Pursel, Blaun wear King & Queen doubles crown; GRUSBC tournament opens Friday

By Mike Pettinella

Batavian Jim Pursel enjoyed a profitable weekend, teaming with Oakfield resident Robin Blaun to capture the T.F. Brown’s King & Queen mixed doubles handicap tournament at Mancuso Bowling Center on Saturday and then joining forces with nine fellow league bowlers to cash twice at the Bob Bertram Memorial handicap no-tap tournament at Mount Morris Lanes on Sunday.

At the King & Queen event, Pursel and Blaun outlasted 62 other couples – defeating Curtis Foss of Medina and Brianna Larson of North Tonawanda, 492-483, in the title match – to pocket the $500 top prize.

"Robin was phenomenal ... she carried us," said Pursel, crediting Blaun for averaging 185 for the tournament -- 22 pins over her average.

But Pursel was being humble in his assessment as he put up high scores all day, including a 269 in the championship match.

"It was fun in the final game, bowling against Curits and his partner and matching him bomb for bomb," he said.

Blaun chipped in with 189 and, with their 34 pins handicap, edged Foss and Larson, who posted 258 and 225, respectively.

Pursel and Blaun registered 1,316 in the three-game qualifier to finish in the seventh position. The top 16 teams advanced to match play, led by Mark Brown of Attica and Traci Spanitz of Rochester, who had 1,432.  Foss and Larson were the second-high qualifiers with 1,415.

In match play, Pursel and Blaun posted victories over Naomi and Mickey Hyde of Le Roy (with Blaun posting a 226 game), Kai Clark and Mary Jo Brenner of Rochester (with Pursel rolling 266), and Steve Dorobiala and Holly Johnson of Buffalo, before facing Foss and Larson.

Foss and Larson split $300 for placing second, while Dorobiala and Johnson, and Mario and Kara Mangiola of Rochester each split $200 for finishing third/fourth.

Other local cashers were Fred Gravanda of Batavia (with Sarah Germano of Rochester), Chris Bardol and Caycee Landers of Brockport, Mike and Heather Johnson of Batavia, Dean Cadieux Jr. and Kristin Thompson of Oakfield, and Rich Wagner of Batavia and Darleen Balduf of Byron.

At the 19th annual Bob Bertram Memorial, the Pursel group comprised of members of the North Pole League on Thursday nights at Mancuso’s formed two teams, with each bowling twice, and walked away with the $1,000 first prize and $300 third prize.

Members of the first-place team were Mike Johnson, Tom Baker, Matt Balduf, Mark Brown and Denny Rogers, and members of the third-place team were Joe Trigilio, Rob Stefani, Jason Quilliam, Mike Lambert and Pursel.

LOCAL BOWLERS BATTLE TOUGH CONDITIONS AT NYS MASTERS

While none of the eight Genesee Region bowlers advanced to the match play portion of the NYS Masters Championship on March 3 at Allie Brandt Lanes in Lockport, all of them deserve credit for taking on the challenging Sport lane condition and battling against the best of the best in New York State.

Medina residents Curtis Foss and Scott Allis were stopped by one sub-par game out of their five qualifying games, each missing the cut on the first squad by about 50 pins.

On the second squad, Gray Jr. also was thwarted by one low game and missed the cut by just 30 pins.

To illustrate the oil pattern’s difficulty, it took a score of 966 – a 193 average -- on the second squad (out of 71 bowlers) to advance.

Also competing in the tournament were Jim Foss and Aaron Verheyn of Medina, Kevin Gray Sr. of Honeoye Falls, Jared Allen of Oakfield and Frank Jarkiewicz of Byron.

Kristina Szczerbinski of North Tonawanda became the first woman NYS Masters champion, defeating PBA standout Brad Angelo of Lockport in the final match for the $2,000 first prize.

PERRY, MOUNT MORRIS, BERGEN YOUTHS TRIUMPH

Dennis Van Duser and Matt Hurlburt of Perry Bowling Center combined for a 1,350 score with handicap to each win $100 scholarships and trophies at the GRUSBC Association Youth Doubles Tournament at Scopano's Lanes in Oakfield last weekend.

The winning duo in Division A topped second-place Ryleigh Culver and Ethan Cramer of Medina Lanes by 115 pins. Culver and Cramer and third-place Aaron Leone and Samantha Hyde of Le Roy Legion Lanes also won trophies.

In Division B, Brad June and Alexis Patterson of Mount Morris Lanes placed first with 1,314 (winning $100 scholarships and trophies), while Paige Snook and Matt Baker of Albion, and Brooke Jurek and Van Duser of Perry placed second and third, respectively.

In Division C, Brendan Pimm and Megan Jarkiewicz of Bergen took first with 1,261 (winning $100 scholarships and trophies), and were followed by Dominic LaPiana and Hanna McKenzie of Mount Morris, and Josh and Tony Sprague of Batavia.

ROSE GARDEN TEAM HOLDS BIG LEAD IN GR YOUTH TRAVEL

The Rose Garden I team upended Batavia Strike Force, 13-6, last week at Scopano’s Lanes in Oakfield to move comfortably ahead with two weeks remaining in the Genesee Region Youth Travel League.

The team of Devon Zinter, Madelynn Pimm, Brooke Jarkiewicz and Michael Sardou is 19.5 points up on Oak Orchard I and Batavia X-Factor with only sessions on March 25 at Mancuso Bowling Center and April 8 (position round) at Oak Orchard Bowl in Albion.

Individually, Dennis Van Duser of Perry led the boys with a 279 game and 660 series, while Haylee Thornley of Batavia X-Factor paced the girls with a 237 game and 554 series.

Other high series were by Matt Hurlburt of Perry, 654; Tony Sprague of Batavia X-Factor, 607; Samantha Hyde of Le Roy, 544, and Paige Snook of Oak Orchard I, 522.

ROCHESTER’S DAN VICK WINS SUPER BUD BOWL IN OSWEGO

More than 1,000 entrants tried their hand at the weeklong Super Bud Bowl at Lighthouse Lanes in Oswego last week and, when the smoke had cleared, Rochester left-hander Dan Vick – arguably the best bowler in the Flower City – drove home with the $5,500 first place check.

Vick, 31, defeated high qualifier Art Oliver Jr., 219-213, in the championship match. He did so in dramatic style, coming through with three strikes in the 10th frame to overtake the Hamilton, Ontario, Canada lefty, who had doubled in the 10th to put the pressure on Vick.

Oliver earned $2,800 for placing second.

Two Perry residents cashed on the extremely tough Sport condition: Matt Slocum, who rolled 821 for his four games and Brett Van Duser, who recorded 798.

Elba repeats as Section V champions in girls basketball

By Howard B. Owens

For the second time in two years, the Lady Lancers of Elba are the Section V Class D2 champions, beating Andover in a tight game, 47-42.

It was one of those games that could have gone either way until there were less than 10 seconds on the clock and Elba had possession of the ball.

Coach Tom Redband gave a lot of credit to the win to his lone senior on the team, captain Emily Reynolds. Reynolds was the tournament MVP, giving her back-to-back MVP titles.

"(The key was) having Reynolds in there as the two-time MVP," Redband said. "The girls were able to keep their poise and take care of the ball and get some stops on defense. If you’re going to win, you want to get those stops."

Reynolds said her role was to keep her teammates calm and remind them to "play Elba basketball."

"My heart was beating fast almost the whole game but I didn’t doubt my girls for one second," Reynolds said. "I had full confidence in us. We prepared really hard."

Championships in her junior and senior seasons means a lot to her, said Reynolds, who scored 23 points.

"I hold it really dear to my heart," Reynolds said. "All of these girls are my family and it means everything to be able to win and have another championship before I graduate. I don’t want my season to end. I want to extend it as long as possible."

Maddie Muehlig scored 11 points and hit five of six free-throw attempts, including two shots to help seal the win with less than a second left to play.

Leah Bezon scored six points.

Redband said he and the girls are proud to represent Elba.

"The girls do that tremendously," Redband said. "They play the right way. They’re good sports. They’re nice people. It means a lot to me."

Notre Dame wins Class C1 Section V title in girls basketball

By Howard B. Owens

The Lady Irish staged a dramatic second-half come back Saturday at Rush-Henrietta, overcoming a 13-point third-quarter deficit, to beat Letchworth 42-35 and claim the Section V Class C1 crown.

It came down to defense, said Head Coach Tom McCulley, whose team held Letchworth to nine points in the second half and prevented them from scoring for more than eight minutes at one point.

"That’s who we are," McCulley said. "Hard work and gritty and score enough on offense and turn it up on defense and make teams uncomfortable."

Callie McCulley's aggression, driving for layups, with Margaret Sullivan and Stevie Wilcox attacking the boards, combined with good shooting from the free-throw line helped turn the tide.

"We’ve preached all season long, rebounds and free throws," McCulley said. "The fundamentals of the game, when you’ve got evenly matched teams, that’s what it comes down to. A lot of these games come down to free throw percentages and who wins that battles on the boards."

He praised the hard work and fight put up by Letchworth. They came out of the gate aggressive and McCulley said that put his team back in its heels. When they were down by 13, he called a timeout and told them they needed to grind it out.

"I just told them you've got to contest every shot," McCulley said. "You’ve got to go after every loose ball. This is sectional finals. There’s no tomorrow if you don’t win today."

Callie McCulley finished with 15 points and was named tournament MVP. Stevie Wilcox and Margaret Sutherland scored eight points each. They were both named to the all-tournament team.

Perhaps overlooked in the accolades but not overlooked by her coaches and teammates, McCulley I said, is Morgan Rhodes, who scored nine points.

"Morgan is a spark plug," McCulley said. "I ask her to defend. I ask her to help with ball handling. She can knock down shots. She’s not afraid of the big stage and the big moment. She played huge the other night against Red Creek. She played huge for us tonight. She’s one of those unsung heroes of this tournament but coaches realize what she brings to the table."

Joe Zambito named new head coach for Notre Dame football

By Howard B. Owens

Press release:

Notre Dame announces the hiring of Joe Zambito as their Varsity Football Coach replacing Rick Mancuso who retired to spend more time with his family.

He was a highly successful Genesee Region Football and Basketball Coach at Elba from 1999 through 2006. Zambito joined the Notre Dame coaching family in 2010 as a volunteer coach on Coach Mancuso’s football staff a position he held for the past seven seasons.

His relationship with the Notre Dame side of one of Section V’s biggest rivalries began a few years earlier in the fall of 2007 with the enrollment of his nephew Vincent (Class of 2011).

It continued for the next 11 years as nephews Gianni (Class of 2010 and a current Social Studies teacher at ND), Luca (Class of 2016 Valedictorian), Nico (Class of 2018) and cousin Anthony (Class of 2021) all made Notre Dame their high school choice.

During his eight-year stint as the head football coach, his Elba teams were recognized in both the GR and Section V as being physical, well-prepared and disciplined football squads. They excelled on the field winning 3 GR Championships and the 2005 Section V Class D Championship, an accomplishment that led to Zambito being recognized as 2005 Section V Coach of the Year.

He was also a very successful basketball coach winning GR championships in 2005 and 2006, and a Sectional title in 2005 when he was both the Section V and Genesee Region Coach of the Year. During his coaching tenure, his teams also earned numerous NYS Scholar-Athlete team recognition.

Zambito, who is employed as both Race Secretary and Track Announcer at Batavia Downs, holds a bachelor's degree from SUNY Brockport. He is married to the former Kelly Degenhardt whose mother Anne Palmer (Degenhardt) is a 1966 graduate of Notre Dame.

When commenting on his appointment, Coach Zambito said,” I am looking forward to working with the student-athletes at Notre Dame to help them grow, progress and maximize their potential both on and off the field. Here Come the Irish!”

GRUSBC directors hope format changes spark increase in tournament entries

By Mike Pettinella

The bowlers spoke and the Genesee Region USBC directors listened. And, as a result, the 12th annual GRUSB Association Tournament later this month includes a Scratch Division and a handicap base of 215 – down from 230.

Now, let’s see if the changes pay off in increased entries for the tournament, which is scheduled for March 16-18, 23-25 at Mount Morris Lanes (Team event) and Livingston Lanes in Geneseo (Doubles & Singles events).

Competition will take place in three divisions -- Open (men and women), Scratch (men and women) and Women.  In the Open and Scratch divisions, teams are comprised of five players; in the Women's division, teams consist of four players.

Handicap is set at 90 percent of 215 in the Open and 90 percent of 200 in the Women's.

Last year, the handicap base was at 230, and that drew complaints from the higher average bowlers who felt they were at a competitive disadvantage.

GRUSBC directors took that into consideration in lowering the base to 215 – and also brought back a Scratch division for those bowlers wishing to compete against other teams without handicap.

As of Wednesday, all squads are open except for the Team squad at 11 a.m. on March 18. The maximum number of team entries is 80.

Entry fees are $25 per person per event and $10 for optional All-Events.

A chart showing the current entries can be found at www.bowlgr.com.

To reserve your spot, call 585-861-0404 or send an email to mikep@bowlgr.com.

Batavia loses a close game in final minutes to HFL 45-40

By Steve Ognibene

A tightly matched game #6 seed Batavia Lady Devils came out playing with heart and soul to the end versus #3 seed Honeoye Falls Lima last evening at Penfield High School.

Batavia came out flat down by five points but Freshman Kenzie Reigle helped drive them to a 9-9 after the first quarter.

Second quarter Batavia went up on top leading by as much as four points 17-13 but HFL came to tie it before junior Jenae Colkey sunk a two-pointer to give Batavia a lead at the half 19-17.

Batavia came out of the locker increasing the lead by five points 23-18 but Freshman Hannah Selke hit four three-pointers in the quarter to help HFL carry a big lead 30-25 going into the fourth.

Elba Lady Lancers have chance to repeat as sectional champions after beating Romulus

By Howard B. Owens

A big part of Elba's game plan going into Tuesday night's Section V semifinal playoff game against Romulus in Dansville was to stop point guard Mary Ellen Querrie.

That proved a tough task. Her leadership and her 19 points kept Romulus in the game up until the closing minutes.

"We had a tough time with her," said Head Coach Tom Redband.

Even so, Elba was able to regain the lead in the fourth quarter after giving it up in the third and held on to win, 58-55.

Redband said a lot of credit for the win goes to Leah Bezon. The freshman scored 18 points, which included hitting a trio of threes.

Romulus ran a press all night, which produced some turnovers, but Redband said Brynn Walczak, Isabella Riner, and Maddie Muehlig did an effective job of breaking it.

"Those three girls, specifically, did a good job," Redband said.

Walczak finished with 12 points, as did Muelig. Riner scored five.

Redband said after Romulus made its third-quarter run, "It was looking a little bleak for us," but the Lady Lancers held it together.

"Another key (to the game) for us was not getting down on ourselves," Redband said. "We had some an adversity. Romulus went on a good run and the girls stuck with it, made some big shots and didn’t give up."

Elba faces Andover on Friday at Letchworth for the Section V Class D2 championship. Game time is 6 p.m.

Pavilion also has a Section V Class D1 championship game that night at Letchworth at 8 p.m. against Wheatland.

Semifinals tonight, Notre Dame plays Red Creek in Class C1 and Oakfield-Alabama plays South Seneca in Class C2.

Pembroke Dragons will get a shot Friday at a Section V title

By Howard B. Owens

For only the third time in program history, the Pembroke Dragons will play for a Section V boys basketball championship on Friday after beating Avon 65-50 in a semifinal game played last night in Warsaw.

"It’s a big deal for the program," said Head Coach Matt Shay. "Basketball hasn’t always something that the school has had a lot of success in, so it’s really exciting to see this group buy in and work and get that success."

On Friday, the Dragons fell behind in the second quarter but then went on a 14-0 run to close out the half and go into the locker room with a 10-point lead.

While Avon pulled close a couple of times in the second-half, Pembroke remained in control of the game.

"The lapses that I really didn't like were in the middle of the third and beginning of the fourth quarter whey they (Avon) started to make a run," Shay said. "They were making good cuts and we were caught sleeping, staring at the ball."

Shay said he was proud of Reid Miano's performance, who struggled to score in the first half but kept his head in the game and finished with 16 points on the night.

"We have so much depth and talent that we can survive if he doesn't have a great night," Shay said. "Some teams, their star guy starts off slow, they’re in trouble, but I really talked with him about just keep playing. You can be our best player and still not score. I’m so proud of him because at the end of this game, he didn’t do much in the first half, but in the second half, he really came alive."

Lucas Kohorst scored 20 points, Zach VonKramer and Ethan Stone each scored 10.

The Dragons, with a record of 23-0 is the #2 seed in the Class C1 bracket. On Friday, they play the #1 seed, Northstar Christian (22-1) for the championship at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester.

Scoreless 2nd quarter for Blue Devils foreshadows upset loss to HFL

By Howard B. Owens

The #3 seed in Class A2, the Batavia Blue Devils, was up Saturday in a Section V playoff game played in Batavia, by the #6 seed, Honeoye Falls-Lima, 48-41.

While Batavia jumped out to a 17-7 first quarter lead, behind the hot hand of Tee Sean Ayala, who scored 13 of his 20 points in the first eight minutes, HFL seemed to have figured out how to slow Ayala down. HFL held Ayala to seven points the rest of the way.

Worse, the Blue Devils didn't score at all in the second quarter and were held to 10 points in the fourth quarter -- a quarter in which HFL seemed to find it impossible to miss a shot, scoring 17 points.

Naz Pratt scored nine points for the Blue Devils and Antwan Odom scored six.

Top scorer for HFL was Garret Ruff with 13.
