The Batavia Society of Artists is hosting artist Kevin Feary in a Plein Art Painting (painting outdoors) demonstration on Tuesday, July 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. 

The demonstration will be held at Karen's Yarn, Paper and Scissors, in the back yard, at 550 E. Main St., Batavia. Bring a lawn chair. 

Non-members are welcome for a $5 fee.

Kevin will base a quick demo on how to capture light effects through observing how the light hits a bush or potted plant or some other simple object. There will be something in Karen's backyard we can use to get sunlight where he can demonstrate how the light hits an object and how we can create an impression of that on our canvas.  He will also try to demonstrate how to paint scrub and weeds to add interest. People can bring their paint gear and give it a try, kind of like a short class, hands-on thing.

Kevin will do his best to keep it quick so people can try it if they want.

The Batavia Society of Artists is hosting artist Colette Savage Tuesday, June 14th at 7 p.m. at Go-Art/Seymour Place, 201 E. Main St., Batavia.  Colette will be demonstrating painting with pastels.  Non-members are welcome for a $5 fee.

We will also have a very affordable Art Supply and Frame sale before the demo starting at 6:30 p.m., at the break, and after the demo.  The supplies and frames have been donated by the Virginia Carr-Mumford Family to help with the cost of artist demonstrations.

Award-winning artist, Colette Savage, is a native Rochesterian whose love of the area in which she grew up is reflected in the art she produces.  A life-long artist, Colette has painted en plein air for 18 years.  Most of her work is done in pastel, a medium with incredible versatility.  Colette feels that there is always something new and exciting to be discovered when painting with pastel.

Colette received her BA from SUNY College at Brockport but feels that her greatest education has come from frequently working on location where the challenge to produce a finished painting before the light has changed has taught her to work faster, more accurately, and efficiently.

Colette is a member of Suburban Rochester Art Group, the Greater Rochester Plein Air Painters and the Pastel Society of Western NY.

When not focusing on art, Colette works at Monroe 2 – Orleans BOCES as a Student Behavioral Assistant and job coach, working with young adults with developmental disabilities at the University of Rochester Medical Center.

 

The Batavia Society of Artists' Member Spring Art Show opened last week at the Richmond Memorial Library's Gallery Room, 19 Ross St., Batavia.

The event included awarding the Virginia Carr-Mumford Scholarship to Ben Wilkins.

The Batavia Society of Artists' Member Spring Art Show is in the Richmond Memorial Library's Gallery Room, 19 Ross St., Batavia  till May 26th.  There are 15 artists contributing to the show.  We are showcasing Rick Ellingham as our Featured Artist in this show. There are a total of 60 pieces of art.  The Public is invited to the Free Opening Reception on Tuesday May 10th, 6:30 - 8pm.  The artwork is being Judged by Retired Middle School Art Teacher Kathy Schwank.  Winners will be announced at the opening reception.

We are also having a Silent Auction on a painting donated to the Batavia Society of Artists by Adrian Morris.  He painted this while demonstrating Acrylic Slap & Dash Landscape at our February demo.

Set the date aside for a fun night on April 12 from 7 to 9 PM at the GoArt-Seymour Art Center at 201 E.Main St.  Batavia Society of Artists is proud to be able to present the opportunity for its members as well as guests to experience the intuitive painting process. This process is a tool to allow artists the experience to be inside color, paint, and process. Reference has been made to being spontaneous and to not over-think your painting. Taking away all expectations for your art may free your mind from the normal constraints of “getting it perfect”.

Batavia Society of Artists will have a program in collaboration with the Genesee Wind Ensemble, led by Conductor Philip Briatico, who has been in the music education field for 15 years. His background includes music education at  Buffalo State College and the University of Buffalo. He has extensive experience in conducting and holds the GIML Level 1 certificate. Mr. Briatico has been a member of Genesee Chorale and the Eastman Community School Music Educator’s Wind Ensemble and is also co-manager of the Batavia Swing Band. He currently works at Niagara Falls City School District and has worked at Elba and Warsaw Central Schools. 

As the ensemble plays in various parts of the facility, artists and guests are invited to “let the music take you” and practice this free-form, loose style of painting. This promises to be a new experience for many painters and may even inspire a new category at local art shows.  No over-thinking or evaluating your work….. after all, it’s ART!
All members are welcome, the non-member fee is $5.00

The Batavia Society of Artists is hosting artist Karen Crittenden on Tuesday at Go-Art/Seymour Place, 201 E. Main St, Batavia at 7 p.m.

She will be doing a Drum Fun hands-on demo with African Drums. Also doing a transfer of a Mandela onto a drum.  Non-Members are welcome for a $5 fee.

Nicole Greenbaum won "Best in Show," as selected in voting by attendees, at the opening of the Batavia Society of Artists Winter Show at the Richmond Memorial Library.  Her painting, a watercolor, top right, is entitled "Silent Observations." 

Madeleine Rusch is the featured artist in the show.  Rusch has been painting for about 15 years and is mostly self-taught though attended classes with John Hodgins and Dennis Wood. Her main interest is acrylic paint. She has participated in many art shows and recently won Best in Show at the Alden Art Show.

BIO: Shauna Blake, Artist

Shauna Blake started painting in her early teens and has devoted her entire working life to her artwork. She has a love for nature and the outdoors and uses the inspiration and energy it provides to create her art.

She paints in a wide variety of mediums including, watercolors, acrylics, pen and ink, and silk dyes.

In 1994 she graduated from The Art Institute of Pittsburgh with a major in Graphic Design and Illustration. She worked in the Graphic Design field for 7 years before joining her husband, Brendan in his glass art business in 2001. Here she expanded her art by studying and creating lampwork glass beads.

Shauna currently sells her hand-painted silk scarves, silk ribbons, and art prints worldwide on her website. www.QuintessenceSilk.com and on the popular Etsy handmade crafts site online.

To help celebrate its 100th Anniversary, the Stafford Country Club invited members of the Batavia Society of Artists to paint pictures of the club grounds, and tonight those paintings were sold to members. Twenty percent of the proceeds go to the club's scholarship fund with the remainder of the sale price going to the individual artist.

Two new shows opened at GOART! and will be on display until October 28th. David Francis Burke, pictured above, has his exhibit "Human/Nature" on display as well as The Batavia Society of Artist have their annual exhibit up on display with quite a variety of works from the club members. GOART! is open 11 am to 9 pm Wednesday to Friday and 9 am to 2 pm on Saturdays. 

Members of the Batavia Society of Artists participated Tuesday evening in a Plein Air painting exhibition at the Stafford Country Club.  

The artists spread out over the golf course to paint various landscapes of the club.  The event was organized by club member Mari-Ellen Lamont as part of the club's 100th Anniversary Celebration.

The paintings will be sold at auction to benefit Stafford Country Club Scholarship Fund.

The Batavia Society of Artist is hosting artist Collette Savage on Tuesday, July 13th at 6 p.m. at DeWitt Recreation Area at 115 Cedar St. in Batavia. She will be demonstrating pastels en plein air (outside).

We will be in the smallest pavilion on the left side of the park. Nonmembers welcome for a $5 fee. Please bring a chair in case Savage wants to get closer to the water.

Savage has been an artist since she could pick up a pencil. She received her bachelor’s degree in art from SUNY Brockport but has found the best education she received has come from sources outside of academia.

She has taken classes from local artists including Sari Gaby and Thomas Keggler, as well as nationally known artists Albert Handel and Marc Hanson.  Nevertheless, working directly from life on a regular basis has been her greatest teacher.

Savage has worked in pastels for the past 20 years and continues to be fascinated by all the creative ways that pastels can be used. An avid plein air pastel painter, she teaches classes in pastel painting and plein air for the beginner where she can share her knowledge and love of what she does.

Savage is a member of Suburban Rochester Art Group, Greater Rochester Plein Air Painters and the Pastel Society of Western New York. In addition to teaching classes, she does workshops and demonstrations.

Savage enjoys sharing her knowledge of pastel and plein air painting. Recently, Colette has begun recording videos on YouTube, which demonstrate pastel painting techniques. Here is the link.

Did you ever want to add some bushes or cattails to a painting but thought what you were looking at was just too busy or complicated?

Well it can be done simply and it doesn't have to be daunting.

The Batavia Society of Artists is hosting artist Kevin Feary (top photo) outside at DeWitt Recreation Area on Cedar Street in the City of Batavia at 6 p.m. on Tuesday June 8th.

He is demonstrating methods for plein-air painting  -- all different kinds of landscape elements -- bushes, reeds, a pond, and any general scrub you may see in a field or hedgerow -- using simple application methods and color mixtures.

All types of brushes, pallet knives, paper towels, your fingers or whatever tools are at hand can be used.

The live demo will be in Pavilion #3, the smallest one. Please bring a chair in case Kevin wants to get closer to the pond!

He has taken classes and workshops from local and nationally known artists throughout his career and has been honing his skills studying, drawing and painting. He creates commissioned paintings and murals, and paints from life through figure/portrait sessions and plein air.

He teaches plein-air and portrait workshops and demonstrates for art groups here and nationwide.

Feary is a member of The All Weather Gang, the Batavia Society of Artists, a signature member of the Genesee Valley Plein Aire Painters, signature member of the Rochester Art Club, Penn Yan Art Guild, and an associate member of the National Oil & Acrylic Painters' Society.

On Tuesday, May 11th, the Batavia Society of Artists will host Shauna Blake at 7 p.m. for a virtual demonstration via Zoom of watercolors. This demonstration will be hands-on and Blake will encourage you to paint along with her.

You can use whatever materials you have to paint with and she will be demonstrating tips and techniques that she uses. If you don't want to paint along, you can just attend to watch.

The demonstration is designed to be at your comfort level. Please consider joining us, even if you are unable to attend for the whole demonstration.

The Batavia Society of Artists held its first -- and they hope it will become an annual event -- Tabletop People's Choice Awards at Eli Fish Brewing Co. in March.  

More than 400 people voted.

The Batavia Society of Artists is having a Virtual Hands-on Art Demonstration by artist Karen Crittenden at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13th.

It is open to nonmembers for a $5 fee, please go to the society's Facebook page to sign up. Members will receive an email with Zoom meeting info.

Crittenden is a local mixed-media artist and photographer who owns and operates a niche craft store -- Karen's Yarn Paper Scissors at 550 E. Main St. in Batavia.

She teaches there and offers a variety of lessons. She is a lifelong artist, learner and enjoys sharing what she does with others. 

To play along with this mixed-media offering you will need:

• Scissors or a craft knife;
• Magazines with your images pre-chosen;
• Old book pages -- torn or cut out of the book;
• Liquid white glue and a glue stick;
• Acrylic paint -- any kind, three colors, whether you mix them or have, your choice;
• Substrate to put all your treasures onto -- (I will be working on a cereal box side.) (The Dollar Tree store has 8x10 canvas boards, which will work.);
• Paper towels or an old damp rag for your hands;
• Old paint brush any size;
• Newspaper or brown paper to cover your work area.

Optional

• Bits of fabric, ribbon or Rick-rack;
• Cut out letters;
• Flat back stones or glass pebbles (need to have a really good glue);
• Sharpie or posca markers;
• **Heat tool or hair dryer to dry layers.

Batavia Society of Artists will hold its first ever Tabletop Art Show from March 1 through 31.

This show is made up of 43 pieces, 15 of which are featured on the tabletops (placemats) of local restaurants.

The 15 featured pieces will also be on display at the Eli Fish Brewing Company, 109 Main St., Batavia. Please stop in to Eli Fish during the month of March to view the artwork, since there will be no opening reception because of COVID-19.
