Francis' hat-trick propels Cougars

For the third time this season, forward Dominic Francis recorded a hat-trick for the second-ranked Genesee Community College men's soccer team. Sunday, it came against Tompkins-Cortland Community College in a game that the Cougars would end up winning by a final score of 4-1.

Francis put GCC on the board just three minutes into the first half with his first of three goals on the afternoon. He then gave GCC a 2-0 lead at the 27 minute mark with an unassisted, breakaway goal. Matheus Freire upped the lead to 3-0 with an unassisted goal of his own. The Panthers cut the Genesee lead down to two with their only goal of the contest at the 38 minute mark in the first half. Genesee led 3-1 at the break.

In the second half, both teams played nearly 45 minutes of scoreless soccer before Francis capped off the scoring on the afternoon with a chip shot that beat the TC3 goalkeeper with 31 seconds remaining in the game.

The win improves Genesee's overall record to 11-1. The Cougars will return to action on Tuesday night when they host Corning Community College.

 

 

The Genesee Community College women's soccer team could not find a way past visiting Tompkins-Cortland Community College on Sunday afternoon, falling to the Lady Panthers 5-0.

Both teams played an even, scoreless, thirty-minutes to open the game before Erika Faberzak scored the lone goal of the first half, her first of three goals on the afternoon, to give TC3 a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Panthers struck again early in the second half and added three late goals to cruise to the 5-0 win.

Genesee managed just two shots on goal. Nicole Patterson made twelve saves in net for Genesee.

The Lady Cougars (3-9-1) will return to action again on Tuesday night when they host Corning Community College.

Genesee baseball wins fall title

The Genesee Community College baseball team captured the Western New York Athletic Conference Fall Baseball Championships Title with a 19-1 victory over Erie Community College on Saturday night.

It took the Cougars 13 innings in the semi-finals against Niagara County Community College to earn a victory to reach the finals for the second straight fall season.

Genesee gave up four runs in the top of the first inning to the Thunderwolves to dig themselves a 4-0 hole. The Cougars clawed back and scored twice in the fourth inning, once in the eight inning and then tied the game on an RBI double by Brandon Collins in the bottom of the ninght inning to take the game into extra innings. In the bottom of the 13th inning, still tied 4-4, Carlos Garcia scored the game winning run after Sean Sutton flied out to center field. Garcia tagged from second base to third base, and scored on a wild throw to send the Cougars to the WNYAC Championship game.

In the championship game, GCC jumped out early and never looked back. The Cougars scored three runs in the home-half of the first inning, a run in the third, two runs in the fourth, six runs in the fifth, four runs in the sixth and three runs in the eighth.

Sean Stanley threw six-plus innings for Genesee, allowing just one run on three hits while srtriking out three, en-route to earning the victory on the mound.

Collins went 2-5 in the championship game with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Sutton was 2-4 with two runs scored and two runs batted in and Zach Ranta went 2-3 with three runs scored and one run batted in.

The Cougars finish a perfect 14-0 in WNYAC play during the fall season. They captured the WNYAC Fall Baseball Title for the second straight fall season.

Lancers take control of GR with 56-0 win over Oakfield-Alabama

A win by Elba/Byron-Bergen and a loss by Attica on Saturday puts the Lancers atop the Genesee Region Conference.

The Lancers beat Oakfield-Alabama 56-0 behind another big game fro Zack DuBois, who gained 331 yards on 25 carries, scoring touchdowns of 14, 3, 86 and 63 yards.  DuBois now has 1,198 yards rushing.

Zac Gillard was 4-6 for 67 yards and two TD passes. He had two carries for 36 yards.

Kyle Morse caught of Gillard's TD passes and gained 51 total yards.

Andy Underhill had 10 carries for 84 yards and one touchdown.

For the Hornets, QB Chase Manzella was 6-16 for 20 yards and five carries for 24 yards. Paul Ferraro had three receptions for 13 yards

On defense, Underhill had 17 tackles, including four tackles for a loss. Brandon Naylor, 13 tackles and 1.5 sacks. Nate Jonathan, eight tackles, five for a loss, one sack and one interception. Jon Levchuck had five tackles, two for a loss and half a sack. Chad Kowalik, two tackles and one interception.

On defense for O-A, Manzella, six tackles, Chris Nann, five tackles, Dominic D'Alba, one Interception and Danny Monachino had five tackles.

With the win, Elba/BB moves to 5-0 and is the last undefeated team in the GR.  Attica, who started the day 4-0 lost to Livonia 6-0.

In the only other local game on Saturday, Alexander lost to Holley, 44-12.

Batavia tries to come up big against Hornell, but Raiders still notch 44th straight win

When Batavia scheduled Hornell for its homecoming game some people thought it was crazy, Head Coach Brennan Briggs admitted after last night's 30-14 loss to the Raiders.

Hornell came into the game with a 43-game winning streak and is arguably the best team in the state of New York in any class.

But at the half, with the score tied 14-14, and the Blue Devils' defense coming up big on some key plays, it didn't look so crazy.

The theme for the team all week in preparing for the game, Briggs said, was "great moments come from great opportunities."

The second half didn't go as well for Batavia, but Briggs came out of the game believing the Blue Devils, in his first season as head coach, are ready to play with anybody.

"These kids showed they can come out and play with the best and compete with them," Briggs said. "Yes, obviously, we got beat by 16. We’re not super excited about getting beat by 16, but we know we can play with them. We really do."

Justin Washington and Brett Scheuerlein had big games for the Blue Devils.

Washington snagged an interception in the first quarter and returned it 30 yards for a TD. He also nabbed a 20-yard reception from Scheuerlein in the second quarter for a touchdown (top photo).

Scheuerlein was 7 for 12 passing for 93 yards.

The Raiders played a tight, disciplined defense all night however and the Blue Devils were forced to punt four times in the second half.

In the third quarter, Brendan Buisch hit Richie Harkenrider on a 40-yard TD play. A Batavia defender got a hand on the ball as Buisch hauled it in, but when he couldn't strip it, there was nobody between Harkenrider and the end zone.

With the lead, the Raiders turned their offense over to Zach Bacon, their big, strong full back, who wasn't unstoppable (defenders a couple of times took him down for losses), but could also shake off tackles (or jump over) and get big gains.

In the fourth quarter, Bacon (#40 in photos)  scored on a 50-yard run, just plowing through blue jersies for the first 20 yards like a combine in a cornfield.

"The kid’s a stud," Briggs said. "You can’t really coach against that. You do what you can against him, but he’s one heck of a football player."

In preparing the Blue Devils for Hornell, Briggs reminded them that 31 years ago, Batavia (Correction: It was Notre Dame) snapped Cal-Mum's 49-game winning streak on Woodward Field.

"I told them, 'this field's made for breaking winning streaks,' " Briggs said.

While the final score was disappointing, Briggs said the game will give Batavia great confidence going into the final two games of the season and into, hopefully, sectionals.

"We know that if we continue with the same intensity, the same enthusiasm, the same execution, we can have a great ending to our season," Briggs said.

In other football action on Friday:

  • Le Roy's winning streak was snapped by Perry, 44-36. Perry's QB Cory Dillon hit Jake Kiehle on a fourth-down, less than two minutes to play, 11-yard TD pass to put Perry in the lead. Dillon passed for 299 yards and 4 TDs. He was 25 of 40 passing. Perry, now 4-1, last beat Le Roy in 1991. Peter Privitera carried the ball 18 times for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Le Roy is now 4-1.
  • Notre Dame is 4-1 after beating Pembroke 35-7. Andrew Mullen carried the ball 14 times for 180 yards and one TD. Jason Hart also scored on the ground and had 13 attempts for 14 yards. (Nick Taylor apparently did not play Friday). Tim McCulley was 4-7 passing for 105 yards and three touchdowns. Hart had one TD reception of 12 yards. Josh Johnson's only reception was for a 46-yard TD, and Jared Thornton's lone catch was for a 29-yard score. John Lapple notched Notre Dame's only sack. He had three tackles. Anthony Paladino had 5.5 tackles. Peter Thomas had 10.5 tackles for Pembroke.

This afternoon, Oakfield-Alabama is at Elba/Byron Bergen and Alexander hosts Holley. The other game of significance is Attica at Livonia. Both Elba/BB and Attica are undefeated. The Genesee Region rivals meet next week.

At half-time, Blue Devils and Hornell tied 14 to 14

At half-time, the football game between between the Batavia Blue Devils and Hornell is tied 14 to 14.

Hornell came into the game with 43 straight consecutive wins.

Muckdogs sign affiliation agreement with Miami Marlins

The Batavia Muckdogs and Miami Marlins today announced the signing of a new two-year Player Development Contract through at least the 2014 New York-Penn League season. A joint announcement was made by Marlins Farm Director Brian Chattin and Brian Paris, president of the Genesee County Baseball Club, the non-for-profit that owns the Batavia Muckdogs franchise.

The agreement ends a six-year affiliation with the St. Louis Cardinals, who signed a two-year agreement with the State College Spikes last week. The Marlins had been affiliated with the Jamestown Jammers since 2002. During that time, the Jammers posted a combined record of 370-451 (.451), with two post-season appearances.

“We are excited to have the Miami Marlins as our new affiliate. I look forward to developing a relationship with them and to welcome them into our community. The Marlins are a fine organization that brings with them solid baseball experience and good people. This is a good fit for us as we enter our 74th season of baseball in Batavia. On behalf of the entire community and the Genesee County Baseball Club, we are anxious to get started with another year of professional baseball in Batavia,” Paris said.

“We’re very pleased to sign a new working relationship between Batavia and the Miami Marlins. The Marlins are everything a Minor League franchise could hope for in an affiliation. They also understand how important small town Minor League Baseball is to the Batavia Community and we can’t wait to play host to some extremely talented young players,” said Naomi Silver, president and CEO of Red Wings Management, LLC, the company which has managed the Muckdogs since 2008.

"The Miami Marlins are very excited to begin an affiliation with the Batavia Muckdogs. With its rich baseball history, supportive front office and loyal fan base, Batavia will be the ideal place for our players and staff to call home each summer,” the Marlins' Chattin said. “The Marlins are proud to have Batavia as our player development partner and look forward to a long and productive partnership together."

The Muckdogs are one of seven affiliates in the Marlins’ player development system, joining the New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA/Pacific Coast League), Jacksonville Suns (AA/Southern League), Jupiter Hammerheads (Advanced A/Florida State League), Greensboro Grasshoppers (A/South Atlantic League), Dominican Summer League Marlins (Rookie) and Gulf Coast League Marlins (Rookie).

GCC Soccer: Men win, Women fall

The Genesee Community College men’s soccer team continued their winning ways on Tuesday afternoon as they defeated the visiting Finger Lakes Community College Lakers, 8-0.

The Cougars scored three goals in the first 17 minutes of the match. Sam Cassidy struck first, followed by Nathan Rose and Dominic Francis. The Cougars dominated play in the first half and led the Lakers at the break, 3-0.

Genesee added to their lead in the second half on goals by Theo Stamotopolus, Matheus Freire, and Sean Hallas, before Francis added his second of the contest. An own goal was also tallied in the second half, and GCC cruised to an 8-0 win.

Jake O’Leary and Sean Allen each played a half in net, earning the shutout for Genesee.

The Cougars (8-1) will return to action on Thursday afternoon at 4:00pm as they travel to Mercyhurst Northeast.

 

The Genesee Community College women’s soccer team had a tough night hosting the visiting Lakers from Finger Lakes Community College on Tuesday night, falling by a final score of 7-0.

The Lakers struck early in the first half on goals by Hannah Dalle and Rebecca Giacapuzzi to put the Lakers in front 2-0 just five minutes in. FLCC would continue to stretch their leads as Tasha Hyland and Dalle scored to make the score 4-0 at the break.

FLCC added three second half goals and kept the Lady Cougars to just two shots on net.

Nicole Patterson made 13 saves in goal for Genesee.

The Lady Cougars (2-7-1) return to action on Saturday afternoon at 2:00pm when they host North County Community College.

ND Cross Country Teams Take 3

Both the boy's and girl's cross country teams grabbed three of four at Oatka Park tonight. The teams triumphed over Holley, Cal-Mum and Geneseo, but fell to Way-Co. Jeff Antolos was again untouchable winning by his usual minute over second place with a 16:14. Arron Carlson placed 7th in the race in 18:00 and brother Justin was 10th in 18:41. Ryan Fuller ran to place 20th (20:00), Alec Covel was 23rd (21:03), Dennis Bleier 25th (21:32) and Bryan Mosicki 32nd (23:00). In the girl's race Emily McCracken paced the Irish placing 4th in 20:52, with Laurie Call 5th in 21:10 and Anna Warner 7th with 21:17. Shelby McGinnis placed 12th (22:59), Madison Gluck was 19th (24:43), Rose Flumerfeldt placed 21st (26:25), Hannah Pingrey was 25th (26:45) and Emily Sherman was 28th (27:21).

Saturday was another great day for football in Pembroke.
 
 
 
For the beginners, Alden Gibson found the end-zone for the Newfane Hurricane. Scoring for Pembroke were Gavin Lawless and three touchdowns by Jacob Dulski.
 
 
 
 
In the mini division the Newfane Thunder started with a touchdown by Sam Capen, and the extra point was a two-point conversion toss from Scotty Penwright to Michael Carmer. 
 
The second Newfane TD was run in by Sam Capen.
 
Garett Totten got the Dragons on the board running it in, with the two-point conversion throw from Owen Mileham to Drake Sargent.

Starting the scoring was the Newfane Storm with a run by Sam O'Keefe and extra point by Robert Holmes.
 
Pembroke answered with a TD by Mike Natalzia.
 
Pembroke rolled down the field again with a long acrobatic run by Dakota Dieter, followed by an extra point by Zach VonKramer.
 
Newfane answered with a run and extra point by Robert Holmes.
 
Mike Natalzia took it down the field for the go-ahead run and Jacob Miller connected with Reed Miano for the two-point conversion.
 
Newfane rolled back with a touchdown by Robert Holmes and the two-point conversion pass from Albert Krampe to Josh Volschow.

Lancers, Blue Devils, Oatkan Knights, Hornets all victorious in week four

Elba/Byron-Bergen took a 24-7 lead into the final three minutes of its game Saturday against Notre Dame and barely escaped with a victory.

The Fighting Irish mounted a pair of scoring drives and then recovered an onside kick before the Lancer defense snuffed Notre's hopes of going 4-0 on the season.

Instead it's Elba/BB that is 4-0, tying them for the Genesee Region Conference lead with Attica, which beat Alexander 39-6.

Zach DuBois again dominated on the ground, carrying the ball 35 times for 245 yards and one TD. QB Zac Gillard was 5-8 passing for 108 yards. Gillard tossed a 55-yard TD reception to Kyle Morse and scored on a one-yard run.

Notre Dame's Tim McCulley led the Irish offense with 225 yards in the air, completing 11 passes on 20 attempts. His big strike came with a minute left in the game, hitting Jared Thornton on a 12-yard TD pass.

A minute earlier, Andrew Mullen scored on an 18-yard run. Mullen scored twice on 11 carries for 56 yards.

Nick Taylor also carried the ball 13 times for Notre Dame for 73 yards. Mullen and Taylor also each caught the ball twice for 55 and 43 yards, respectively.

Charlie Hebert caught the ball three times for 38 yards and Thornton had two receptions for 38 yards.

For Elba/BB, Kyle Morse had three catches for 88 yards and Ryan Morse caught the ball twice for for 21 yards.

On defense, for Notre Dame, Josh Johnson had five tackles, Aaron McDonald, 6.5, Taylor, 6.5, Hebert, 5, and Mullen, 4.5. Hebert also had the team's lone sack.

For the Lancers, Brandon Naylor had 15.5 tackles, Nate Jonathan, 8, Andy Underhill, 5.5, and Jon Levchuk, 5. Naylor and Jonathan also each had two sacks and Underhill and Levchuk also both got to the QB once.

In other local football action:

  • The Batavia Blue Devils moved to 3-1 on the season, beating Albion (0-4), 22-12. Brett Scheuerlein scored twice TDs on nine carries and James Soggs had 115 yards on the ground and one TD on 24 carries. Cody Swimline notched seven tackles and an interception and Scheuerlein recorded had 10 tackles.
  • Le Roy continued its seeming domination over the Livingston Conference with a 42-12 victory over Bath. This is the Oatkan Knights first 4-0 start since 2008. Peter Privitera rushed for 158 yards and one TD on 27 carries. Marcus Mistersaro had 46 yards and one TD. Ryan McQuillan had eight tackles and Dylan Johnson, seven.
  • For the second week in a row, Oakfield-Alabama secured a victory with a 30-6 win over Pembroke. Chris Nanni rushed for 101 yards and two TDs on 10 carries. Nanni also returned an interception 76 yards for a touchdown. Allen Chatt also had an interception return of 101 yards for a score. Danny Monachino had 14 tackles.

Next week: Batavia hosts Hornell; Le Roy is in Perry; O-A is at Elba/BB; Attica plays Livonia; Pembroke travels to Notre Dame; and Alexander is at home against Holley.

Elba/Byron-Bergen edges Notre Dame in Genesee Region grid battle

In a battle of unbeaten Genesee Region teams, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish and the Elba-Byron Bergen Lancers squared off Saturday afternoon.

A good part of the opening quarter was a defensive struggle before Elba quarterback Zac Gillard opened the scoring with a one-yard run. The point after attempt failed and the Lancers held a 6-0 lead.

Andrew Mullen returns the ensuing kickoff and later he put Notre Dame on the board with a short run. The point after was good and Notre Dame led 7-6 at  halftime.

On Elba's first series of the second half, Zac Gillard hit Kyle Morse with a 55-yard scoring strike and a missed conversion left the Lancers with a 12-7 lead.

Fullback Jon Levchuk's one-yard run in the fourth quarter extended Elba's lead to 24-7 and with their defense playing soundly, the Lancers seemed to have the game well in hand.

But things were about to take a dramatic turn.

In the later stages of the fourth quarter, the Fighting Irish began to move the ball downfield, capping the drive when Andrew Mullen scored his second tochdown of the day on an 18-yard run. Tim McCulley passed to Jared Thornton for the 2-point conversion and cut Elba's lead to 24-15.

After the kickoff, Elba fumbled the ball away and Notre Dame was back in business. McCulley hooked up with Jared Thornton once again, this time for a touchdown and Notre Dame closed to within 24-21 after a failed conversion.

With about a minute to play, an onside kick was recovered by Notre Dame's Zack Blew at the Elba 45-yard line. But on the first play from scrimmage, Elba's Andy Underhill sacked QB Tim McCulley for a nine-yard loss. Two plays later Brandon Naylor chipped in with another sack and Elba took over on downs and ran out the clock for the win.

Notre Dame Races Well at East Aurora

The Notre Dame Cross Country Girls team ran to a 4th place finish at the East Aurora Invitational on Saturday. Junior Laurie Call led the Irish over the 3 mile course with a 5th place finish of 19:23 and Sophomore Anna Warner grabbed 10th with 19:50. Fellow Sophomore Eily McCracken placed 18th with 20:10, Freshman Shelby McGinnis 45th with 21:32 and Sophomore Rose Flumerfeldt rounded out the top five placing 66th in 23:16. Freshman Emily Sherman placed 78th with 25:19. The boy's team captured 7th place, just 9 points out of 4th. Senior Jeff Antolos ran away with the race with 15:24, a full minute ahead of the second place finisher and the second fastest time of the day. Fellow Senior Arron Carlson placed 10th with 17:04. Sophomore Justin Carlson was 35th in 18:04, Junior Alec Covel was 61st in 18:51 with Juinor Ryan Fuller close behind in 18:59 to place 64th. Freshman Bryan Moscikci and Sophomore Dennis Bleier battled it out at the finish to place 97th and 98th respectively with 21:13. Next up on Tuesday are key match-ups with Way-Co, Geneseo, Holley, and Cal-Mum at Oatka Park.

Irish Girl Harriers run Well

The Notre Dame Girl's Cross Country team raised their record to 4 -1 Tuesday evening at Livonia High School beating Oakfield, Bath-Haverling and Wheatland-Chili while dropping to host Livonia. Emily McCracken, Anna Warner, and Laurie Call finished 3 - 4 - 5 in the race with Shelby McGinnis placing 17th. Madison Gluck was the deciding factor in the score with Oakfield with her 25th place finish. ND now leads Division III.

The boy's had a rough night falling to Wheatland-Chili and Livonia, but were able to get by Oakfield and Bath-Haverling. Jeff Antolos easily won the race by well over a minute. Arron Carlson finished 5th. The boy's are now 3 - 2 on the season and second in Division III.

The teams are in action this Saturday at the East Aurora Invitation at 10:00am

Genesee sweeps Mercyhurst North East

The Genesee Community College baseball team swept a Sunday afternoon double-header against Mercyhurst North East, downing the visiting Saints 4-1 and 7-4.

Sean Stanley (Holley, NY) allowed just one run on four hits while striking out three and walked two in 6.1 innings of work in game one. The Cougars jumped out in front early with a three-run first inning, highlighted by a two-run double from Ramon Vega that scored Brandon Collins and Zach Ranta. Ryan DiMartino (Batavia, NY) capped off the scoring for GCC with an RBI single in the fourth that gave Genesee a 4-1 lead, a lead they would hold on to.

Stanley earned the win while Ivan Madafferi (Albion, NY) pitched the final two outs of the game to earn the save. Vega was 1-2 at the plate with two runs batted in. Collins was 1-2 with an RBI and a run scored.

In game two, GCC got another strong pitching performance, this time from Brandon Stagg. Stagg went six-plus innings and allowed only two runs on two hits and struck out five. Genesee responded to a first inning Saints run by scoring twice in the home-half of the inning to take back the lead. Shakeel Newton led off with an infield single and then came around to score on a Vega single. An RBI single from Fauchedre Celestijn plated Ranta later in the inning and gave GCC a 2-1 lead.

Ranta delivered a two-run double in the third inning and scored a run of his own on a sacrifice fly by Celestijn to give Genesee a 5-1 lead. The Cougars added a run in the fourth and a run in the fifth and allowed three runs (two earned) to the Saints in the seventh inning, but held on for the win.

Ranta finished game two 1-2 with two runs batted in and two runs scored, Newton was 2-3 with two runs scored and Collins was 2-4 with a run batted in and a run scored.

Genesee will return to action on September 22nd when they host Niagara County Community College for a double-header at Dwyer Stadium, beginning at 1pm.

Batavia suffers first loss, GR has three undefeated teams, Le Roy gets third win

The Blue Devils dropped off the list of the undefeated in Genesee County on Friday with a 30-12 loss to Livonia.

Le Roy kept its perfect record in tack with a 35-28 over Avon, while in the Genesee Region Conference, three teams sit atop the standings at 3-0 -- Elba/Byron-Bergen, Notre Dame and Attica.

Elba/BB beat Holley 27-7 with Zack DuBois rushing for 156 yards on 22 carries, scoring once. QB Zack Gillard was 7-14 for 167 yards and two TDs. He also carried the ball five times for 29 yards and a touchdown. Austin Yockel had four receptions for 141, including a 44-yard TD reception. Ryan Morse had a 10-yard TD reception. Andy Underhill made 23 tackles. Brandon Naylor had 14 tackles.

Notre Dame moved to 3-0 with a win over Alexander 36-6. Tim McCulley completed 11 passes on 20 attempts for 187 yards, including TD tosses of 14 and 35 yards to Charlie Hebert and Jared Thornton. Nick Taylor had TD runs of 26 and 89 yards. Andrew Mullen carried the ball 11 times for 65 yards. For Alexander, Dylan Scharlau had 18 carries for 117 yards and QB Nelson Burke was 8 of 17 for 128 yards, including a TD pass to 36-yard TD to Sam Browne. Burke was intercepted twice.

Pembroke dropped to 0-3 with a loss to undefeated Attica 47-0. Four turnovers by the Dragons led to four Attica TDs. Pete Thomas had 12 tackles for Pembroke and Caleb Patterson and Jared Kolmetz each recovered two fumbles.

For Batavia, in the Blue Devils 30-12 loss to Livonia, Nick Canzoneri rushed for 40 yards on eight carries, scoring once. James Soggs had 11 carries for 85 yards.

Le Roy's third win was highlighted by Peter Privitera's 181 yards on 39 carries and two touchdowns. Both Marcus Mistersaro and Dylan Johnson scored on the ground. T.J. Crye was 13-of-27 for 173 yards.

Oakfield-Alabama improved to 1-2 with a win over Finney (1-2), 20-16. Ryan Emery scored twice and carried the ball for 99 yards. Chris Nanni rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries. Danny Monachino and Tommy Geiss each recorded 12 tackles.

GCC Soccer: Men and Women beat Niagara

The Genesee Community College men's soccer team continued their winning ways on Thursday evening as they defeated the visiting Niagara County Community College Thunderwolves, 5-0.

Dominic Francis continued his scoring pace as he notched in a pair of goals to lead the Cougars to the win. Francis would get the first goal of the game at the halfway mark of the opening half. Lee Micklethwaite assisted on the goal. The Cougars would add to the lead as Matheus Freire added his first collegiate goal as a Cougar to lead Genesee into the break with a 2-0 lead.

Genesee added three more goals in the second half behind tallies from Micklethwaite, Theo Stamotopolus and Francis.

The win improves GCC to 5-1 overall and the Cougars will return to action on Saturday at 3:00pm as they travel to Mohawk Valley Community College.

 

The Genesee Community College women's soccer team defeated the visiting Niagara County Community College Thunderwolves by a final score of 3-2 on Thursday afternoon.

Niagara scored the first goal of the contest 14 minutes in when Victoria Gray got a shot past Genesee keeper Nicole Patterson. The Cougars would tie the contest fifteen minutes later when Dana Hansen found the back of the net. Shelby Hatfield earned the assist.

The second half saw Genesee get out to a two goal lead as Kaitlyn Bowers and Rachel Ball scored to make it 3-1. Niagara would score one of their own late in the half as Alison Conner tallied the goal, but it was not enough as GCC held on for the 3-2 victory.

Patterson made nine saves to pick up GCC's second consecutive victory of the season.

The Lady Cougars (2-3-1) will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00pm when they travel to Mohawk Valley Community College.

Pembroke Boys Varsity Soccer Team gets first win

A 2-0 win over Attica gave the Pembroke Boys Varsity Soccer Team its first win since soccer was brought back to the school last year. The Dragons took the early lead on a goal by Austin Franclemont with Tyler Ross on the assist. The team then played a solid game in front of Morgan McGiveron, who was perfect in goal stopping all the shots he faced. The insurance goal was scored by Gabe Birkby, assisted by Collin Lewis.

Genesee sweeps Jefferson

The Genesee Community College men’s soccer team eased passed Jefferson Community College on Tuesday evening, defeating the visiting Cannoneers by a final score 9-0.

The opening half saw the Cougars score twice in the first ten minutes as Declan Brennan and Dominic Francis each beat the Jefferson goalkeeper to put the Cougars out in front. Genesee then continued to put the game on cruise control as Lee Micklethwaite and Nathan Rose scored late in the opening half to send Genesee into halftime with a 4-0 lead.

The Cougars upped the lead to 5-0 just three minutes into the second half as Ryan Dunn found the back of the net. Two minutes later, Francis would score his second of the match on a penalty kick to up the score to 6-0. The Cougars added three more goals in the later stages of the second half on goals by Micklethwaite, his second, Francis' third, and Sean Hallas to make the final score 9-0.

Jake O’Leary made four saves to earn the shutout, the third of the season for GCC.

With the win, Genesee improves to 4-1 on the season. The Cougars return to action on Thursday at 5pm when they host Niagara County Community College

 

 

The Genesee Community College women’s soccer team shut out the visiting Jefferson Community College Cannoners 1-0 on Tuesday evening, earning their first victory of the season.

Denae McGrath scored the first and only goal of the contest for the Cougars in the 16th minute to give Genesee a lead they would hold on to.

Jefferson nearly tied the game twice in the second half, but Nicole Patterson made two big saves to keep the Cannoneers off the board. In the 12th minute, Patterson tipped a shot off of a free kick over the cross bar and followed with a diving save off of a corner kick in the 25th minute.

Patterson made seven saves in net.

The win is the first for the Lady Cougars and the first for head coach Caitlin Long.

Genesee (1-3-1) returns to action on Thursday at 3pm at home when they take on Niagara County Community College.

ND Cross Country Teams Open With Wins

The Notre Dame Cross Country Team opened up with an easy win against Keshequa at Genesee County Park Course 1. Jeff Antolos set a new school course record in the boys race running 16:13 (formerly held by Dan Bobo at 16:25) with Arron Carlson taking second in 17:51. Justin Carlson was third in 18:24, Ryan Fuller 6th (19:29) and Alec Covel 7th (19:44). Dennis Bleier (20:48) and Bryan Moscicki (23:02) rounded out the scoring placing 10th and 11th respectively. The girls team had a little easier time taking the top four spots behind Anna Warner (20:36), Laurie Call (20:38), Emily McCracken (21:01) and Shelby McGinnis (22:24). Madison Gluck finished 6th (24:40), Rose Flumerfeldt 7th (25:48) Hannah Pingrey 9th (25:55) and Emily Sherman 10th (26:30). The Irish will be going again on Saturday at the West Seneca Inviational at Sunshine Park on Saturday. Girls race at 12:00 noon and the boys at 1:00pm.
