Second-quarter run lifts Elba past Byron-Bergen

By Nick Sabato

In a meeting of cross-town rivals, Elba took down Byron-Bergen, 55-43.

The visiting Lancers used a 15-1 run, 11-1 to end the first half, to pull away from the Bees in a Genesee Region League matchup.

Elba, missing some players, was forced to insert new pieces into the starting lineup. One of those players was Dan Scott, who had a huge game, finishing with a career-high 25 points in the victory.

“It was a good time for him to step up,” said Elba Head Coach Mark Beehler. “Dan, not having a ton of starts this year, he really came through. I knew he was a good ball player, but he really took charge tonight.”

Byron-Bergen, who was also missing a few key players, found their offense when Ranjit Singh hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to single digits with two minutes to play in the third quarter, but Elba responded quickly to end the quarter with six straight points and would never look back.

“We were getting stops on defense and some steals, but we were getting anxious on offense and not taking our time,” Beehler said. “We just needed to slow down and run some offense, when we did that we started to get back on a roll.”

The matchup between schools 10 miles apart is also intriguing because they have merged in several other sports, including football. In fact, eight members of the football team were also members of the basketball team at each school.

“I think it’s fun for the kids to come here, and see their fellow football players and see familiar faces, but when it gets to the court, it’s game time and it’s cutthroat,” Beehler said. “It’s always good sportsmanship between the two schools and good camaraderie.”

One of those players, Nate Jonathan, helped pace Elba (7-5) with seven points and 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Jesse Pflaumer added 15 points and eight rebounds for the Lancers, who currently own a three-game winning streak.

Jeff Maskell had a team-high 11 points for Byron-Bergen, who falls to 2-9 on the season.

Monroe sweeps Genesee

By Andrew Crofts

Riding a three-game losing skid, the Genesee Community College men's basketball schedule did not get any easier on Tuesday night. The Monroe Community College Tribunes, the second-ranked team in the NJCAA Division II, came to town sporting a 14-2 record and proved why they are off to such a fast start this season.

MCC began the night on an 8-0 run and built a twenty-five point lead behind John Velez-Rivera's five first half three-pointers. He was a perfect 5-5 from beyond the arc in the opening half.

The Cougars were within four about ten minutes into the game before a Velez-Rivera layup sparked a 16-4 run to give the Tribunes control. MCC converted on ten first half three-pointers and led 54-29 at the break.

The second half was more of the same as Monroe cashed in five more times from long-range, upping their lead into the 40's for the later part of the game. The Tribunes would cruise to a 106-58 win.

E.J. Blackwell scored 18 points in the losing effort for GCC and Terryl Coombs added 16 points and nine rebounds.

Velez-Rivera finished with 23 points for MCC.

Genesee now drops to 0-2 in the conference and are 9-9 on the season. They will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Niagara County Community College for a 3pm start.

The Genesee Community College women's basketball team fell to conference rival and Division I opponent Monroe Community College on Tuesday night, 88-27.

Paige Hennings scored eleven points and also grabbed nine rebounds for GCC, but turnovers were once again an issue with the Lady Cougars. Monroe forced 31 turnovers on the night and capitalized with 49 points off of takeaways.

GCC was held to just nine points in the second half.

(#15 Dashawna Jenifer tries to work by an MCC defender)

Dashawna Jenifer chipped in nine points for Genesee, who falls to 0-2 in conference play and 1-12 on the season.

The Lady Cougars will return to conference action on Saturday afternoon when they travel to Niagara County Community College for a 1pm start.

Notre Dame dethrones Batavia for Rotary Tournament Crown

By Nick Sabato

Notre Dame dethroned Batavia as the Batavia Rotary Tournament Champions, 41-38 at Genesee Community College.

On Tuesday night, Batavia was able to overcome an early deficit to defeat Perry, but a slow start in the first quarter against Notre Dame doomed the Blue Devils in the championship game.

Notre Dame raced out to an early 7-0 lead to start the contest and held Batavia without a field goal in the first quarter. The Blue Devils went 0-for-12 in the frame and fell behind 14-3 after the first quarter. The Irish got a huge spark from senior Riley Norton, who after going 3-for-14 from the field on Tuesday, scored eight of her game-high 20 points in the quarter.

“I didn’t play my best on Tuesday,” Norton said. “But, I’m a senior and I wanted to come out tonight and help my team any way that I could. We know Batavia is a great team and tonight I was able to make some shots early.”

Batavia was able to right the ship in the second quarter, outscoring the Fighting Irish 15-8 to cut the halftime deficit to four. With the Irish keying on stars Tiara Filbert and Madison McCulley, Essence Williams led the comeback effort with nine of her team-high 11 points in the second quarter. Williams also knocked away a Notre Dame rebound right to Filbert, who laid it in just as time expired to keep the Blue Devils within striking distance at halftime.

“Offensively, Notre Dame did a great job of speeding up the game and we couldn’t handle that pace,” said Batavia Head Coach Bill Wade. “So, we decided to slow things down and play at an offensive pace that we were comfortable playing at and we were able to get back into it.”

In the third quarter, Batavia continued to scratch their way back into the game, cutting the lead to two at one point, before Notre Dame went on a 5-2 run to end the quarter. Norton would score five points in the frame, including one of her four three-pointers on the night.

“Riley is our senior and our go-to player,” said Notre Dame Head Coach Dave Pero. “She didn’t shoot particularly well on Tuesday, but tonight her shots were falling and she was huge for us.”

The Blue Devils once again made their push in the third quarter, but each time Batavia would gain momentum, the Irish would respond with a timely basket. McCulley would have to leave the game midway through the fourth quarter with an apparent ankle injury, but she returned with just over two minutes to play and made her presence known immediately by connecting on a deep three-pointer in front of the Batavia bench to cut the lead to 38-36.

Notre Dame responded at the other end of the floor, as Emma Francis hit a foul-line jumper to extend the Irish lead to four with just over a minute to play. After a Batavia free throw at the other end, the Blue Devils were able to get the ball back after a controversial turnover call in the waning seconds, but Notre Dame was able to come up with a defensive stand to wrap up the victory.

“It’s always great to win a tournament like this,” Pero said. “I always call this our mid-term exam, to show us where we are in terms of sectionals. Playing competition the likes of Batavia really gives us a good idea of where we stand as a team and how we can improve the rest of the season.”

Norton was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, adding five rebounds and four steals to go along with her 20 points. She was joined on the all-tournament squad by teammate Mel Taylor, who finished with 12 points, six rebounds and three steals for Notre Dame (8-1).

Batavia (8-4) was represented by Filbert and McCulley on the team, as Filbert scored eight points, grabbed six rebounds, five steals and four assists, while McCulley chipped in nine points on the night.

Notre Dame, Batavia to play in Rotary Tournament Finals

By Nick Sabato

Notre Dame used a 13-2 second-quarter run to edge past Alexander in the first round of the Batavia Rotary Tournament at Genesee Community College, 57-43.

Neither team appeared to have an edge early on, with the score being tied after the first quarter. The Fighting Irish started the second quarter with a bang, outscoring the Trojans 18-6 in the frame. The run was keyed by three point field goals made by Shea Norton and Emma Francis, and the Irish ratcheted up their defense.

“After the first we tried to change up defenses,” said Notre Dame Head Coach Dave Pero. “We went back to basics and got us back to where we could get into the lead.

Notre Dame’s defense suffocated Alexander all night, coming away with 13 steals and holding leading scorer Sarah Loranty to six points on 2-of-12 shooting for the game. The Trojans also failed to connect from beyond the arc, missing on all seven attempts.

The Irish offensive attack was balanced all night long, getting 11 points apiece from Melanie Taylor and Shea Norton, while Riley Norton chipped in with 10. Pero’s squad also got seven points each from Francis, Laurie Call and Maddie Mancuso.

“You can’t score if you don’t shoot,” Pero said. “We always tell our players to shoot the ball if you’re open.”

Taylor continued her solid start to the season with another superb all-around game, collecting seven rebounds and six assists to go with her 11 points. Shea Norton added 12 rebounds to go along with her 11 points and Mancuso chipped in with six rebounds off the bench for the Irish (8-1).

Despite being held in-check for most of the night on the offensive end, Loranty did dominate the boards, bringing down 17 rebounds in the loss. Maria Dominick scored a game-high 13 points and grabbed five rebounds for Alexander (7-2), which lost two straight after winning their first seven.

Notre Dame will go on to face Batavia in the finals on Thursday night after the Blue Devils overcame a 30-19 halftime deficit to defeat Perry, 57-48.

The Blue Devils managed to cut the lead to five heading in to the fourth quarter and were able to outlast the Yellowjackets and hand them their first loss of the season.

Batavia got gigantic performances from two freshmen, Madison McCulley, who scored a game-high 15 points and dished out 10 assists while Tiara Filbert chipped in 14 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Blue Devils (8-3), who has defeated Perry in the Rotary Tournament for the second straight season. The Yellowjackets fell 44-41 in the finals a year ago.

Perry (7-1) got 13 points from Ashley Miller and will play Alexander in the consolation game at 6 p.m. on Thursday night at GCC. The finals between Batavia and Notre Dame are scheduled to tip-off at 7:30.

Elba sophomore at Clarkson University was wide receiver for the Golden Knights

By Billie Owens

Jarad Kogut, of Elba, a sophomore majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Clarkson University, participated on the Clarkson University Club Football Team as a wide receiver.

The Golden Knights finished the 2012 season with a 4-3 record. The team was founded two years ago, and has since grown to more than 50 members. The club finished its 2010 season with a 1win-5 loss record, and then improved to 3-3 in 2011.

Elba dominates previously undefeated Alexander in girls basketball

By Howard B. Owens

With a record of 7-0, Alexander's girls were riding the high of a good start to a season.

Then they hit the brick wall of a team that hadn't lost its previous 31 games and are defending state champions, the Lady Lancers of Elba.

Keyed by McKenzie Bezon's 18 points, the Lancers, now 7-0 themselves, notched a decisive 57-31 at home.

Alexander Head Coach Marcia Hirsch wasn't too happy with her team's performance.

"We were playing a tough team," Hirsch said. "I expected my team to step up a little better. Our defense is the not the defense we’ve seen. They shut down all my scorers."

Her girls can expect to drill more on defense in the coming days and weeks, Hirsch said.

Elba's head coach, Tom Nowak, said in preparation for the game, his girls drilled on pressuring Alexander with an aggressive defense, forcing turnovers and limiting scoring, which is what they did Thursday.

And the team will continue to work on defense, he said.

"Hopefully, we can polish things up a bit," Nowak said. "You just keep playing. You never know where it's going to take you."

To go with her 18 points, McKenzie had six rebounds.

Kelsey Bezon had five rebounds and 11 points. Jamie Marshall had 12 points and 10 rebounds. Anna Dorman had seven points and five rebounds.

For Alexander, Sarah Loranty led the way with 13 points.

Next up, Elba hosts Bergen on Monday and Alexander plays in the Rotary Tournament at Genesee Community College on Tuesday.

Notre Dame, Elba are victorious in Lions Club Holiday Shootout

By Nick Sabato

Notre Dame handed Perry its first loss of the season in the Lions Club Holiday Shootout at Genesee Community College, 46-29.

While neither team seemed to find their shooting touch throughout the game, Notre Dame was able to throttle the Yellowjackets’ offensive attack, limiting them to 25 percent from the floor for the game, including 1-for-17 from 3-point range.

Despite playing without the school’s all-time leading scorer, Anthony Ricotta (who was out due to a sprained ankle), Perry kept the game within reach at halftime, trailing only 23-16. The Fighting Irish, who average nine three-pointers per game, were limited to three in the first half and only five for the game. Tommy Prospero and Jared Thornton combined to go 3-for-12 from long range after combining for 34 triples entering the contest.

“We really weren’t patient early in the game,” said Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Rapone. “They came out in a little bit of a different defense and we just didn’t exhibit the kind of patience to be successful against a defense like that.”

The Perry defense focused in on Notre Dame’s three-headed monster of Prospero, Thornton and Tim McCulley, holding them to a combined 23 points, but that meant their role players would get open looks and they made the most of them. Senior Ryan Bender posted his first career double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds while senior Vin Misiti tied Bender for a team-high 10 points.

“They did what they have to do when a team plays a defense like that,” said Rapone. “If they leave you open, you have to stick the open shot.”

The Irish clamped down their defense in the second half, limiting Perry to only five made field goals in the second half, and holding them without a three-point field goal. Notre Dame came up with 10 steals in the game, including three consecutive possessions that ended in McCulley or Prospero deflections and steals in the third quarter.

McCulley finished the game with 10 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Prospero had a solid all-around game with five points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals for Notre Dame (6-0).

Tyler Elliott led the way for Perry (7-1) with 10 points and 15 rebounds.

In the first game of the night, Elba defeated Mount Morris, 63-47.

Senior Kyle Morse led the way for the Lancers with 22 points, 13 rebounds and four steals en route to victory.

Elba stifled the Mount Morris offense all night, holding them to 28-percent shooting for the night, including 3-for-30 from beyond the arc. The Lancers, meanwhile, dominated the glass, edging the Blue Devils, 36-28.

Junior Brandon Naylor scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half, while adding six rebounds and two blocks. Jesse Pflaumer chipped in with 11 points and five assists for Elba (4-4).

Mike Olverd scored a team-high 21 points for Mount Morris, while Dev Milford chipped in eight points, eight assists, eight steals and six rebounds in the loss.

Notre Dame Rips Elba

By Nick Sabato

Elba lost three games last season, all to Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish extended that streak with a 73-30 victory on Tuesday night.

The Lancers jumped out to an early 12-3 lead, and Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Rapone had seen enough. Coming out of the timeout, the Irish would end the first quarter on a 19-0 run and never looked back.

“I told them we had to pick it up defensively,” said Rapone. “Then we hit a few shots, the momentum swung and we started to take away the inside passing lanes. That was the difference.”

Notre Dame’s run was sparked by the three-point shot, connecting on six in the first quarter, four of them coming from Tommy Prospero. The senior would finish with a game-high 21 points on 7 three-pointers. As a team, the Irish torched Elba’s 2-3 zone, connecting on 10 field goals behind the arc.

“When teams play a zone against us, we are going to take threes,” said Rapone. “We have three really great perimeter shooters, and we don’t have a strong inside presence so if we go up against a zone we are going to take threes.”

Tim McCulley had a superb all-around game, scoring 14 points on 7-for-12 shooting while grabbing 5 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks and a thunderous right-handed dunk to cap the night. Prospero also added 5 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals to go with his 21 points. Senior Jared Thornton also added 12 points for Notre Dame (2-0).

Turnovers were the Achilles heel for the Lancers, coughing up the ball 29 times throughout the game, while also going 0-for-8 on three-point shots and only shooting 30-percent from the field overall.

Nate Jonathan did have a stellar contest, scoring a team-high 9 points and grabbing a game-high 8 rebounds for Elba (0-2).

Tied at 88 a piece with under a minute to go after a Donte Meredith three-pointer, the Knights grabbed a one-point advantage at the free-throw line, taking an 89-88 lead. The Cougars were able to tie the game at 89 on a Meredith free-throw, and with under one-second to play, Stanley Peacock gave Genesee a 90-89 lead after making one of two free-throws. A last second heave for CCRI went begging, and GCC escaped with the win.

GCC hung around and got to within one at 68-67 after a layup and free throw from E.J. Blackwell with five minutes left. The Cougars then took their first lead since the early part of the first half after Boler converted two free throws to put Genesee on top 71-70. Blackwell extended the lead to three with a jumper seconds later, but ASA answered with a three pointer to tie the game at 73.

Notre Dame edges Blue Devils in match-up of cross-town rivals

By Nick Sabato

Notre Dame edged out Batavia/Alexander in one of the most exciting cross-town rivalries in Section V.

After losing their first two games of the season, the Fighting Irish notched their first win of the season, 3-2 at Falleti Ice Arena in Batavia on Saturday.

“When we play against Batavia it’s such an emotional game,” said Notre Dame Head Coach Marc Staley. “I just try to keep them low key, as if it is just another game.”

It didn’t take the Irish very long to get on the board, as Kevin Moscicki jammed a loose puck by Batavia goaltender Trevor Rarick just 1:27 into the game. The Ice Devils responded quickly though, as Matt Tambe scored four minutes later to tie the game at one.

Batavia/Alexander would start the second period as the more aggressive team, peppering ND goalie Jimmy Johnson early on before Tambe tipped a Brannon Jones' shot by him to take a 2-1 lead.

Thirty seconds after Tambe’s second tally, Batavia would take a penalty, giving the Irish a power play. However, Notre Dame’s Mason Versage would be called for tripping halfway through, seemingly sending momentum back to the Ice Devils.

But once again Batavia would be called for another penalty, giving the Irish a 4-on-3 man advantage.

Notre Dame finally capitalized on the ensuing faceoff, as Zach Blew blasted a shot through Rarick’s legs from the top of the circle to bring the game back to even heading into the final frame.

The shot advantage in the game was dominated by Notre Dame heading into the third, as they outshot Batavia 23 to 16, however, Batavia would dominate play for the early part of the period.

The Irish would not muster a shot until there was 5 minutes remaining in the game, and only recorded three for the period. However, third one was the difference in the contest.

Versage intercepted an errant Batavia break-out pass with 2:35 remaining, and walked in on goal all alone before flipping it over Rarick’s shoulder for the game-winning goal.

“We had a few missing players,” Staley said of his conservative third-period strategy. “So we went to the trap in the third to conserve energy.”

The game would not end without drama, as Notre Dame would take a penalty with 1:30 left in the contest, but their stingy defense failed to even allow a shot on Batavia’s last power play attempt.

Johnson gave Notre Dame (1-2) a huge boost in goal, making 20 saves. Jeffrey Antolos also assisted on all three of the Fighting Irish’s goals on the day.

“This is a nice win for us,” Staley said. “It will certainly make practice easier on Monday, but we have to continue to work and take it one game at a time.”

One of the main things that plagued the Ice Devils was their inability to capitalize on mistakes, as they went 0-for-5 on the power play for the game.

Rarick made 23 saves for Batavia/Alexander, which falls to 1-2.
