New Zealand ex-pat Demeter N made her second start at Batavia Downs a winning one after upsetting in the $14,000 Open I Handicap for pacing fillies and mares on Wednesday night (Dec. 7).
Demeter N (Larry Stalbaum) got away last as Shallow (Ray Fisher Jr.) fought hard off the gate with So Amazing (Kevin Cummings) before claiming the lead at the quarter in :28.1. But as soon as she cleared, Cummings came right back with So Amazing to retake and led the field from there. As the group passed three-eighths, Demeter N was out and rolling with Stalbaum, bouncing in the bike with every stride.
Demeter N drew near So Amazing at three-quarters, but So Amazing responded and held Demeter N at bay around the final turn. When they straightened out for home, Cummings and Stalbaum were both rocking and knocking as the mares paced dead even all the way down the lane. Three pylons from the line, Demeter N got a slight advantage and ended up winning by a one-quarter length in 1:56.3.
Demeter N ($17.40) reached $131,499 in earnings this year on the strength of her seven wins for owner Shark Racing and trainer Larry Stalbaum.
In the secondary featured $10,000 conditioned distaff pace, Faithful Desire (Jim Morrill Jr.) scored her third consecutive victory in a gate-to-wire romp timed in 1:56.1. Faithful Desire returned $2.90 for owner Eva Saintcross and trainer Shawn McDonough.
The Downs leading dash driver Kevin Cummings continued to add to his numbers after he won five more races on Wednesday. He scored with Amora Beach (1:57.3, $2.60), Sudden Change N (1:59, $7.00), Lyons Anita (1:55.4, $5.40), Delightful Summer (1:57, $5.30) and Ellieonthemove (1:58, $7.90). Cummings extended the gap between himself and second-place Jim Morrill Jr. to nine wins (141-132) as Morrill had a hat trick himself this night.
McDonough also had a big outing at the track as he scored a training grand slam on the card. McDonough trainees getting their pictures taken included the aforementioned Faithful Desire, Amora Beach and Delightful Summer, along with Lucky Town (1:57, $6.30). McDonough also added one catch-driving win behind Bacardi (1:59.2, $23.00) to give him five total wins during the night.

Sharon Valyear-Gray wanted to make one thing clear: if you're in need of hockey equipment, Friends of the Rink may be able to help.
The nonprofit has six containers and then some of used goods, from skates and helmets to shoulder pads.
What she also wants to make clear -- similar to the sheen on the ice rink at David M. McCarthy ice arena -- is that these goods are available to kids in need to help them enjoy the sport.
Friends of the Rink has brought back the used equipment and skate collection with the sole purpose to "help make the sport of hockey more accessible to local families," the group states.
After a free trial session, called Try Hockey For Free, Genesee Amateur Hockey Association introduces families to its beginner program of 15 sessions (from October to December) and again from January to March. This program is sponsored by Batavia's Tim Horton franchise. Thanks to access to free used equipment and skates, "we can help out the families from the initial purchase of hockey equipment and skates," Valyear-Gray said.
"There is always the anxiety of spending that money and then the youngster becomes disinterested," she said. "Now, once again, we have a collection of gently used equipment and skates totally free of charge to ease that financial burden."
GAHA families have generously been donating items after their own children grow out of the items, she said, which include hockey pants, shoulder and elbow pads, gloves and skates. Supplies of helmets are limited, as they are date-coded with a five-year lifespan. Items are stored in metal bins at the end of the bleachers in the arena.
"Families are welcome to help themselves to needed items," she said, or for assistance, call her at (585) 344-2248 or email svgray@rochester.rr.com.
To donate helmets with the code and date within five years old or less, or other clean ice hockey equipment, drop it off in a bin between the two entry doors. Donations are always welcome and needed as well, she said.

The management of Batavia Downs announced today that post time for the final card of racing for 2022 scheduled for Saturday (Dec. 17) has been changed from 6 p.m. to 3 p.m. This was done after the week 15 game between the Buffalo Bills and Miami Dolphins was flexed to 8:15 p.m. by the National Football League.
Don Hoover, General Manager of Live Racing and Race Secretary at Batavia Downs, said: “After the NFL announced that the Bills/Dolphins game had been flexed to Saturday night, it was decided to move our post time to 3 p.m. to accommodate the fans of both live harness racing and the Buffalo Bills.”
With that change in place, several other times have changed as well.
Horsemen should be advised that the track will close for training at noon on Dec. 17 to prepare it for the night’s races.
The clubhouse will open its doors at 2:30 p.m. and will offer a prime rib and shrimp buffet that will be served from 3:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The Railbar will be open from 2:30 p.m. until the end of the last race, which will be approximately 7:00 p.m. However it will not remain open for the Bills Game.
The final day of racing will also host the “Night of Distinction” year-end awards, which will be presented by the Upstate New York Chapter of the United States Harness Writers Association and Batavia Downs to honor all the human and equine stars of the 2022 meeting.
Sparked by 26-year-old team captain Hayden Allis of Medina, the BBA North team edged the BBA South team, 62-61, Saturday in the 28th edition of the Karl Marth Cup challenge match at Mancuso Bowling Center in Batavia.
The 26-year-old right-hander, one of seven members of the Allis family on the team, averaged 267 for his four games and won the maximum number of points (10.5) in the event, which features competition in Doubles, Singles, Baker Doubles and Baker Team. In Baker matches, bowlers alternate frames.
Allis’ first three games totaled 815, qualifying him for a United States Bowling Congress-certified honor score, and his overall performance resulted in him being named the Scott Wright Memorial Award winner.
The BBA North team now leads the series, 16-12. The tournament began in 1994 and now held in memory of Karl Marth, a Batavia Bowling Association Hall of Famer, who passed away in 2003. It was not held in 2020 due to COVID-19.
The BBA South, which was led by Scott Shields of Batavia who averaged 246 and won eight points, dominated in Doubles before the North rallied to win both the Baker Doubles and Singles. Shields was selected as the Joe Trigilio Memorial Award recipient for his effort.
The outcome came down to the final frame in the Baker Team event, with Jake Rosenbeck of Medina striking out in the 10th frame to lock up the victory for the North. Rosenbeck averaged 232 for his four games.
Other members of the winning team were Alex Allis, Mike Allis, Roger Allis, Scott Allis, Tom Allis, Mike Lavender (who is married to Amy Allis), Dean Cadieux Jr., Tim Talbot, Scott Gibson and Jason Mahnke.

Kevin Cummings has been Batavia Downs leading dash driver for most of the meet and his piloting prowess was on full display Saturday night (Dec. 3) when he won seven of the 13 races on the program, including both co-featured races.
In the $14,000 Open I trot Cummings sat second with CR Blazin Beauty behind Captain Krupnik (Jim Morrill Jr.) from the start until the top of the stretch as Con Air Hall (Dave McNeight III) applied pressure to the leader for the last half of the mile. Then in the straight, CR Blazin Beauty shook loose and took the lead before holding off a late rush from Lougazi (Ray Fisher Jr.) at the wire to win by one-quarter length in 1:58.1.
It was the 50th career win for CR Blazin Beauty ($8.40) who is owned by Marissa Russo and trained by Dave Russo.
The following race was the $14,000 Open I Handicap pace and Cummings went the distance with Stranger Things.
It took a little effort to get there, but after being parked to the quarter in :27.4, Stranger Things grabbed the lead from Mississippi Rabbit (Jim Morrill Jr.) and settled in for the ride. He hit the half in :57.2 and passed three-quarters in 1:25.4 on top by 2-½ lengths. Then coming into the stretch, Mississippi Rabbit came off the pegs and roared towards the leader. He made up ground but not enough as Stranger Things hung tough and won by a length in 1:55.
Stranger Things ($8.80) collected his 11th win of the year for owners Virginia Schoeffel, Kathy Schoeffel and James Reuther. Angelo Nappo trains the winner.
Cummings completed his lucky seven with wins behind Raylen Givens (1:59.3, $2.90), Cellular (2:01.4, $5.70), Thor De Vie (1:59, $6.20), The Longest Yard (1:54.1, $2.20) and Beachboydesire (1:58.2, $3.70). He also had two seconds and a third from his 13 drives that gave him a sparkling .650 UDR for the night.
Cummings also put some space between himself and Jim Morrill Jr. who sat second behind him in the standings at the start of the night by only two wins. Now Cummings has extended his lead to seven over Morrill (136 to 129) who had two wins of his own on Saturday.
Trainer Jim Rothfuss scored a double to lead all conditioners for the night.
Live racing resumes at Batavia Downs on Wednesday (Dec. 7) at 6 p.m. and there is another carryover available. The Jackpot Hi-5 Pentafecta in the 13th race will start with $6,473 in the pool. Motyka scored on another power play in the third period with assists from Hofmaster and Johnson.
The Panthers scored their lone goal at 7:34 in the third period and Hofmaster capped off the scoring at 12:06 with an assist from Hutchins.
Goalie Thys Tanner blocked 15 of the 16 shots sent his way.
“All in all, not a bad effort from the squad," said Head Coach Marc Staley. "It’s early in the season, so we are trying to gel as a team and get everybody on the same page. Not sure we have found our identity yet. We’ve only had 10 practices together due to the storm, and the Thanksgiving holiday. And only two times did we have all of our players on the ice together. We will learn from this game and get better. We have a rather large test in front of us this weekend with back-to-back games against Starpoint, and Hamburg, two very strong Section VI teams. We’re jumping right into the deep end.”
United plays Starpoint at the Northtowne Center in Buffalo on Friday at 5:30pm. The team faces Hamburg at home at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

The 60-year-old right-hander defeated Scott Shields of Batavia, 279-247, and Bob Santini of Mount Morris, 224-192, in the three-person stepladder final round to claim the $325 top prize. He also earned a free entry into the GRUSBC Scratch Memorial Tournament on Jan. 7-8 at Mancuso Bowling Center in Batavia.
Allis rolled a 683 series in the three-game qualifying round – taking the 11th spot out of the 12 bowlers who advanced – and followed that with 440 in the two-game second round and 225 in the semifinals to make it to the finals. He averaged 231 for his eight games.
Santini, who registered 701 in the qualifying round, 440 in the second round and 268 in the semis, earned $200 for placing second while Shields pocketed $150 for placing third. Shields rolled 690 in qualifying, 406 in the second round and 204 in the semis to advance.
Batavian Mike Pettinella placed fourth – averaging a tournament-high 241 for six games, including 724 in the qualifying round and 520 in the second round. His 203 in the third round fell a pin short of tying Shields and forcing a rolloff for the third and final spot.

The Le Roy Girls Volleyball team was honored at this past week's Le Roy Central School District board meeting for the team's Section V Class C championship.
It's the ninth straight year under Coach Sue Staba that the team has made the finals.
The Knights were 22-2 on the season.
Their second loss came in the Far West Regional Championship against Portville.
"We can't seem to get past Portville," Staba said. "But it was definitely a huge accomplishment making it."
Staba was named the Class C coach of the year for Girls Volleyball, but she gave all the credit to her team.
"The bond that they have, the friendship they have, was -- I've coached 16 years, and it's definitely one of the best, if not the best, team that I had the privilege of coaching with their maturity, their friendship, the things they did with each other off the court," Staba said. "I mean, they're all together all the time, which I think made them play so much better on the court."
The school's outstanding Cross Country runners also received certificates of recognition, including Aiden Soggs (pictured below).
Soggs finished in the Top 10 at sectionals for the third straight year. He's won four Cross Country patches, three individual and one team patch. He finished first in five regular season meets.
Also recognized was Charlotte Blake, who couldn't attend the meeting. She finished third in sectionals. It is her fourth consecutive Top 3 finish and the first girl in school history to win four Cross Country patches, and the second runner overall to achieve that feat. She's the second girl in school history to win a Genesee Region championship.

Press release:
A pair of $14,000 Open I Handicap races were up for grabs on Saturday night (Nov. 26) at Batavia Downs and Jim Morrill Jr. was more than happy to take the top prize in each after he airmailed both of his mounts to impressive victories.
In the trotting feature, Morrill launched Credit List from post eight and battled on the outside with Jumpinthejailhouse (Kevin Cummings) to the quarter in :28.3 before crossing over to the pylons at the three-eighths pole. Morrill then slowed the tempo to three-quarters forcing Captain Krupnik (Drew Monti) to come first over from third and get to within a length of the leader heading into the last turn. Credit List and Captain Krupnik broke away from the field and faced off heading for home. Captain Krupnik closed with every stride but couldn’t get to Credit List, who hung on to win by three-quarters of a length in 1:58.4.
It was the third straight win for Credit List ($8.00) and eighth of the year, pushing his earnings to $80,471 in 2022 for Room4040 LLC Stable and trainer Kevin Reynolds Jr.
Then in the next race, Morrill shooed home Prairie Panther in the top pacing event after being parked out every step of the mile. Prairie Panther made his way to second on the outside of Brave World (Denny Bucceri) at the :28 quarter but Brave World would not let Prairie Panther take the front. The two 8-year-old geldings then went toe-to-toe to the half in :57 and three-quarters in 1:25.3 before heading into the last turn, still in the heat of battle.
Stranger Things (Kevin Cummings) was now on Prairie Panther’s back and he was poised to pounce in the lane. When they hit the top of the stretch, Prairie Panther put away Brave World but Stranger Things was now outside of him and coming hard. But somehow, some way, Prairie Panther dug deep and had something left in the tank to hold off Stranger Things at the line to win by a neck in 1:55.3.
It was the 15th win of the year and 62nd of his career for Prairie Panther ($2.50) who is owned by his trainer Michael Deters, in partnership with Joel Warner.
Morrill ended the night with three wins.
Driver Drew Monti had a huge night at Batavia on Saturday, winning five races during the card including scoring a natural hat trick in races 11, 12 and 13. He won with Make Some Waves (1:56, $7.40), A Game Changer (1:56.2, $22.40), Johnny Chip (1:56.2, $23.80), Ey Cowboy (1:57.1, $5.00) and Windemere Ryan (1:57.4, $4.10). He also had two seconds and two thirds that when combined, gave him a .521 UDR for the evening. Three of Monti’s five wins (Make Some Waves, Ey Cowboy and Windemere Ryan) were trained by Joe Skowyra.
Two other horsemen who teamed up for a natural hat trick were driver Kevin Cummings and trainer Sammy Smith who combined to win the third, fourth and fifth races with Speed It (1:59, $6.10), Gemini Eddie (2:00.1, $19.40) and The Longest Yard (1:54.3, $2.40).
Live racing resumes at Batavia Downs on Wednesday (Nov. 30) at 6 p.m. and there is another carryover available. The Jackpot Hi-5 Pentafecta in the 13th race will start with $5,262 in the pool. A great football season for the Oakfield-Alabama/Elba team came to an end on Monday when the Aggies lost to Randolph in the Far West Regional Championship for Class D, 42-26.
Noah Currier, Connor Scott, Bodie Hyde all scored touchdowns and Kyle Porter had a 26-yard fumble recovery for a TD, but it wasn't enough to overcome a big game for Randolph's Xander Hind, who gained 276 yards on 48 carries. He scored five touchdowns.
Currier had 16 carries for 166 yards.
Brayden Smith led the defense with 17 tackles. Hyde had 12 Tackles, and Aiden Warner had 13 tackles.
"Hats off to Randolph," said Aggies' Head Coach Tyler Winter. "They were a physical football team that played a style we struggled with tonight. They stayed ahead of the chains, and we couldn't get anything rolling on either side of the ball. I wish them the best of luck the rest of the way. My heart hurts for these seniors that have given so much to this program. But they're walking out the door with no regrets and a heck of a football resume. I couldn't be more proud of them. For the underclassmen, the quest for the three-peat is coming soon."

Alexander got one more shot at extending its football season this weekend in a state tournament quarterfinal game against Cambridge-Salem in Broadalbin and, in the cold, wind, and snow, found it tough sledding.
The game was close, but close isn't a win. The Trojans fell short in a 12-7 loss.
Cambridge-Salem is now 12-0 on the season, and Alexander finishes at 9-2.
Their only other loss came in the Class D sectional championship against Oakfield-Alabama/Elba last week.
Normally, a sectional championship loss would end a team's season but with only 11 sections in New York high school athletics, one section each year, on a rotating basis, is able to advance a second-place team to a quarterfinal game. This year, that section is Section V.

Weather delayed this weekend's Far West Regionals in football.
