to the lawn.
  • Protective enclosures around entrances to County Building No. 1
  • Please see the included staging plan for more details.

We appreciate the cooperation and understanding of all during this construction period.

Lowest bid still over budget for new roof on County Building #1

By Howard B. Owens

The lowest bid for a new roof on County Building #1 was higher than anticipated and the Genesee County Legislature is being asked to increase the budget allotment for the project.

Assistant County Manager Frank Ciaccia said the lowest bid came in $2,500 more than budgeted, and the original budget contained wiggle room for unanticipated expenses.

Ciaccia asked the Ways and Means Committee today to transfer $12,000 from the county's sales tax reserve to cover the more than $214,000 cost of the roof replacement plus any unforeseen expenses.

"We don't know what we'll find when we take the roof off," Ciaccia said. "We may find some additional damage."

County Building #1 is the main administration building at 14 W. Main St., Batavia. The original section was built in 1926, with additions being made in 1951 and in the 1990s.

The roof hasn't been replaced since 1985.

The new roof will be a rubber material.

The lowest of four bids came from Elmer W. Davis, Inc., of Rochester.

The committee approved both the budget adjustment and awarding the bid to Davis. The resolutions will be considered by the full legislature at its next meeting.
